“A tour de force of excellent small dishes”
Reviewed 28 August 2013 via mobile

An amazing tasting menu in a charmingly small restaurant. Several "hand-crafted", amazingly fresh tastes. This was one of the top meals of a two-week tour of Scandinavia. Don't be put off by the lack of menu, just trust that the chef will surprise and deliver. Also drank a reasonably priced bottle of wine.

“Fabulous modern Finnish”
Reviewed 16 August 2013

Seats only 18. Fixed menu for 57€ for what they say is four courses but with all the plate cleansers and three types of bread and amuse bouches, and sweets its more like 10. The waiter explained all the food to us and the inspiration behind it. Each course was presented on beautiful artisan plates.
The food is fabulous and the service is impeccable. Afterwards they offered to call a taxi and then gave us a treat to take home. We would definitely go again.

“Scandinavia - revisited”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

Restaurant is very small, maybe 20 seats.
Food style is now trendy "tasting menus" and SPIS is reinventing several Finnish foods is new ways. Traditional Summer soup, which is not very favorite for several Finns for example was converted into a salad, which in fact was magnificent.
Service was not excellent, the staff tried their best, but I would describe them being like lost.
Restaurant has excellent choice of drinks, several that are unique for them.

“Terrific Modern Finnish Food”
Reviewed 23 July 2013

On Saturday evening July 20th, my wife and I dined at Spis which is a charming, 18-seat space on a non-description street in the Design District.  We had the three course tasting menu with the accompanying wines.  The perfectly prepared and artfully arranged food is sourced locally and gets its inspiration from traditional Finnish dishes.  This was exemplified by the "Summer Soup as Salad."  The "soup" arrived on a narrow ceramic platter and the perfectly prepared peas, carrot, potatoes and greens were artfully arranged in a row.  The vegetables were topped with a foam made from the original soup.  The next course was a poached scallop perfumed with vanilla accompanied with smoked salsify.  The meat course was a slice of veal cheek the was tender, flavorful and rich.  Several small courses were served between the three main courses. Our servers explained each course was well as the wines and were extremely attentive throughout our meal.  I highly recommend Spis.

“Nice cozy place with a Scandinavian atmosfere, but...”
Reviewed 30 May 2013

Well, it's a small restaurant, I think you can sit 18 people at most, the decor is very minimalistic, glasses without steam, light wood, bare walls, of course the main attraction here supposed to be the food. Oh yes, you will need a reservation.
Service is perfect, very attentive, bordering OCD care with everything. The food, ahh the food, presentation is just superb, different types of chinaware, wood or porcelain, they are very creative and colorful, everything looks pretty, and also the waitress will explain to you what you are served, but lacks that wow factor when you put in your mouth, every thing tasted bland and just regular, nothing special, besides we had two dishes with the same ingredients (anise and carrot) in a 14 tasting menu, that is really boring, the only dish the I really enjoyed was the Artichoke sorbet.

Price wise was ok for 2 people and 4 glases of wine, $160,00 euros, I will not be back.

For the same kind of experience you should try A21 or G.W. Sundman, yes the are more expensive but well worth it.
