Owner description: Helsinki Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world located on an island. A 20 minute ferry (summer) or bus ride from the city centre will take you to a zoo where you can travel from cold mountain regions to dry steppes and from northern coniferous forests to the tropical rainforest. It is the perfect place to visit due to its natural environment, animals and history. Helsinki Zoo is home to 150 animal and 1000 plant species showcasing the diversity of nature. Meet the large Amur tigers, tiny pygmy marmosets, agile snow leopards, impressive wisents and dazzling, free roaming peafowls. Not to mention the indigenous Finnish species: elk, bear, wolverine, forest reindeer and more. The zoo was established already in 1889 and this makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world. Despite the long history and historic surroundings, Helsinki Zoo is a modern zoo with a mission to conserve biodiversity. Helsinki zoo breeds endangered species and participates in programs that aim to re-introduce animals to their natural habitats. Helsinki Zoo is renowned for its work in helping endangered big cats. Helsinki Zoo is the most significant annual donor for the conservation of the endangered Amur leopard and tiger.

After reading some of the reviews on Trip Advisor we were a bit hesitant to head out for a trip to Helsinki Zoo. Many of the reviews we read spoke of people not seeing many animals and generally not having a good time. What we found couldn't be more different from these reviews.

The zoo itself is on an island about 10 minutes by car from the main City Centre. It was pretty reasonable entry fees - once inside I could happily have just wandered around the lovely island for half a day even if there were no animals. Thankfully, there were plenty of animals to see - monkeys, bears, lions, tigers, camels, reptiles, horrible insects/spiders and fabulous mountain goats were just some of the animals to see - just like any normal zoo. Some animals were missing (Snow Leopard for one) but I think this may have been more to do with the time of year.

This isn't a full day out, but it is definitely worth half a day if you can manage it.

Had a day off and visited this Zoo, enjoyed it and would visit again. took the Zoo bus from the center, its only 40 minutes away, the sun was out on a cold winters day. This small island is perfect for a Zoo and saw a lot of animals and would return.

A great way to spend and nice day

What to do on Eastern in Helsinki when everything is closed down and the sun is shining? Get to the zoo island, Korkeasaari in the harbor of Helsinki. The big cats, bear and monkeys were active giving a thrill to our. 9 year daughter. Time well spent.

The nicest way to enjoy this zoo is to arrive by boat from the market square! There are cafés on the zoo island, but the food in the restaurants is of quite low quality. Pick nick basket is the local way!

Except some cute bears, we saw next to no animals. I mean if you open the gates of the Zoo make sure people who pay to watch the animals actually see the animals. Except for the bears, walibi's and two owls and a lion we saw nothing at all.
They should close the zoo in the winter if they all stay inside (without the option of us looking inside)
