Reviewed 19 March 2007

Very comfortable hotel and great room on the top floor. Room 714 has a double height area with the bed and bathroom upstairs above the dininng area and with many small windows affording a view over the harbour.
Also downstairs was a living room, and adjacent bathroom, with bath, toilet, shower and sauna!

Easily the largest room I've stayed in. And on a Sunday it was a mere 68 GB pounds! Incredible.

Staff were very helpful arranging transport and a tram line (4) runs near the rear of the hotel, but it is only a 10 minutes stroll into the heart of Helsinki.

The view could have been better, but I suppose the conference centre had to go somewhere. Anyway, the hotel has bags of character from its days as a warehouse..

I really like this hotel. I have stayed in many hotels in Helsinki and this may well be among my top two favorites in front of many much more expensive hotels. It may be hard to explain, because the rooms have a strange yellow/green ambience, small windows, only recently got room safes and mostly have just a shower/no bath. I've stayed mostly for business and must say the location is better for tourists. But... the rooms are very quiet, the staff is among the friendliest in Helsinki (they must have a very good team spirit there?), the food is very good and the location is excellent for city walks in the evening, the market place, sightseeing boats and the ferry to the delightful island of Suomenlinna.

This is a terrific value hotel if you get it for the low rates (i.e. for €50-100) that the Scandic chain offers in weekends and business holidays - or naturally if you get it for free by using Hilton Honors points.
BUT at the buffet breakfast: avoid the egg/bacon part: the scrambled eggs seem to be made from powder and the bacon is "boiled" and not fried! (actually it is oven heated in a totally overloaded oven). This is unfortunately something shared by all those Scandic hotels I have stayed at.
But these are plenty to eat (of a reasonable medium quality) without taking the hot meal.

  • Liked — price, you know what you get, free internet
  • Disliked — all standard chain like.

Great hotel. Simple clean rooms with room safe, good location, excellent buffet breakfast. Got a good deal (89Euro) booking through Yeego.

On the Penisula so you feel in an upscale suburb while only a brief walk to downtown. Borrow a hotel bike. Walk around the penisula. Enjoy the endless breakfast buffet. Free WiFi in your room and in the lobby as you enjoy a drink before heading out for the night or when you return. Finland is a delight and so is this hotel.

  • Disliked — tiny room window

We used Hilton Honors points for a free night at this hotel, which was on the harbor. It's a big hotel with lots of amenities -- including a well stocked gift shop and an excellent breakfast buffet. The room was fine -- typical of the Scandic properties.

Being on the harbor, the hotel is ideal if you are coming into or out of Helsinki via the cruiselines or ferries. Market Square (where all the tourist souvenir shopping takes place) and the Esplanade (main pedestrian thoroughfare) are a short walk away.

I highly recommend this hotel.

  • Liked — Location (the harbor and Market Square are nearby) and the awesome breakfast
  • Disliked — The shower is a little dated and could use a remodel.
  • Tips/Secrets — Helsinki is awesome! Go ready to shop!

I've just stayed at the Scandic Grand Marina for 10 days for a conference & some tourism before & after. I loved it. I found my room comfortable - not plush, but then I didn't spend much time there! The WiFi access was great.

But the real treat was the foyer and the breakfast on the terrace or in the comfortable foyer, and the possibility of having a drink & snack on the terrace until late in the evening. And the breakfast was stunning!

The staff were unfailingly helpful & polite - attentive but not overly so (I find really attentive service as in similar hotels in the US to be fake & overbearing). I thought the egalitarian democratic & relaxed ethos of Helsinki reflected in the standards of service.

I liked the slightly out of centre location - it was a mere five minute walk to the harbour & the market, and less than 10 minutes to the Esplanadi and the centre of the city, but the peace & quiet made you feel in a charmed world. And I didn't have to walk through crowds of revellers on Saturday night to get to my hotel. And Helsinki's such a good city for walking & markets.

I'd go back any time.

  • Liked — Friendly staff, good amenities, the foyer and terrace
  • Disliked — Difficult to open windows
  • Tips/Secrets — Try to get a room overlooking the harbour
