This was the first European sauna I have ever been to and it was everything I had hoped for. So unique and true to its form. The cost was very reasonable and you can bring your own beer. I will go back when I get to Helsinki again.

Tips for a smooth experience.

Bring two towels from your hotel. One to sit on can be a small one, just enough to cover the real estate of your seated bum. The other one is to dry off with when you're finally done.

Lockers provided can handle a day or backpack.

Bring your own water and stick in the freezer at entrance.

Get over being naked. Nobody cares.

Go to shower room first and use provided gel soap in tub. If you don't shower first you will stink up the sauna. That's rude and gross.

Big metal buckets are in the corner next to a spigot. Fill with cold water and splash cold water on yourself as needed.

Experiment with heat by sitting in different locations within sauna.

Stay in the sauna until you think you can't take it anymore then dash to the shower room for a quick rinse with cold water. Very invigorating. Repeat. I stayed a good 2.5 hours and could've stayed longer.

Hydrate. Beer is available but I opted for water.

An elderly lady "washer" will be in there. 9 euro to be washed. Very relaxing, though you're splayed naked for all to see. Just don't worry about that. She also isn't going to go anywhere near your junk. So it's all good. I gave a small tip.

I couldn't get a massage because it requires a one-day advanced notice. Would've been great I'm sure.

Good mix of local and tourist clientele.

For a quite acceptable 12 euros, you get an authentic sauna experience. Recommended for enthusiasts and sauna rookies as well. The temperature is quite acceptable.

There are three traditional public saunas left in Helsinki. Kotiharjun Sauna is my favourite of these. The atmosphere here is unique with people from all walks of life enjoying the sauna experience with a communal dressing room, simple tiled shower room and a big sauna with perfect steam from a giant wood burning stove. You can rent a towel and buy a bath whisk from the counter. You can also bring your own water and beer to sauna and keep them in a freezer.

After the sauna you can cool yourself outside the building sitting on benches by the pavement. Great fun during winter time!

People tend to have good time especially on Friday evenings and Saturdays. It is more quiet during the afternoons and other days of the week.

There are separate facilities form men and women. And foreign visitors are always welcome here.

A great Finnish experience, wonderful institution. The place is really clean, the woodburning sauna is wonderful, locker space provided. Bring a towel or you can rent if necessary. You can get drinks or bring your own and put them in the freezer to chill as you warm up, then sip away on the street outside and watch the city go by.
