We booked through booking.com which is more expensive but allows you to book and reserve your room with a free cancellation up to 24 hours before your stay. When we arrived the receptionist was offering someone the same room as hours at a significantly lower rate. When we told him this he offered to upgrade our room because he couldn't change our rate because of the commission paid to booking.com. We had no complaints with this, the upgraded room was great with a balcony overlooking the river and we appreciated the gesture. The room was large and quiet, the bed was comfortable.

Room Tip: We had a room on the side with a balcony facing the river.

My husband and I stayed at the Spahotel Casino in July during the Savonlinna Opera festival. For the room rate (EUR295 per night), we were expecting a luxurious room, what we got was equivalent to a cabin at a caravan park!! The room was on the top floor (third floor) and right outside the elevator door. The room itself was old and shabby with a sauna that we never used. To make things worse, we couldn't sleep because the room was directly above the bar and the curtains in our room were too short for the window, letting sunlight in first thing in the morning.

Room Tip: Do not select the sauna room on the top floor.

We booked this hotel not expecting too much according to the reviews, and this was the best way. The hotel is close to the train station and city center - all within not even ten minutes walking - and that's it with the big advantages. The service is very basic, starts at the reception and during the whole breakfast we didn't even see a hotel person. The rooms are very old, no revenovation since a veeeery long time.
If you only need a place to store your luggage and sleep and plan to be out all other time it's okay. If you are looking for a little luxury, that's not the place to go.

Room Tip: Rooms with balconies direction of the city have a nice view.

The hotel was very close to the center of town and the castle. The hotel was being renovated but we were not disturbed by any noises. The balcony door did not lock. The room was small, but I think that is typical of European hotels (at least the ones I have stayed in). The breakfast buffet had a variety of foods to choose from, although not as many hot items as I would have liked. Still, we left satisfied every day. The indoor swimming pool is very large and well taken care of. Saunas and Turkish bath were also available. The hotel is located on an island away from traffic. There are also two other small islands nearby where you can hike.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the city and the marina.

We stayed at this horrid hotel during the Savonlinna Operafestival at the beginning of July. I must sait must be the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. First of all, the room we were given had a balcony dir which was wide open when we arrived and soon we realised that the balcony door lack was broken and we were not able to close the door at all. I called the reception and after having waited for over 15 minutes the receptionist finally pickedup the phone. I told hee what the problem was and then she told me that the hotel was fullnes hokee , and asked me what the problem really was as the room we were given was located on the second floor ....
I couldn't believe my ears and told her that if there really isn't an alternative room, I would insist the door to be fixed, beforeweleave for the opera. I had no intention to leave my valuables in a room where I could not lock the balcony door .
Then, however, we were given another room ( which somehow magically turned up to be vacant after all .... ). The new room had no airconditioning, there was only one small fan to try to make the room a bit cooler. The suite had one bed room and a sauna. We had no intention to use the sauna as there was this unpleasant , unclean odour present in the entire bathroom area....
When we came back to the hotel way after midnight and went up to our room, there was this hideous loud music coming from the hotel restaurant. We waited for a while, but as it was absolutely impossible to sleep because of the noise, we went to the reception to make a complaint about the noise. There were several other people complaining about the noise down at the reception too. We were told that it was a private party at the restaurant and that they could not do anything about it .... We were absolutely astounded !!! After all, we had payed almost 200 euroa to stay at this hotel. - what a rip-off !!
If you want stay in a decent hotel and to be able to sleep in your room, avoid this hotel !

Very nice hotel on Lake Saimaa, however only few meters from the center of Savonlinna.

The hotel was renovated rooms since my last visit. Superior Plus room was simple and beautiful, it had a balcony with a beautiful view of the lake. The room also had an air condition which customer could manage full by himself.

The staff was friendly. They told about the services and attractions of Savonlinna.

The restaurant had nice list with tasty local delicacies such as Vendace.

Spa was a warm welcoming and it was fun to get to swim in the lake.

Room Tip: Ask Superior Plus room. Rooms are just renovated, with balconies and view to Lake Saimaa, full air c...

If you want to stay in the center of the city but close to nature this will be your place to stay. I visit couple of times a year in Savonlinna and stay always in this hotel. Nice personnel when you get to know them. They might seem to be little shy but short small talk melts the ice. Exceptional friendliness was there from the first moment. Renovations are done lately so if you want to stay in a new room with view to lake Saimaa ask those new rooms when doing reservation.
There is a restaurant called Amanda. Affordable prices and good food. Worth visiting!
