Owner description: Korkeasaari Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world located on an island. A 20 minute ferry (summer) or bus ride from Helsinki city centre will take you to a zoo where you can travel from cold mountain regions to dry steppes and from northern coniferous forests to the tropical rainforest. It is the perfect place to visit due to its natural environment, animals and history. Korkeasaari Zoo is home to 150 animals and 1,000 plant species showcasing the diversity of nature. Korkeasaari Zoo was established already in 1889 and this makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world. Despite the long history and historic surroundings, Korkeasaari Zoo is a modern zoo with a mission to conserve biodiversity. Korkeasaari Zoo breeds endangered species and participates in programs that aim to reintroduce animals to their natural habitats. Free map at the entrance. At least one restaurant open around the year, more services during summer. Outdoor and indoor picnic areas, hut with fireplace.
Useful Information: Bathroom facilities, Activities for older children, Activities for young children, Food available for purchase

We took the local bus from Helsinki station (as recommended) which seemed to take forever as it wound it's way through suburbia.

Upon arrival, purchased lunch at the café (standard overpriced sandwiches) and then headed off.

Whilst it's a lovely walk, there seemed to be a large amount of empty enclosures which was disappointing. There is also no specified nocturnal area that we found so many night time animals were asleep and completely hidden.

One of the few delights of this zoo is that there are peacocks walking around amongst the visitors.

Having only spent around 2 to 3 hours here absolute maximum, grandchildren were bored due to lack of visible animals and we caught the ferry back to Helsinki.

I visited Korkeasaari with my mother and my partner, and we had a lovely time walking around the island. We were lucky enough to see a lot of baby animals and everything seemed to be well taken care of.

This is a place where you might not want to visit on a really hot weather or a rainy day, as you spend a lot of time outdoors and there is really a lot to see. From time to time the routes around the Zoo were a bit confusing. In my opinion, the Zoo is a great attraction especially for families with children, but the prices in the cafeterias and restaurants are very high, so if you are on a budget you may want to take your own food - and consider the birds that walk around freely.

Overall we had a great experience!

If you'd like to spend some time outdoor but not ready for hiking challenges, Korkeasaari is definitely your place. Take some snacks and sandwiches with you, catch the boat from Helsinki citycenter and enjoy this wonderful island and fresh Baltic weather all year around. Even more! There are animals! Young playful lions right now are so awesome!
Note: if you come to the animal's place and it looks like nobody is there, try to wait more than 5 sec before being disappointed and run to the next one.

A lovely little place to visit providing the weather is nice, but the layout is slightly confusing and a lot of places on the island seemed to be under construction. Some of the enclosures seemed quite small but there is a good range of animals to see, my personal favourite being either the reindeer or the raccoons! Didn't see any of the big cats unfortunately.
The ferry ride you can get across to the island also offers some beautiful sights and is only an additional €6 for a return trip. It runs pretty regularly from the south harbour.
Little tip: there's a gorgeous place to sit on the shore near the bear enclosure, which has stunning views across the water and would be perfect for a picnic!

This is the best zoo I've ever visited in my life (giving that I'm from a developing country and not yet have chances to visit many zoos in Europe). Nevertheless, it's worth a visit. Everything is really nice. The open air is refreshing. The facilities are very good too. And watch out for the Zoo Day in August, when you can enter for free!
