“Spacious, nicely decorated room”
Reviewed 12 June 2012

My partner and I stayed for two nights in Katanjanokka. The room was much larger than I had anticipated, and nicely decorated. The bathroom was also very roomy. Clean and fresh.

Good breakfast.

If I try really hard to think of anyting negative, the only thing I can come up with is that I prefer my coffee stronger, not a reason not to choose this hotel.

Old Helsinki prison transformed into a very comfortable hotel; luckily each room has been refurbished from 3 former cells. Very quiet indeed, breakfast in the cellar and very cozy lobby

This is a nice hotel with some fine amenities. The fact that it's a converted jail is fun, and that's what attracted me in the first place, but in the end, it's just a hotel. It's clean, has a great breakfast, and is an easy walk to the center. But the neighborhood where this hotel is located has virtually nothing but apartment buildings, so if spend your day sightseeing and then go back to the hotel in the evening, you have no nearby options for going out for dinner or drinks or anything.

If you are traveling to visit Helsinki as a tourist, I'd recommend finding a hotel in the center.

As you've gathered from the other reviews, this really (really) is a converted prison. It was a prison right up to 2002 so given the time since conversion, the inside is modern, clean and fresh. The conversion has kept a lot of original features - the metal cell doors are cool and the walkways with metal staircases are a fantastic touch.

Anyway... the hotel itself. Very clean and beds very comfortable; this combined with the silence (the walls must be a metre thick!) means I had a very good night's sleep. The location is good, not bang in the centre but only a nice 10 minute walk away. The tram line goes right past the hotel. There is also parking at the hotel (€20 per 24 hours) and a gym. The internet didn't work and no wifi in the rooms. The breakfast is very good.

The hotel was relatively cheap so for the character and the luxury on offer I give it 5 stars.

Great hotel, value price, friendly and helpful staff. Really interesting ex prison with metre thick walls. Only a 10 minute walk to city centre or 2 minutes by number 4 tram. Helsinki is expensive though, beer 6 euros and never saw a bottle of wine for under 30. Best value is day ticket on public transport 7 euros much better value that 20 euro hop on hop off bus. Many of Helsinki raods and pavements are cobbled so not vey wheelchair or pram friendly. Also easy to get to Tallinn for the day on the ferry /45 euros.

Room Tip: ask for one on ground floor

The hotel is located in an old prison, which gives it a special experience. The old cells are transformed to hotelrooms, and the central hall with the galleries and castiron stairs are still in place.
The rooms are nice, try to get one in the prison block, as there are also rooms in other buildings which probably were guard wards. Also nice, but you 'll miss the "escape from Alcatraz" feeling.
Rooms are well equiped, bathroom with bath / shower, mini bar, TV and airconditioning.
Breakfast Is very good, eggs are made to order any style you like, fruit, salmon (of course, it's Scandinavia) etc.
There is free Wifi, but in the outer blocks coverage is not good, but you can sit in the lounge (where there is also a computer you can use for free).
Hotel is located 15 a 20 min walk to the city center, but there is also a tram stop in front of the hotel. Then you're in the center in 5 min.

Room Tip: If you go for the prison feeling (a very luxurious prison...) ask for a room in the main building. M...

I can completly recommend this hotel for a short stay in Helsinki. As it's a former prison, it is rather interesting and has a bit more character than the usual best western hotels. It is in walking distance from the center, you can also take the tram. The rooms are nicely decorated, with high ceilings and high windows. Comfy beds and a nice bathroom!Very nice for the price you're paying!
Breakfast is ok, it was a bit crowded, the choice of food is ok. There's free wireless in the lobby, not in the rooms though. There is no aircon in the rooms (I think it was unusually hot in Helsinki that weekend but it was really to warm in the rooms without aircon, we then asked for the key to open the windows).
It was a nice experience and I might consider staying there again if I ever will visit Helsinki again.
