“Nice and charming”
Reviewed 23 August 2014

Nice hotel with interesting atmosphere. Comfortable rooms with shower. Good options for dining on the outdoor deck. Very good location for the center and attractions in Gothenburg.
I can highly recommend this hotel and would book it again for a short stay in Gothenburg.

It’s a couple of years ago since I first stayed at The Viking, and since then I have been there at least once a year. It’s a beautiful old ship moored at the River just beside a small square with cafés, ferries and pleasure boats and conveniently close to the city centre with shopping arcades etc. As an old seaman I especially like this old sailing vessel, the weather deck with, the still intact deck gear and the tall masts, and you have a spectacular view over the River and Port. The hotel itself is modern and the staff polite and professional. The rooms (cabins) are well equipped, and you really have a feeling being onboard a ship. In a way I would compare it with the “Queen Mary”, the old passenger liner converted to a hotell in the port of Long Beach California.

A stay here is highly recommended if you like things nautical. The ship has been cleverly converted, retaining the ship's beauty but made very comfortable for landlubbers too! The cabins are comfortable for a couple of nights, spacious in the circumstances, although when we stayed, in very hot weather, we were extremely glad to find we could force the bathroom porthole open and prop it up with a water bottle for a bit of fresh air! Beds are slightly narrower than normal and rather soft. No air con (I imagine it's not usually needed in Sweden). The boat doesn't move from its position so all the plumbing is normal and you don't feel any motion on the water. Staff were helpful when you asked for help and left you to do your own thing - which I prefer to overly-attentive service. Breakfast was a good buffet and the coffee was lovely and strong. I loved sitting up on the deck with my book and a drink in the early evening and just watching harbour life down below - this is a big ship, about 100m long, so you are very high up. It was great to be slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of busy city streets, yet only a few minutes' walk to the shopping mall, tourist info and then into the centre.

The strange thing about our stay was the apparent disconnect between the hotel in the ship and the bar and restaurant up on deck. The girl at the bar told us they didn't really have anything to do with each other, and this was a shame because no-one paid much attention to the deck area until the evening. In fact in the morning it was roped off and the previous night's empty bottles and full ashtrays were still around. I am sure the hotel would give guests a better experience if they offered the option of breakfast up on deck, and perhaps served sandwiches and drinks up there throughout the day. Probably all a question of staffing costs, though. I believe the hotel has changed hands fairly recently so perhaps this is all work in progress. Similarly there were huge lower deck areas, presumably for conference guests, that were closed off.

Wery nice hotel you go to sleep, and wake up in a different place, as the hotel is on the water ;) Is not a Titanic, so you can be sure that your days off will be spend nicely. Very comfortable rooms, good breakfast, nice crew on board :)

location wise this is a perfect place to explore the city from, central whilst being in it's own peace and quiet on the water. It is however, quite hard to find so a tip here Lilla Bomen is an area and as such is well sign posted when you get near, you will see a tall red and silver building, the boat is right near that, it's easy to see and make your way there. Please note though there is no parking for the hotel/boat so it will cost as you have to park either in the shopping centre car park or a public car park nearby - the hotel does do 24 hour vouchers which reduce the cost slightly.

The boat is lovely, as are the rooms full of character and it is a boat so the charm is there. They have the deck where you can sit but no comfortable deckchairs just hard back. They have a bar up there but not open, whether it ever is I don't know. Also restaurant not open except for breakfast, which was pretty good, not sensational but plenty of choice. Staff hmm there was one receptionist who could not have been more helpful but if you want any advice about things to see etc. as far as the other two were concerned they seemed to just want to get back to their computers rather than bother with any of that. Breakfast staff wonderful very diligent. The deck is a wonderful place to watch the world go by, there is a plaza right in front of the hotel and this seems to have some very diverse activities - a veteran car rally, photo shoots and you can also see the opera house. There is a combination bus and boat tour - we went in May and so the boat wasn't running in the harbour, although we did manage the canal bit after a bit of bus tour, however a word of warning check what time the last bus is, it was about 4.00 in the afternoon which cramped our style somewhat. I won't comment too much on Gothenburg as don't think it would be fair, we didn't really see enough of it, what we did see wasn't terribly impressed, very busy. Would I stay there again - absolutely it was an unusual and charming place to stay and loved the apartness from the city, while having it very

Staying on the ship was a lovely experience. We loved that you could see the masts from a long way off and that it was so convenient to the city, it was like being on a cruise. The cabin was a good size well appointed and clean, breakfast was plentiful - you have to do it. We are on board on one of the nights. The menu is limited for obvious reasons but it was very pleasant sitting on deck eating nice food and watching the sunset. They have singers most nights. I don't like noise but this was not intrusive. Drinks at the bar are limited and nothing diet. Plenty of beer. There are conference facilities - that would fun too.
We will be going again.

Room Tip: We took what we we're given. It would not have mattered where we were - it's a boat!
