Want a totally different holiday with a new activity every day this is a must. Just heading home from this amazing trip. Snow shoeing, cross country skiing, down hill skiing, husky dog sledding, snow mobile, Quinncy building and lots more.
The base camp is great, the staff delightful and the food delicious. Relax at the end of the day in the sauna and outdoor jacuzzi. Cannot recommend this trip more highly. Lived up to all expectations and more.

We recently stayed at Basecamp on an Exodus Wilderness Week. It was all very well organised with a good balance of instruction, free time and optional activities and no horribly early starts! I went outside my comfort zone at least once a day and enjoyed (almost) every minute. An unexpected highlight was the satisfaction of having built our own quinzee, which was very hard work but very rewarding. Henri and Tessa and their colleagues looked after us very well and the food was hearty and tasty. The rooms were cosy, comfortable and quiet and it was nice to have the communal area with a fire for socialising in the evening and of course the sauna and hot tub. I recommend rolling in the snow after a sauna! It was particularly helpful to have suitable clothing provided and good to have access to the kit so we could (and did) our own snow shoeing with confidence. The only disappointment was being so tired out from all the activities that we slept through most of the group seeing the Northern Lights! A better system for waking people next time please.

Room Tip: We had a twin room which had a small mezzanine area and a balcony and a good amount of storage space...

We had an excellent week recently at Basecamp - went with Exodus. It does what it says on the tin - the place is miles from anywhere on the edge of the national park, by a lake (frozen when we there but looks great in summer too). We spent the week under the outstanding guidance of Tessa going snowshoeing, cross country skiing, dog sledding and reindeer driving. Also managed a day skiing in Ruka (tip - don't book a whole week skiing in Ruka you will ski the place out in two days max.). We also went ice climbing as an option. Highlight for me was building our own snow shelter (quinzee). A couple of us were 'brave' enough to sleep out overnight in our respective quinzee's -very cosy!
The place itself is rustic but very nice. Spread over three buildings, there is a communal log building where you eat, drink, meet etc (food all local, plentiful and great). The other two blocks are accommodation. We had a standard double room, which was fine with a good bathroom and lovely heated floors (those of a more OCD disposition may find it hard leaving wet gear on the floor to dry!). The staff are all great - very keen, fun and well-informed.
Well worth the trip!

I spent a week at Basecamp Oulanka from 09/02/14, for a Finnish Wilderness Week, trying out all kinds of winter activities. I had a fantastic week, the location and environment were superb. The Basecamp situated in a snow coated pine forest - a winter wonderland of your dreams. Adjacent to Basecamp was a frozen lake covered with thick snow. The staff were marvelous, incredibly helpful and organised, really going the full-mile to ensure that you enjoyed yourself. The cabins were clean, warm and comfortable, there was also a sauna and spa bath. Our food was served in a large central building with an open fire. The food was excellent and all produced locally. The nearest town Ruka is some distance away - about 45 km. My only slight criticism is that extra activities booked in addition to those included in the holiday were quite expensive. But overall really pleasurable experience.

Room Tip: Double rooms can be shared but can be a little cramped

My wife & I stayed at Basecamp Oulanka for 1 week, from 9 February 2014. The location is beautiful, set in the middle of a forest with a lake at the rear. The accomodation was in small cabins & the meals were at a large central cabin. It was always kept clean with plenty of hot water & an amazing under floor heating system. All the equipment was supplied for our snow shoeing.
The staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble. The standard of the food served up was excellent and never any shortage.
Our guided walks took us to some very pretty areas & were never at too faster pace.
My only small critism was that we would have liked the opportunity to spend 3 or 4 hours in Ruka but the only option was to be there all day, otherwise it was a wonderful week away & would fully recommend it.

Had a fabulous week learning snow based activities, with excellent trainers, fabulous local food and good company. Basecamp staff are kind and efficient and also love their environment and this really comes out. All the food is locally sourced, the centre is some way from the nearest town so be prepared to stay in the wilderness.

Room Tip: Book a twin room for more facilities.

I stayed a week at basecamp during the week of xmas. It was like being in the winter wonderland and out of this world. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and warm! The staff were super friendly and help. The location is very convenient for a variety of activities and the basecamp provides equipment for pretty much all the adventures. Highly recommend.
