“Awesome Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 June 2014

A friend and I stayed here in March, and we couldn't have asked for a better winter experience in Finland. Everything about this trip was great. The hotel was small (like a big cabin), rustic, miles from town and wonderful. Breakfast was good and the one dinner we had at the hotel was delicious. We booked a dogsled trip with the hotel and after a short lesson, we spent four hours taking turns driving a dogsled through the Finnish countryside. They have longer, multi-day trips on the dogsleds, but four hours was plenty for me. The hotel staff also helped us arrange a snowmobile tour, which included driving reindeers around a short track. The reindeer portion was really touristy, but learning to drive the snowmobile was a blast. We also rented snowshoes and cross-country skis from the hotel, and spent a couple of hours in the woods around the hotel for a couple of hours.

We didn't have much luck with the Northern Lights even though the skies were clear. The geomagnetic activity level was too low for real drama, but we did see a faint glow in the sky the last two nights.

If you want to eat away from the hotel, I can also recommend the pub in Ivalo called pubi-fi. We ate dinner there twice. Their reindeer pizza is good, as are the burgers and wings.

If you love dogs, nature, beautiful surroundings then this is the place for you. I almost don't want to say how wonderful it is because want to keep it to ourselves! It's a family run business that is just perfection. The location is gorgeous, away from it all, but not actually that far from Ivalo or the airport. The rooms are lovely, clean and spacious, the facilities excellent to "make yourself at home" and I would highly recommend you try Outi's home cooking at least once whilst you are there. Yes the dogs bark, only when they are excited at the prospect of food or about to go on Husky Safari (you simply MUST do this, it's one of the best things ever!!) and I would recommend having a car, but there were other guests managing with taxis. The bonus is if there are clear skies, you will see Aurora, the icing on the cake...we will be back, absolutely LOVE it :)

Home-cooked food - breakfast included, and dinner for EUR22pp (booked one day in advance) this family-run husky safari business has recently extended to provide accommodation in a purpose built wooden guest house over three storeys, including sauna (complimentary) and communal kitchen area, with free tea, coffee, milk, etc. - there's also free WiFi and a computer for guests to use - maybe to check out the latest aurora forecast? There's no bar, but you can bring your own wine, beer, etc for dinner to supplement the water and home-made berry juice that's provided.
It's a fair walk from the town of Ivalo (just over 5k), but that means it's away from the light pollution of the town if you're borealis searching. Ivalo itself only has one pub/bar, and a couple of hotels if you're in search of an evening tipple.
You can pet all of the husky dogs (including puppies) in their pens or at their kennels, but some are a little shy - but most of them just love the free cuddles! Our favourites were Sam, Ben, Irwin, Yoko - and we made names uo for the three youngest puppies -Tippex, Smudge and Timid Tim.
If you take the sledge safaris, you're provided with suitable boots, gloves, and a thick bolier suit to supplement your own layers - all included in the price.
Are the dogs noisy? - yes, BUT only at feeding time (usually late afternoon) and when they're being prepared for their trips - which they can't wait to get out on. This starts from around 9am. Other than that, you rarely hear them if staying in the guesthouse.

We were visiting Finland for only a few days and decided to head up to Lapland. Due to the flight schedules, we had to book an extra night someone and came across Guest House Husky on TripAdvisor. That was one of the best decisions we made on our trip. The rooms are clean and very comfortable. The staff at the Guest House was warm and welcoming. And our day excursion with on a husky sled was one of the coolest things we did during our trip to Finland. The food at the Guesthouse was delicious and they even made a point to accommodate my vegan and gluten-free diet which is hard to do in Finland and even harder to do when out on an excursion. There is also a nicely appointed kitchen on the first floor of the guesthouse that is available to all guest. They have clothing, boots, snowshoes and anything you could possible need to borrow at no extra charge. Overall, it was the best night of our trip and we wished we had stayed longer!

Room Tip: Our room was on the first floor and was lovely - in the back facing the dogs. The only problem is t...

My primary reason to stay at Ivalo was the aurora. We could not made it due to the overcasting weather, but no disappointment at all. The cozy atmosphere, good food, lovely dogs and caring host of the guesthouse have granted us a perfect stay at Ivalo. We found that the guesthouse has become the second/good reason for us to stay at Ivalo.

We spent 5 nights at the Guesthouse Husky in February 2014. We had a great time there thanks to the kindness of the owners : Outi is in charge of welcoming the guests, arranging activities and anything that can be of help to her guests and her husband takes care of the more than 130 husky dogs (of which a few puppies that were so cute). The rooms are large and comfortable. Since the guesthouse is only a few years old, everything is in perfect state and works perfectly. There are plenty of mains to charge your phone and computers and the free wi-fi service is relatively fast when you think how far from everything the house is located.
We took the one day safari with the dogs and that was a fantastic experience. We were lucky since temperature was only around -5°Celsius. At midday, we stopped in a wooden hut and enjoyed a great soup that Outi's husband prepared. We also did a snowmobile tour and hired cross country skis to explore the tracks around the house. The scenery is fantastic, air is so pure and the forests with the trees covered in snow or with ice are a great memory.
The owners really care for their guests and you can feel it every time you talk to them. They are simple and efficient to give advice on the best things to do.
On our last night, we were lucky and saw some great northern lights for an hour. The sky turned green with strokes of orange. You tend to see better norther lights when the weather gets really cold which tend to go with clear skies.
We recommend the Guesthouse Husky to anyone who enjoys nature in its purest state and like to be welcome by caring hosts.
