In few words, an excellent Hotel with the highest quality standards.
In June 2009 we decided to make a long weekend in Stockholm and chose the Rival Hotel.
The decission couldn't be better. The Hotel is extremelly cool and fancy, the service excellent and the location very convenient to visit the city by walk and to enjoy the nightlife in Södermalm. In fact, the Rival's lobby bar is one of the best places in the city to have a drink in a modern and sofisticated atmosphere.
We chose a Deluxe room, quite big with signature forniture and with a nice view to Mariatorget park.
Breakfast is also very good.
I'd strongly recommend this hotel to anybody planning to vist the wonderful Stockholm.

We stayed in a deluxe room with an extra bed for our 20 year old daughter. Fantastic Egyptian sheets and goose down pillows, wonderful service from the staff who are warm and friendly. Outside it was minus 21 degrees C, inside it was warm and comfy. Delicious breakfast buffet with loads of choice is included in the price. The bar made great cocktails albeit rather pricey (but this was Sweden so we were expecting that). The Rival is owned by Benny Anderson from Abba, so we had Abba cds in the room to listen to, as well as other choices. They have a well-chosen list of free films to request - we watched the Shining! The only thing we were sad about was that there was nothing on at the famous Rival theatre while we were there, maybe next time.

I stayed at the Rival with my partner and friends for 4 days before, over and after New Year's Eve. We all absolutely loved the hotel - the rooms are spacious and beautifully designed with really comfortable beds. The bathrooms are clean and spacious also. There are lots of modern design touches whilst it is clear that the hotel belonged previously to another age.
We loved the bars - very cool, and the barmen were extremely friendly and mixed us some fabulous cocktails.
I have stayed at other hotels in Stockholm on business and this was the first time I have been for leisure, but I would definitely stay at the Rival again.

We really loved the art deco meets contemporary style of this wonderful hotel, unlike any other we’ve stayed in. Shame we only had one night there. The bedroom was comfortable, stylish and fully equipped, we couldn’t have asked for more. The little self-service coffee areas with internet access are a great idea and gave the place a relaxed atmosphere. While sitting in the bar area next to the superb restaurant you can just image the glamorous stars of the 30s coming for the latest premiere. The little cafe next door, part of the hotel, offers delightful light meals and drinks with very good service. Highly recommended.

My partner and I stayed three nights at Hotel Rival from December 11-14 2009 and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a spacious room facing Mariatorget (no balcony, but it didn't seem necessary considering it was snowing and well below freezing). We were on the fourth floor and had terrific views overlooking the rooftops of Sodermalm. One bonus was the hotel's only 'business centre' that was located right outside our room, it had two computers (with internet) and a printer, as well as coffee, tea, and biscuits which meant we could pop out for cups of tea (no coffee or tea-making facilities in the room) whenever we felt like it.

The room itself had a big canvas print of Abba over the bed, kitsch, sure, but kind of sweet. The bed was comfortable, but, like most beds in Sweden was not one double bed, but two single beds pushed together and two single duvets. Not exactly romantic, and rather disappointing.

The bathroom was great, it had a big double-ended bathtub and a separate walk-in shower, underfloor heating, speakers (listening to Abba in the shower is more fun than many may think...). However, the best bit (for us) was the great big glass wall (with blinds for modesty), which meant that you could lie in the tub with a glass of champagne (and the aforementioned Abba) looking out over the rooftops as the snow fell. Quite romantic. Dimmable light switches in the bathroom added to the ambience.

Our only other complaint regarding the room would be that it was too hot in the night. The radiator could not be turned down and so the only way to regulate temperature was by turning on the air conditioning or opening the window. Neither makes sense from an environmental point of view and should be looked at.

Others have complained about the breakfast, and whilst I agree that the staff was not overly attentive, neither in helping to find a table nor in taking additional orders, the selection was great, in fact we rarely had to eat lunch because we were so full from breakfast.

We dined at the restaurant one evening and this was the main disappointment. It was not possible to make a dinner reservation at the front desk and the maitre d' did not arrive until after 3, all rather clumsy. Also, when we arrived at the bar for a pre-dinner drink there was no table service, the little table was left dirty from the previous guest and the candle had burned down and was not replaced. No nuts offered with the drinks. Considering the price one would expect more attention to detail. Having said that the staff was very friendly.

We stayed 3 nights in this great place for a long weekend and really enjoyed especially our deluxe double room. Nice seventies design, great choice of DVDs and music, lovely lighting...and the cute bear on the chair waiting for our arrival ;) Only the bed was not meeting our expectations...we ordered a king size bed and got two beds just next to each other... The only thing we did not partcularly like was the breakfast; although the location is really nice, it was very crowded (Saturday / Sunday) and it was hard to find a table for 4 persons. Unfortunately the staff asked for our room numbers but left it to us to find a place... And the offer for breakfast was not that creative and did not change for 3 days. But the quality was good.
Although the reception staff was very friendly and helpful in providing direction, they did not seem to be very keen on helping with our luggage. A service one would expect in a hotel of this category (and price...).
In general the hotel is located in a very nice place in Södermalm, a very trendy part of Stockholm and just 15 min walk from Gamla Stan.
Besides the hotel, Stockholm is a really beautiful city. However, we were quite disappointed about the shop opening hours and the christmas markets. And we were really disappointed about the swedish Glögg...a little cup (size of a thimble) filled with a terribly sweet stuff with absolutely no alcohol for 3 to 4,5 EUR...ridiculous ;)

Great location, easy walking to Gamla Stam and main city. Nearest subway stop is Mariatorget just a minutes walk from the front door of the hotel.
Friendly staff, good breakfast, coffee/tea and computer access on 4th floor for free is great. The lending of dvd and cd is a nice touch.
cheapest way from Arlanda airport to the hotel is by taxi at €50. It takes about 40 mins.
There are a few nice bars and restaurants beside the hotel but it's also easy and safe walking to the old town too.
