Elite Plaza Hotel Goteborg
Ranked #12 of 67 Hotels in Gothenburg
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 25 March 2011

The Plaza is situated in a very central location in Gothenburg. The building is truly a grand old building. It dates from 1889 and considerable effort appears to have been taken to preserve the old fashioned charm

The service when checking in was swift and polite. Was given my room within a few minutes of arriving. The room was on the fourth floor and I was pleasantly surprised that it was fairly big. The decor was not entirely new and modern but it did fit the style of the hotel.

The room had a good sized desk, comfortable chairs as well as a very comfortable bed. There were plenty of lamps in the room but would have been nice to have a light switch controlling all lamps (now I had to walk around the room to turn on several lamps). There was no iron, ironing board or coffee/tea making facilities but there was a sign at the desk that one could ask the reception for it - did ask and it was promptly brought to my room. The hotel of course offers free wifi and a pretty good selection of TV channels.

The bathroom was fairly small but still sufficient. It had a tub (and there were bathrobes in the room).Seeing that it is a five star hotel I would have expected better quality shower gel, shampoo etc, now it was the standard stuff one finds in all Elite hotels.

The hotel has a nice pub (the same chain as in many other elite hotels, the Bishops Arms) in the basement and there is also a very nice restaurant. The spa and fitness centre are also above average.

Breakfast was not excellent but not as poor as some others have stated. The selection of bread, cold food etc was good. The hot food was limited but good quality. A bit annoying that they charge extra for additional things such as some variety's of coffee (like lattes etc) as well as omelette's, pancakes and such.

Service and quality wise I would not rate the hotel as a five star hotel but considering the price level it is not priced as a five star hotel either so to me it is really great for the price paid.

First the positive:
Nice old building
Wonderful pub downstairs (although its sister on Avenyn is a little bit better)
Good central location
Wonderful beds

The negative:
It was freezing cold in our room
The floor creaked a lot when you walked on it (probably nice floor boards under the wall to wall carpeting).
Small bathroom.
Old building means old windows means you here the nice outside - a lot of screaming and yelling in the middle of the night and some loud music too.
Breakfast was a real dissapointment. Dry bread, limited assortment, they charged you extra for anything else then plain coffee or tea. I've had much better breakfast at middle class hotels (the Stena ferries breakfast is better).

It doesn't really live up to its 5 stars and the high price - you can find a better hotel in Gothenburg.

Noise is the hotels main problem. Old building, and a lot of rooms are either facing the street with a lot of traffic or towards the atrium which holds the restaurant. Make sure you get a room not facing this two problem-areas and your are going to have a great stay. Friendly staff, great breakfast, and great location.

Stayed for one night. Impressive looking hotel, centrally located. However on arrival arrived in room to find I was in a truly tiny cramped single room with an internal window overlooking the restaurant. All my colleagues on the same rate had comfortable doubles. I asked to change to an external room and was moved to a superior at the front of the hotel for only 200 SEK more - it was about 6 times the size and a lovely room - dramatically different! I was however woken by the trams outside at 3:30am. And after putting out my card for breakfast in my room at around 9:30pm was very disappointed that it had not even been picked up the following morning. The reception staff were very apologetic and removed the extra room charge as a result - and gave me a coffee to take away, which was a nice gesture. So I will probably return but will make sure I check which room I am getting (ie side street and outside facing!).

Hotel was very good with an excellent location. The room was large and very modern. The staff were very helpful and spoke perfect English. The breakfast food was very good but the restaurant for evening meals somewhat expensive. We had a very enjoyable time in Goteborg. The hotel and the city are on our places to revisit.

The hotel is old and needs refurbishing. This is a personal issue since some may find the style classic. The hotel has a very high standing among the locals due to its history, but they have never tried to sleep there.

I have two main interests when it comes to hotels, and that is that the room needs to be quiet and clean. The cleanliness of this hotel is OK, but nothing to be proud of since there is dust balls laying around in the lobby.

Nevertheless, this is not may main issue with Elite Plaza. As other have remarked, some of the rooms are extremely noisy during nights. I had a room in the ground floor, and therefore checked with the receptionist about the noise during nighttime. He assured me that the room was quiet since it was located by the back yard and there was no traffic.

This was not the case. There is a disco nearby that closed early in the morning and backing trucks with warning sounds taking over when the disco closed. YOU CANNOT EXPECT A GOOD NIGTHS SLEEP IN THIS HOTEL. I cannot recommend this hotel for sleeping to anybody. (the food was great though)
