“Nice and well-positioned hostel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 June 2013

I came to Helsinki for a meeting but also had 2-3 extra days to spend as a tourist, so the experience I am reporting comprises both situations.

The structure was quite nice and comfortable.

The most notable positive aspects were that the staff was very kind and helpful and that the room was comfortable and rather silent even overnight, which I really appreciated considering that this is a hostel. The room was also quite large and well furnished, with a kitchen (but you had to find kitchenware elsewhere), a sink, and a fridge, but there were no hangers inside the wardrobe. Also, an Ethernet cable was required to have in-room Internet connection: Wi-Fi coverage was only available in the lobby.
The position is fairly good, because many relevant areas of the city (including the train station) are within walking distance.

There were a few downsides. The room cleaning service only passed once per week, which meant that I had to keep for most of my stay the sole large towel I was given. Breakfast selection was quite good: there were 3 qualities of bread, cheese, ham, cucumber, tomatoes, salad, jam, cereals, hard-boiled eggs, fruit juice, milk, coffee and tea, and I was told that there have been croissants from time to time but I could never find them. However, some variations over the days would have been welcome. Last and, possibly, most annoying, is that the reception staff was a bit scarce with respect to the inflow of customers: queues often formed, and this sometimes slowed down the operations of leaving or getting back the room key, which the staff explicitly asks the guests to accomplish whenever leaving or returning to the hostel.

Overall, these downsides had a minor impact on my stay and, especially considering the average prices, I consider this Hostel as having a good price-to-quality ratio.

Room Tip: I was assigned room C619. You may want to consider that it is right next to the stairs, so there cou...

Hostel location is excellent. Almost all attractions are within walking distance (for us who like walking, for the others very good public transport is also available near the Hostel). Room was very spacious and clean, beds are very comfortable, really big kitchen with refrigerator and even oven is available. There are no cutlery and crockery, but you can take (borrow) almost everything from the room opposite the reception desk, even some food ingredients (I suppose left by previous guests or students who had temporarily left the Hostel before the summer). Sauna is also available in the early morning free of charge in two different terms for males and females. Room prices are affordable in comparison with other places in Helsinki. Only inconvenience that can come up (and that we experienced) at the end of August is that permanent occupant of your/they room (student) is moving in. You will be (kindly) asked to change your room (means packing and unpacking) what will waste some of your (precious) time although you will have booked it regularly.

Me and my friends stayed here in june 2010. Very pity that such an economy and good, calm place opened for tourists just in summer time because this is hostel only for students another time.We were pleasantly surprised when we got for funny money very spacious and clean appartments with big window, little kitchen and comfortable big shower, very nice.
Location is pretty good, in center of Helsinki closer to hospital, 10 min of walk from railroad station.
Service i have seen only 2 time when i got keys from my room and when i back it because our rooms located in other building , they was friendly with us however in all finnish hotels.
If i remember exactly breakfast is not provided is this hostel anyway is not make it worse=)
So if you need comfortable and cheap residence right in center of Helsinki (only in summer time) welcome to Hostel Academica.

We were coming back from Estonia and had to catch the morning train to St Petersburg. Needed a clean place to spend the night at an affordable price. Not very far from the train station and a 10 minute walk to the Esplanade. We reached the hostel around midnight and had no problems in getting the keys to the room. They have 24 hrs staff, friendly and helpful people. We were in a private room, all basic amenities available, neat and clean linen, cooking facility and even a fridge. Free internet was available in the lobby which was helpful. There's a supermarket across the street so we could pick up few eats and drinks before we checked in.The hostel lounge has a 24 hrs common kitchen for use.
We could not use the sauna and pool - only open in the mornings with separate times for men and women. All in all a great place at a great price.

I stayed here for a few nights. It was clean and affordable! Good location, only a short walk to the town center. Was in a 1 bedroom though and not sure what the hostel dorms are like. Comfortable and the people at the counter were great. Also, had computers available to go on the internet which was great.

We stayed there for 4 nights. The hostel location is good and the room we had was very clean. There's a supermarket across the street so it's super convenient. Unfortunately, I think that the price was too high. The staff was very helpful and friendly.

I stayed in this hostel two times in summer 2011 because cheaper than other structures in Helsinki (also if the price for a hostel usually is cheaper...!).

I stayed in the new building and also in the older one and didn't have any kind of problem, the quality was the same and the room/bathroom were clean.

The bedroom was essential but clean, the bed was ok, and there was also a small kitchen.
The staff was kind and gave us some maps of the city when we arrived.

The hostel is situated in a good position, not far from the city center and the dock where you can take the ferry to Tallinn.
