“Cool hotel!”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

Although its owned by Benny Anderson-not a shred of Abba could be found! A fun hotel with wonderful staff. The rooms are large by Swedish standards and the cool Sodermalm area made this hotel perfectly placed.Small gripe that there were no air con controls in the room, but luckily opening windows allowed for the cool breeze with no outside noise in this peaceful neighborhood.Definitely will return!

We spent almost a week at the Rival and loved every moment of it and the beautiful square it sits upon.
The restoration of the building has been wonderfully completed and we had a quiet room at the back of the hotel, overlooking gardens. It was well appointed and extremely comfortable, with a full range of TV and audio equipment, heated floor in the sumptuous bathroom, and ample wardrobes complete with ironing board, fluffy bathrobes, slippers - even an umbrella in case it rained (which it didn't I'm glad to say).
The bar snacks, served on the terrace overlooking the square, were tasty and well prepared, just the thing to accompany a beer or glass of wine after a day of tourism. The restaurant itself was top notch too, not just for the huge range of breakfast options, but for the a la carte evening menu. And, next door, is the Rival Cafe which was great for a light snack and a drink.
All in all, a wonderful experience and the staff couldn't have done more to make our stay as comfortable and enjoyable as it was - we shall be back !

We were really impressed with this boutique hotel. Front desk staff were efficient and friendly. Our room was spacious and comfortable and it was a joy to relax on the balcony. The breakfast was superb, with excellent choices and even made-to-order items. Good location in the Sodermalm neighborhood, not far from the city center. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Perfect hotel, exceptionally clean, bright, large, airy rooms. Bathroom was superb with luxurious fluffy towels and robes, underfloor heating, huge shower, Le Source toiletries and tv/music plays from a speaker in the bathroom as if you were in the bedroom.

Excellent breakfast in attractive restaurant. Dinner was quite exquisite too.

Too much attention to detail to list here and would probably just be repeating other posts.

Some modern so called "5 star" hotels in other areas of Scandinavia and charge much more, should visit Rival because you don't even come close!

I stayed here two nights with my family in July 2014 while exploring Stockholm. The hotel is beautifully appointed and has a nice and quiet location next to a park. The old city is a quick walk across the water, making the hotel convenient despite being out site the city center.

From the fluffy "Björn" teddy bear sitting patiently in our room, to the ultra trained staff on reception, concierge & restaurant, there is absolutely nothing but praise I can heap on this hotel.

OK, I am biased as I am a huge ABBA fan, the hotel's owner is the one and only Benny Andersson who with other forward thinking investors, totally reworked the building back in 2003. What stands on Mariatorket (a pretty & lively, social meeting point/town square) is an hotel that many of the large chains should aspire to.

When I say there was nothing to quibble about, I mean it, everything a traveller visiting Stockholm needs, is provided.

Being an ABBA fan, I really wanted to stay in an ABBA themed room & so it was to be, the beginning of a trip of a lifetime got off to a great start in a Superior room with a fantastic picture of my supergroup ABBA overlooking the comfortable double bed, fluffy slippers, bathrobes, underfloor heated bathroom, complimentary sweets, USB ports, HDMI ports, a 3D BluRay player, free DVDs to play in it, free CDs to play, an LED HD TV, the list of Über specs goes on.

The restaurant, so well run by a most wonderful headwaiter, he should be proud of all his staff, attentive, efficient but most of all, BIG smiles all around, for the smokers, a terrace one can eat a snack out on, overlooking the "Bochi-Ball" players in Mariatorget Square, what an utterly pleasant experience. Indoors you can dine "A La Carte", with delicious food, reasonably priced & presented to make you feel like a King.

Street level is a Cafe, open until 21:00 serving snacks, burgers, & fine beers & wines, sit, watch the world go by, people watch, share your days sightseeing stories with fellow travellers.

At the Concierge, nothing is too much trouble, need an Umbrella? You got it, need help with maps?, you got it. Need a little something special attending to? I got it & await to be yet again remembering such unforgettable memories.

Return to Stockholm, of course soon, return to The Hotel Rival, well that one does not even have to ask, a resounding yes.

Well done Hotel Rival, the staff are wonderful, & not to sound too corny, Benny Andersson, "Thank You For The Hotel"
