I had an excellent stay at Greenstar Hotel Joensuu. Big TV screen, nice bed, clean room, it's cool. Only breakfast cood be a little bit more fancy. Nice staff.

Having read the previous review, I made sure we got there around 3pm in case of any difficulty. Sure enough, that is just what happened. The pleasant girl at reception checked us in and explained that we needed a chipped credit card to check in automatically. This would have been nice to know before arriving !! So thanks Laurie...
The hotel was really fine. The room was a good size. It had two comfortable beds and a clean shower/toilet with lots of hot water. The location was as good as you can get. It was one minute to the market square and city center and a few minutes away from the harbour.
We took the breakfast next morning as we needed to make an early start and thought it was well worth the 5Euro.
I would definitely recommend this hotel---just make sure your credit card is chipped OR get there when there is a receptionist on duty!

The Greenstar hotel is in the heart of downtown Joensuu. The train station isn't close by, but it is a walkable distance--around 3/4 of a mile? The sidewalks of Joensuu in the winter are snow covered, with a layer of very coarse gravel thrown on top--so was difficult to pull our wheeled suitcases through it. But after traveling for 31 hours straight, at least there was light at the end of the tunnel!!

We had made our hotel reservation over the internet and received a confirmation number via email about three days later, and everything appeared to be in order. Our reservation was made about 10 weeks prior to our arrival, and our room charges were already prepaid and charged to our credit card.

Please keep in mind that the front desk of this hotel is staffed for only about eight hours a day--a few hours around normal check-out time (mid-morning), plus a few hours around normal check-in time (mid-afternoon). Otherwise, there is no one on the premises to help you. Knowing that our train wasn't coming into Joensuu until almost 8:00 pm, we hadn't expected to serviced by someone at the front desk. There was a 24-hour kiosk in the small lobby area that we could access with our reservation number--and then the electronic key cards would pop out of the kiosk.

Unfortunately, our reservation number at the kiosk didn't work at all. It said there was no reservation under that number. The frustrating part was that there was no way to access the reservation number another way--such as by credit card number or by name. We looked all over the entry/lobby trying to find a person or phone number to help us out--to no avail. After looking at Greenstar's website after we returned, we discovered there might have been a way to make a "new" reservation through the kiosk. I honestly don't know if that was an option or not. With three people trying to make our reservation number work at the kiosk, I'm surprised we didn't see such instruction. (Or perhaps it was only in Finnish! HA!) Anyway, we felt had no choice but to leave and find another hotel for the night . . . at twice the price.

We came back the next morning with our local Finnish friend who explained our situation to the front desk person--and they did refund our money for that one night. Luckily, we had all of our emails and confirming paperwork (along with a copy of our Visa bill that listed the Greenstar prepaid charges) to verify our claim. We did stay the next two nights at the Greenstar, and had absolutely no problems. The front desk staff gave no explanation as to why our reservation number didn't work.

The hotel rooms at the Greenstar are Scandinavian modern, with two comfortable twin beds and bed coverings, a small refrigerator, and a compact en suite bathroom. There is a convertible chair which can turn into another bed, should you have a third person staying with you. The linens were all in the hotel room's closet. There was no hair dryer in the room, so you'll need to bring your own. There was a nice 32" HD television in the room, with a small number of channels to watch. The floors were wood laminate, and there were nice, heavy curtains on the windows. Hallways were well-lit, and we heard very little noise from others on our floor. The entire hotel was very clean. There was a breakfast of some sort available in the morning for a 5 Euro, although we didn't take advantage of that.

Make sure you keep your reservation number with you when leaving the hotel during the day, just in case your key card deactivates or you can't get into the hotel for some reason. We noticed a phone number on the information card in our room that gave us a phone number to call in case of an emergency. Too bad that phone number wasn't posted in the lobby when we were trying to get in . . . oh, but wait, there is no phone in the lobby to use anyway! So make sure you take that emergency number with you.

One other word of caution. We had arrived by plane in Helsinki, and then took a train to Joensuu. One of our pieces of luggage missed the transfer from Amsterdam to Helsinki, so we told KLM to send the luggage to the Greenstar. After our check-in fiasco, however, we realized that if the luggage did show up at the Greenstar, there would likely be no one at the front desk to accept it. Our Finnish friends quickly made a call to KLM and gave them their personal Joensuu address--and luckily our luggage arrived at their home the next morning. But I'm still not sure how we would ever have been reunited with our luggage had we not had another local contact address to use.

So while I would recommend this hotel on many levels, I definitely suggest arriving when the front desk staff is present to avoid any check-in problems. The Greenstar's website indicates they staff their front desk on M-F from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm and again from 3:00 - 7:00 pm. Weekend hours are even shorter. If you are able to check in with a real person, I'm suspect you won't experience the problems we had and would have a good experience at the Greenstar.
