“Nice boutique hotel outside of the hustle and bustle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 August 2013

Beautiful hotel located slightly outside of the City Center on a quiet square (about 20 minutes walk to the Center or one can use a bike for free with one of the ubiquitous city bike racks located right outside the hotel). Lobby includes a nice bar which became quite the scene.

Room was modern although showing some age. Staff was very nice and friendly. While this is technically a boutique hotel, it is quite large. Breakfast was great and included in the room price.

Rival is located in Mariatorget, a very trendy and cool area of Sodermalm. I'd say this is a more "posh" area of Sodermalm, unlike SoFo (think lower east side in NYC). The hotel looks like a movie theater from the outside. The interior of the lobby and bar is very retro, and the Rival cafe outside seemed to be always popping. The service was excellent. The staff is very friendly and hip. They were able to hold our luggage while we explored the city as we got there before the regular check-in time. They also accommodated our request for a single bed instead of two bunk beds which we appreciated.

As this is a boutique hotel, it is quite pricey so I was glad to see that we were not given a tiny room. It was actually quite spacious and it had big floor to ceiling windows on one side, which added to the aesthetic of the room. The design is cool, and of course, there were ABBA CDs. There is a music button in the washroom, where you can listen to whatever station your TV is on for some extra privacy. The use of space was brilliant when it came to the ironing board, which was installed in the closet and could easily be slid in an out without taking it out. The blow dryer's power was industrial strength so I was very VERY happy about that.

There is no kettle in the room, but on the fourth floor, there is a coffee station as well as a mini business section. I liked that they had cups so that I could take the coffees to my room every morning. I actually thought they could have done a better job with the line of shampoos/soap line they have (Crabtree and Evelyn). It would have been cool to see a Swedish line like Byredo.

Note: The concierge of Rival, Sean has his own blog about Stockholm etc. and it is indeed very useful. Check it out here: http://stockholmtourist.blogspot.ca/

We stayed here for 5 nights. As suggested by other reviews, we upgraded to a superior room. Room was not large, but nicely appointed. Bathrooms had full shower doors, heated floors and rainfall shower.

Helpful staff, charming neighborhood, pretty good location, fun/trendy atmosphere.

Breakfast was included in our room rate and was excellent, far better than what most hotels provide. We also had dinner there the night we arrived, and everything was very good.

This place is #1 for Stockholm hotels on Tripadvisor, and I think it deserves its rank. There are more luxurious hotels if that is what you are after, but we really liked this one and thought it provided great value.

It is about a 15 minute walk to most of the major sites

My wife and I stayed at the Rival for three nights in mid July. An easily overlooked feature of the hotel is its accessibility from the airport. No need for cabs, even with luggage. One train from the airport to central station, then the metro red line to Mariatorget. When exiting the metro you can see the park, and after a few steps the hotel itself. It's immediately clear you're not in touristland, but rather in a real neighborhood of Stockholm, the very area that Steig Larsen inhabited. The hotel itself is, to my eye, less than welcoming upon entry because of the odd layout of the lobby---is that a bar in the sunken area to the left? and where the heck do those stairs go; and what's with the red velvet everywhere? The registration area, too, is nothing to write home about, so for someone who is accustomed to 5-star luxury properties, I was re-thinking my decision to book here. (My wife did not share my apprehensiveness.) Until we were greeted by the staff---friendly, relaxed, welcoming, helpful and all-around delightful. And not enough can be said about Sean Naughton, the concierge who surely ranks among Stockholm's if not Europe's best. The staff prepared us for the equally fine rooms. Not luxurious, but very clean, well-designed and supplied. The bathroom is 5-star, as are the closets and the bed; the balcony overlooking the park was a nice touch. Speaking of 5-star, the breakfast buffet comes close, with an abundance of tasty choices to satisfy any palette and any nutritional requirements. As for touring, the hotel is within walking distance of the key sights, and an easy metro ride to others. Would I stay here again? You bet. So why a 5-star rating overall? The public areas could use some work, and the restaurant is not top flight.

Room Tip: A balcony room across from the park is an obvious choice.

In the Summer book a room at the front with a balcony - well worth the extra cost. The RIval is well placed for all the sights that Stockholm has to offer and is a stones throw from the nearest metro station. Beds are super comfortable and the staff uniformly friendly and helpful. Breakfast was unremarkable but plentiful. Free tea and coffee is a welcome bonus.

Returned here last month for the first part of a short break in Sweden and once again we were very pleased with all aspects of the hotel. Excellent room overlooking Mariatorget, supremely comfy beds, excellent bathroom with tub as well as shower and a room thermostat that actually kept the A/C at the temperature you set. Breakfast in the Rival Bistro each morning was delicious with, I think, one of the most extensive selections of food I have seen anywhere we have stayed throughout the world and all in a charming setting. We also ate in the Bistro one evening and found it to be of a very high standard and reasonably priced. All of the staff were most friendly and efficient and the decor throughout the hotel is wonderful. We were in Stockholm to see the Benny Andersson Orchestra in concert at the Galejan inside Skansen which was also magical, so on two counts, thank you Mr Andersson!

We enjoyed our stay at hotel Rival in Stockholm. The location is excellent, the whole hotel is very nicely decorated. Breakfast is plentiful and very good, with a huge buffet and an additional (free) on-demand menu (pancakes, french toasts, etc.). The staff is also very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
