The hotel is located in an old prison, which gives it a special experience. The old cells are transformed to hotelrooms, and the central hall with the galleries and castiron stairs are still in place.
The rooms are nice, try to get one in the prison block, as there are also rooms in other buildings which probably were guard wards. Also nice, but you 'll miss the "escape from Alcatraz" feeling.
Rooms are well equiped, bathroom with bath / shower, mini bar, TV and airconditioning.
Breakfast Is very good, eggs are made to order any style you like, fruit, salmon (of course, it's Scandinavia) etc.
There is free Wifi, but in the outer blocks coverage is not good, but you can sit in the lounge (where there is also a computer you can use for free).
Hotel is located 15 a 20 min walk to the city center, but there is also a tram stop in front of the hotel. Then you're in the center in 5 min.

Room Tip: If you go for the prison feeling (a very luxurious prison...) ask for a room in the main building. M...

I can completly recommend this hotel for a short stay in Helsinki. As it's a former prison, it is rather interesting and has a bit more character than the usual best western hotels. It is in walking distance from the center, you can also take the tram. The rooms are nicely decorated, with high ceilings and high windows. Comfy beds and a nice bathroom!Very nice for the price you're paying!
Breakfast is ok, it was a bit crowded, the choice of food is ok. There's free wireless in the lobby, not in the rooms though. There is no aircon in the rooms (I think it was unusually hot in Helsinki that weekend but it was really to warm in the rooms without aircon, we then asked for the key to open the windows).
It was a nice experience and I might consider staying there again if I ever will visit Helsinki again.

This hotel has lots of character. To get here from the rail station you need to catch the tram line number 4 - you can pay on the tram if you don't buy tickets beforehand. The tram stops right outside the hotel. the hotel reception staff were very friendly and were keen to help us with train times/tram times to the airport and offered to provide a breakfast box for our early morning check out.

Walking out of reception you see the renovated prison, with all the iron staircases. The room itself was on ground floor and was fairly big with wifi, flatscreen tv, kettle, sofa and desk and had old photos of Helsinki on the walls. The bathroom was a good size and had a lovely shower.

I would certainly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again.

I like staying a bit off the beaten path. This hotel was a fun experience. The location on the tram line is perfect (you can purchase an unlimited tram/bus pass at the railway station making the hotel relatively convenient to anywhere in Helsinki). My room was comfortable and clean. Since it was still cold outside, I really enjoyed the heated bathroom floors.. Internet access in the room requires a cable so be prepared. The breakfasts were excellent (the jam was so good). I had two minor issues: 1) the side of the bath/shower is so high it was almost uncomfortable to get in/out; and 2) coffee at breakfast was a bit disapppointing as cups needed replenishing and the machine for lattes was difficult to operate. I thought the staff at the front desk were superb - very friendly and helpful. For a more central location, I would try the Hotel Kamp (which is expensive). For the money and the uniqueness, the Best Western Premier Katajanokka is is a great choice; you won't be disappointed.

Staying in a converted prison was a great experience. Quite unusual to look through the bars on your window and see the old prision walls but the renovations were done very well - no stainless steel at all. Luxury bathroom, comfortable bed and plenty of space for a European hotel. No sounds from your neighbours either as the original walls are still there in the old wing. Great location as walking distance to the ferry terminal and a short walk into Helsinki's main shopping and sightseeing area.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the old section which used to be the prison for a unique experience.

Exactly what you paid for.
Nice stuff and personel.
Clean and perfect room service.
Walls are too thick, so you cant receive internet in every room, i had to go to the lobby. They could have used some wireless spots to strengthen the sognal.
Very close to city center. Tram station in front of hotel gate.

This hotel is in a old Jail ! Don't be worried, they have done it up well and is a very comfortable hotel. They have taken the Jail theme to quite an extent. The staff puts on jail shirts with a convict number ( actually their phone number), some of the windows have bars, the cofee is served in steel mugs and plates are of steel ! etc etc. It is fun. It is also located in a area close to the city center, but a little aloof. So you get the feel of staying in the local settings. Nice hotel.
