“Pay for what you get”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2014

I stayed here b/c I needed a room ASAP and got a great price on Orbitz (+ a coupon from Retail Me Not). I would only stay here again for the right price. The apt I got was clean-ish, but tired. There were 2 burned out light bulbs and pretty much everything could have used a good deep cleaning. The free wifi was pretty much useless. I was able to connect, but it would drop out constantly. There's a sauna, but it was booked the entire time I was there. I was on the first floor next to the door and I could hear everybody coming and going. It's a short walk from the tram stop, but the hotel is poorly marked. (Hint: it's across the street from the pharmacy) There aren't any restaurants nearby that I saw. It was decent for one night, but I prob wouldn't stay again.

Before booking here, I read quite a few very positive reviews in German, but since our own experience I've read more and realise that there are also many negative ones. So, it seems a matter of luck whether you get a clean and functioning apartment or not. Most of the complaints are about lacking cleanliness, and this was one of our problems as well. The shower doors, the bedspread and the chair seats were the worst dirt spots, in both apartments we had. We had two because in the first one the radiators stopped working. Luckily we were able to move to an equivalent apartment, which was not only warm, but also somewhat cleaner than the first. In both apartments it was obvious that more attention needs to be paid to maintenance: missing light bulbs, missing or wobbly shelf above the bathroom sink, one of three shower door partitions missing, etc. On one day, we also had sewage odor from the bathroom drain. I want to emphasise that the management reacted very quickly and politely when we reported these problems and tried to solve them.
In general, apartment hotels are a good thing for travellers on a budget - it's possible to save quite a bit of money by fixing your own breakfast and some meals, and because there is less service, the prices can be very reasonable. We paid 440 Euros for six nights, two persons. A well-stocked grocery store is very close. Eating out is expensive in Helsinki, and Finnisch food is nothing to rave about in my opinion.
One very positive aspect of this particular apartment hotel is its location. The streetcar stops 4 and 4T are only about two minutes away and the street cars come very often. Even without the streetcar many attractions, and the ferries, can be reached very quickly.

Stayed here for 2 nights and would not stay again. Apartment was clean and had enough room but was very plain and uninspiring. No toaster and no oven, and 2 grill plates that did not heat up enough for a toasted sandwich. Lift that stopped on a landing between floors so suitcases had to still be carried up or down to your floor. Look elsewhere for better value.

As an independent solo traveller, I like being on my own and don't require much in the way of amenities. However, it's unlikely that I'll stay at the Hellsten Senate again. It's a real shame, because the apartment was very spacious given the price, and the location is convenient; the minuses were a bit too much for me, though.

Minuses: A considerable number of marks and/or stains on the walls; improperly functioning living room heater; permament odor of sewage in bathroom's floor drainage; visibly questionable towel cleanliness.

Pluses: Full kitchen with microwave and big refrigerator, well-stocked grocery store around the corner, tram stops (4 and 4T) one half block away, pleasant front desk staff at check in, easy check out.

I slept there for only one night for professional reasons. It was quiet, all was clean and the beds were comfortable. It was very practical to have two bathrooms in this apartment where we were four. A lot of space for us all, and very well situated (not far from the Tuomiokirkko Cathedral).
The only bad point was the reception missing during the week end.

We stayed here for four nights over the new year period. We had emailed the hotel prior to our arrival to clarify the arrival process and they were extremely helpful and responsive. There was absolutely no problem with gaining access to the apartment, despite not arriving until almost midnight, the main door code worked fine, there was someone to answer the telephone at reception and automatically validate our room key cards. It all worked smoothly.
Our apartment was spacious, not overly clean, but not dirty either. Bedding and towels were clean, kitchen and bathroom could have done with little more elbow grease! Large open plan kitchen/dining/sitting area. Big bedroom with double bed an deals in wardrobe. Tons of storage space. Bathroom with just a shower with removable shower head. Plenty of cupboards and drawers in the bathroom.
Kitchen was equipped with microwave, two ring stove top, large fridge freezer, kettle, coffee maker, lots of crockery and cutlery, tea towel, washing up liquid and brush, and kitchen roll.
Very warm...but could turn down the radiators when we got too hot.
There is a laundry room in the basement, with two washing machines and two dryers - free of charge.
Limited noise from other apartments, all quiet for a few days, but then some noise when a family with a young child moved into the apartment next door, but no worse than other hotels/apartments.
Area is great, very easy walk to Helsinki's main attractions, and the number 4 tram stops in the adjacent street (a one minute walk) which takes you to the main areas and the central railway station.
Well stocked supermarket a three minute walk away, so very easy to self cater.
Easy transfer from Helsinki Airport ... either the regional bus or the Finnair bus which both stop at the central railway station, where a two minute walk will connect you with the number 4 tram. We found Helsinki Regional Transport (HRT) website was brilliant, with an excellent route planner.
Apartment is in a nice location, lots of old stylish buildings, mostly residential, so quiet and safe.
All in all, would recommend staying here.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 December 2013 via mobile

We stayed in this place early December. It was our first time in Finland and we absolutely had no idea what to expect. We didn't have very high expectations from the reviews here but this place is EXCELLENT and we really don't know what people have had an problem with. The apartments are HUGE. We had a very spacious lounge, kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and a beautiful bedroom with an ensuite. All for the price of a cheap hotel or a hostel. The rooms were very well heated, clean and beautiful.
The place is a 10-15 minute walk from the centre of town but there is a tram also which is only a 2 minute walk from the hotel.
You could take the Finnair bus followed by tram when you get here from the airport.
Unfortunately tea and coffee are not provided but at the price we paid, that really wasn't an issue, although it might have been a nice touch.
There was a sauna (obviously it being Finland) which is great! There was free laundry, and a locked luggage storage area. And free wifi through the hotel.
If you come after hours or on weekends, check in is via phone which was not an issue at all. The staff were very helpful and nice when we did meet them.
Room services were once a week, but this is well specified in the policy and they are self serviced apartments so I think that's absolutely fine.
Overall, this was an excellent place to live in Helsinki and we would recommend it to anybody.
