A friend and I stayed here in March, and we couldn't have asked for a better winter experience in Finland. Everything about this trip was great. The hotel was small (like a big cabin), rustic, miles from town and wonderful. Breakfast was good and the one dinner we had at the hotel was delicious. We booked a dogsled trip with the hotel and after a short lesson, we spent four hours taking turns driving a dogsled through the Finnish countryside. They have longer, multi-day trips on the dogsleds, but four hours was plenty for me. The hotel staff also helped us arrange a snowmobile tour, which included driving reindeers around a short track. The reindeer portion was really touristy, but learning to drive the snowmobile was a blast. We also rented snowshoes and cross-country skis from the hotel, and spent a couple of hours in the woods around the hotel for a couple of hours.
We didn't have much luck with the Northern Lights even though the skies were clear. The geomagnetic activity level was too low for real drama, but we did see a faint glow in the sky the last two nights.
If you want to eat away from the hotel, I can also recommend the pub in Ivalo called pubi-fi. We ate dinner there twice. Their reindeer pizza is good, as are the burgers and wings.
