“An excellent Tristan”
Reviewed 29 May 2013

The Finnish National Opera is up to the standard of the best opera houses in Europe. I saw the new 2013 staging of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde on May 25th 2013. A really great performance it was. The staging was simple but very imaginative and the cast was absolutely top-class. Robert Dean Smith, one of the greatest "Heldentenors" at present, sang Tristan, Marion Ammann was Isolde, Lilly Paasikivi sang Brangäne and the great Matti Salminen (still going strong) was in the role of King Marke. Pinchas Steinberg conducted the whole thing. A special mention must be made of the Finnish National Opera's orchestra. What a massive band of players! I would also like to mention the really pleasing telephone service when I ordered my ticket (the very last available!) by phone in April. There was no problem making a reservation by phone. They would keep it until the day before the performance and no need to pay in advance

“Magic Flute by Mozart”
Reviewed 2 October 2012

We expected "a quiet Monday night magic flute" by Mozart but it was 3/4 full and audience was well entertained by the performance. The building itself is absolutely brilliant, stylish and well functioning. We ordered a half time table with "wines" before the show, paid it in advance and got exactly what we orderded and paid for.
The seats were in the middle of the first row in the second balcony and the view couldn't be any better. Orchestra played well and apart from couple of dodgy solo sessions in the first half of the opera the artists were having a great evening. Especially the second half of the magic flute was just brilliant.
If you arrive by car, there are lots of 24hr or 4hr free parking spaces north from the opera house in front of the Olympic Stadium.

“A high class opera house”
Reviewed 21 September 2012

Spread over the past 15 years, I have seen 11 performances at this opera house. Musical standards are high and the productions I have seen tend to be fairly "safe". Their Ring Cycle was perhaps the most satisfying that I have seen anywhere. The auditorium is of medium size, with excellent acoustics and comfortable seating. Surtitles include English. For a small country, Finland "punches above its weight" in singers. Matti Salminen, Tommy Hakala, Jorma Hynninen, Lilli Paasikivi, Jorma Silvasti and the fabulous Karita Mattila all appear from time to time. There is one huge foyer which serves all areas of the house and usually one can find a place to sit during intervals. The side of the house is mainly glass and looks out on a park and lake. The idea that one has to be formally dressed at the opera is a myth, but the audience here - while not formal - is amongst the most elegantly attired anywhere.

“Aida in Finnish National Opera”
Reviewed 3 September 2012

We have visited many operas, but Aida in Helsinki was really enjoyment. The opera building is not very old, is quite modern and with great acustic. Subtitles in Swedish, Finnish and English were just a big plus.
