“A lovely historic hotel”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

I would agree with most of the other accolades here. Location-wise the Kamp can't be beat. It's right in the center of everything and an easy walk if you're coming in (or leaving) by train or bus. The building itself is lovely, very clean and grand. Rooms are good size and similarly impressive in styling. Ours faced the inner courtyard which isn't necessarily the nicest view but it's not terrible either. The hotel bar and restaurant are nice as well and have some great outdoor seating when the weather is nice.

This may be nitpicking a bit, but the one thing I found slightly annoying was the room service fee, in particular if you just want a coffee or tea. There are no coffee makers or kettles in the rooms (well, there wasn't in ours so I'm assuming that goes for any room). If, as in the case of my wife, you come from a country where tea is drunk in massive quantities at all times, this creates immediate panic! One of the nights we were there I really wanted a cup of coffee and she some tea. The price of the coffee / tea itself is in line for room service at a high end hotel, no issue there at all. But any room service order also incurs a hefty fee (I won't quote it here as I'm not sure of the TripAdvisor policy, but enough to make me do a double-take), which I thought was just insane if all you want is a cup of coffee or tea. Room service prices at any hotel are quite marked up to begin with, and I am absolutely fine with that, that's how room service works. But really no need to pile fees on top of that. In any case, we went down to the bar and had coffee there instead, not the worst outcome as it is a nice setting to end an evening. Just beware of the room service fees.

Kämp Hotel has a great location, stylish building and rooms, clean facilites, and professional staff. It is for sure the top-notch hotel in Helsinki, and it comes with a pricetag. Travelling for business in Helsinki, it's a pure pleasure to stay at Kämp rather than the good but very run-of-the-mill hotels around the train station. But I'm not sure I'd like to pay the bill myself though had I've been visiting for personal purposes.
The breakfast buffet is so far the best I've had in Finnish hotels.
Two caveats though:
1. wifi comes at the outrageous price of 15-20€ a day! I thought free in-room wifi was standard in all hotels nowadays. I hestitated whether I should subtract one point for the wifi-fee, but in the end I can't think of any other hotel as worthy ans Kämp of 5/5.
2. The sauna closes at 8pm !! How is a business traveller supposed to have a sauna after work??

Room Tip: Go for court-side rooms, they are calmer.

This is a lovely old world hotel in the center of Helsinki. The bathroom was especially impressive, with a separate shower and very large tub. There was nothing lacking in the room and the staff was very helpful.

Spent two nights in this hotel. Wonderfully located - close enough to the train station to make the walk from the train/ Finnair bus manageable (probably 10 mins max), but not close enough to have the usual mess surrounding the train station spill out onto your front step. Also, basically in the center of Helsinki's historic sites and the esplanade, and a quick walk over from some of the best restaurants and bars (Juuri, Liberty or Death, Latva, Grotesk) where the younger crowd gows. Really super convenient for a quick weekend getaway. Staff is friendly and the breakfast is great. The rooms are traditionally appointed and comfortable. We've stayed at the Glo down the street before and this was a notch above in terms of room size and service, but of course completely different in terms of style. Price wise, I think they're somewhat in the same range, with Kamp being on the higher end, but the difference is very justifiable.

Would come back to the Kamp!

The hotel is perfectly situated. The building itself is gorgeous. Terrific bedding. Our room had a very dirty carpet. Also, housekeeping was very mediocre. No turn down service. Used glasses not replaced. Also, annoyingly very high charge for internet usage. Also, very high charge for very mediocre sauna. Ironic. Still, the best hotel in town.

The hotel location and luxurious make it bit expensive, I stayed one day only, it very clean and nice hotel, I recommend this hotel for business and couples.

The rooms are spacious, with white decor, old old style beds.

Stayed for two nights in early May. Classic hotel with a conservative decor that is time-tested, reminding you of what good hotel rooms are really about. Spacious, bright, and uncluttered, you can even call them luxurious, in an understated way. Excellent location on the Esplanade and 5-minute walk to the train station. Labor costs are obviously high in Finland so can't expect the same level of attentiveness as elsewhere, though the staff is generally very obliging and the rooms immaculate.
Had both dinner and breakfast in the hotel restaurant. Food is serviceable and not too overpriced. The breakfast spread is good but can be presented with a bit more thoughtfully. The shortage in staffing is most pronounced here. Tables, and dropped food on floors, tend to be left uncleaned long after the guests have departed. There is a number of very good restaurants within a two-block radius though.
