Owner description: Helsinki Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world located on an island. A 20 minute ferry (summer) or bus ride from the city centre will take you to a zoo where you can travel from cold mountain regions to dry steppes and from northern coniferous forests to the tropical rainforest. It is the perfect place to visit due to its natural environment, animals and history. Helsinki Zoo is home to 150 animal and 1000 plant species showcasing the diversity of nature. Meet the large Amur tigers, tiny pygmy marmosets, agile snow leopards, impressive wisents and dazzling, free roaming peafowls. Not to mention the indigenous Finnish species: elk, bear, wolverine, forest reindeer and more. The zoo was established already in 1889 and this makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world. Despite the long history and historic surroundings, Helsinki Zoo is a modern zoo with a mission to conserve biodiversity. Helsinki zoo breeds endangered species and participates in programs that aim to re-introduce animals to their natural habitats. Helsinki Zoo is renowned for its work in helping endangered big cats. Helsinki Zoo is the most significant annual donor for the conservation of the endangered Amur leopard and tiger.

Take a short boat trip from the market square and visit the Korkeasaari Zoo. It is located on an Island next to Helsinki and includes a huge variety of animals. Also Finnish fauna is present. Kids will love it!

This was a second time we visited this zoo. Now with the children, earlier by two of us. Most of the animals were sleeping or hiding somewhere. Children got bored and tired. Island atmosphere is quite nice. Next time we will save our money for something else.

I visited Korkeasaari last Saturday. My previous visit was more than 30 years ago and I didn't have any positive memories of it. This time I went there with my grand children hoping for at least some improvements. Needless to say that we all were disappointed. Couple of horses and birds - that's it.
If you like to see wild animals you better buy a CD and watch at them at home.

The island is nice but very poky for all that crowd. Especially childrens expectations were not fulfilled.
For our group of 10 people this was not the first time but absolutely the last. I can not recommend.

If this zoo wasn't on the island, I would give only 2 "stars" for it, but the surroundings are great and the boat trip to Korkeasaari is nice. It was very crowded on a sunny Sathurday, so that was not so enjoyable. There were some very interesting animals (like some of the big cats) but many of the animals were hiding somewhere not to be seen. The monkey house was a joke after visiting some great Zoos in europe where there are a lot of monkeys and you could watch they a long time. In Korkeasaari there were like 3 monkeys and they were not even outside but inside and you could hardly see them behind all the people.

So over all not so special zoo, the only special thing was the location but othervice pretty boring. I also hoped a bigger areas for some of the animals! 18 euros for the ticket and the boat trips was ok price. You can reach the island by boat from Hakaniemi or Kauppatori and also there is a bridge so you can get there by bus aswell.

The transfer with boat is nice and the surroundings are good for an outing. But you pay a lot for a ZOO. And in the end both the children and the adults have no recollection of animals. Apart from the geese and seagulls.,
