Owner description: The Great Synagogue of Stockholm is simple yet beautiful. It provides good information on the history of the Jewish community in Sweden and Scandinavia, offering a sobering exhibit on World War II.

A surprisingly large place but firmly locked except for tours. They are 1:00 pm Monday through Thursday and 11:00 am Friday. $20 a tour - but worth the effort to get there. The interior is striking and there is a good description of the history of Jews in Sweden. Definitely a recommend.

Enter the courtyard and encounter a large hanukiah. Then -- if you make advance arrangments -- visit the beautiful interior.

Check the opening times before you come! They only offer guided tours for tourists during the summer, and only on weekdays. You may be able to attend a religious service but then you are not allowed to take photos. I think they should offer some tours on weekends too.
The guide was nice and explained a lot about their history in Sweden. The building is beautiful, as you can expect.
Note that they only accept cash (and it's probably the only place in Stockholm where you don't get a receipt).
I recommend a visit if you like synagogues.

We try to visit synagogues around the world and did so a few weeks ago in Stockholm. Though we never did find the Rauol Wallenberg tribute that was somewhere near the synagogue, we did take the one hour tour.

The docent was excellent, with thorough knowledge of the history of the Jewish populaton in Sweden, starting in the mid-1750s, through the creation of this synagogue in the mid 1800s, to the current status of the community.

VERY DISTURBING to hear about how such a "liberal" country has treated the Jewish population, now I think about 10,000, in recent years. Find out about gettting kosher food in this country or having a brit milah!!!

Although we are atheists, we do not forget our Jewish origin. Therefore we decided to go visit the Great Synagogue of Stockholm.

At first we thought it would be a very nice idea visiting the place on a Saturday morning, when the hall is in full operation. As we came across the synagogue (a stone's throne of Kungsträdgården), the guard asked us for our passports. He wasn't a police officer and didn't wear any uniforms, but we decided to cooperate (not without asking for the authorization of which he could ask for passerby's passport).

After the passport check, we've been told that the guided tour is on Mondays at 11:00. We walked away and came exactly at this time and found the place is locked. Not a very welcoming experience.
