“Good view of Swedish History”
Reviewed 16 July 2014

This museum offers a fascinating ruin of a Viking ship. What I liked best, however, were aspects of earlier material culture. You could see Swedish design in the making: old bits of houses, things dug up by archaeologists, etc. This helped us understand Sweden. Recommended if you are in Gothinberg!

“fascinating”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

The Viking exhibit was fascinating and compelling. It was very well done, with signage in English and Swedish. The museum also had exhibits on the rest of the history of göteborg, which were also well put together, but for me the Vikings exhibit was the best part of the museum.

“Wonderful!”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

The Stadsmuseum has a small but beautiful exhibit on Viking culture and arts with signature in Swedish and English. The large room on early Christian art is extraordinary; its only failing is the exclusive use of Swedish. The objects, however, tell their own eloquent story.
This museum is a must see.

“Give it an hour”

The part about the older history was nice, but the younger history, the part we came there for, was - well, not impressive. You´ll get some pieces from the citys story, and you´ll get i cheap. The fee will let you enter several other museums too during you stay. That´s good!

“Interesting”

This is worth going to. The Viking ship on display is the only one in Sweden and helps make sense of the Viking culture. Some myths are definitely exploded. The history of the city is done well. The exhibits are done in both English and Swedish in the main. At the moment there are two good temporary exhibitions on the top floor one on the Roma and one showing the city from the air.

Their café is excellent and you can eat outside in their pleasant courtyard too. They coped well with my fish allergy - not the easiest thing to have, especially in Sweden.

The shop is good too but some of the stuff comes from England - ironically the books about the Vikings are from both the British Museum as well as Scotland. The mark-up on price is considerable so be aware of this!

Their staff were wonderful when I was clearly in some distress from a migraine and need time out in the coolness of their lobby while waiting for my pills to kick in.
