Esplanadi (or "Espa" as the locals know it) is a park in between two one-way streets that cuts across the centre of Helsinki from Kauppatori (the Market Place) in the East to Svenska Teatern (the Swedish Theatre) in the West. It's a very pleasant (if not exactly remarkable) park with statues and lots of areas for picnics. There's also various places in/around the park where you can get a coffee - though if you find a kiosk open in the park, try there unless you want to pay a fortune! :)

You can go from the Harbor Market up or the Stockmann Department Store down, but this is the summer stroll you will want to take in Helsinki. It is child friendly (we had our grandaughter in a stroller) or perfect for couples who want a bit of urban anonymity. If shopping is your thing, you can start at Stockmanns and continue all the way to the harbor where you will find the cheapest souvenirs. For the green experience stick to the center corridor where you can enjoy the grass, the trees, the flowers, and the statues--often with pigeons posing on top. Tired? Plenty of benches or just sit on the grass. Hungry? Pleasant cafes offer both indoor and outdoor seats and eats. If they are too pricey, you can partake of ice creams and other goodies from street vendors. The little band shell across from the very nice Kappeli restaurant hosts daily free entertainment. The day we were there this summer local poets were on tap interspersed with some music groups.

If going to Market Square and the markets, or going on a canal boat ride, one is almost certain to have seen this park. I had walked past a couple of times but have now taken the time to investigate further.
It is a lovely part of Helsinki for a stroll on a day like today - a very pleasant summer day. There are restaurants and cafes in the park and entertainment provided by a few buskers.
Then there is the beauty of the gardens, numerous unfenced garden beds mainly of brightly-coloured annuals together with the bright pink floribunda roses, safely enclosed by neatly clipped hedging - all of this with well-manicured lawns. While the park stretches for a few city blocks, nevertheless, it is not that large but it does provide the setting for a delightful and relaxing stroll in the park.
On the noticeboard giving the park's history and recent development, it was interesting to note the park originally was set up so the gentry could promenade. The only promenade on this visit was several locals walking their dogs and the tourists, too.
The central statue, again surrounded by a well-tended garden bed - a popular photo stop - and the other statue near the theatre, were obviously appreciated by the birds, especially the gulls who disputed any attempt by pigeons to use it as a perch.

A very lovely and relaxing place for an afternoon stroll. We stumbled upon a rocking musical performance at the park, and had fun taking pictures at the various statues all about. Then we capped the day off with dinner of some real Finnish street food (reindeer meat, potatoes, anchovies) at the open market. Fun times!

The Esplanadi is a joy to walk down, and in summer there are all sorts of musical performances from time to time. There are living statues and it is a lovely way to stroll down to the harbour.
