“Good hotel and great Reception staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2012

This is a quirky hotel given the prison theme, staff in striped uniforms and the decor retains the authenticity of the building's history. We had a suite on the 3rd floor which was really comfortable, spacious and had its own sauna. However, best thing about this hotel was the staff and especcially Annika at Reception. When we arrived, we had left a mobile phone in the taxi. Witihn minutes, she had sent an alert to the centralized Taxi service and we had the phone delivered to us.also, during our stay, she made every possible arrangement to make our stay a pleasurable one including arrranging Breakfast boxes when we had an early check-out before the restaurant opened. We ate in the restaurant on one evening. Food was fine, nothing special and what you might expect in a hotel. The outside terrace bar is a gem in good weather. another big big plus of staying at this hotel is that Tram #4 stops literally outside the hotel and allows you to travel all over helsinki on its fantastic Tram system. For a shot stay in Helsinki, would really recommend Katajanokka.

what an amazing idea ~ converting an old prison into a hotel! and i completely agree with all of the previous reviews saying that by keeping the outer walls intact they really added to the whole idea + experience of this theme.

the jailbird restaurant has great food, as well as a really nice outdoor terrace w/ live music in the evening. yes, the rooms are a *bit* on the small side, though not unbearably so. (because in theory, you'll only be in your room to shower + sleep ~ especially in this great city!!)

along those lines, helsinki is compact, clean, charming, friendly, very easy to get around... everything i thought st. petersburg was going to be, but wasn't. i can't recommend spending time in this city enough, even if it's only for a day.

We were at first not sure we wanted to stay on the lower level, but after a few nights in central Finland in June, with almost constant daylight, we were terribly grateful for the 'prison' atmosphere with quiet and darkness just to get us back on our sleep schedule.
The prison theme is a bit over-used, and the rooms are small, but in general, a nice addition to the overpriced Helsinki hotel scene.

Good hotel. Used to be a prison and that concept is everywhere, including the windows which you can only open if you get the handle at the reception.
The staff is pretty formal, not really enthusiastic...
Breakfast is good, nice buffet including lots of salmon. The prisoncells have been converted into rooms. They used 5 cells to create 2 rooms. The beds are a bit too soft and the pillows pretty bad. The bathroom is small and if you are not so fit you might have trouble to get into the bath which is also the shower (so not really suitable for elderly or handicapped people).
The bar closes early, even during the football matches of Euro2012.
Location is good. It is close to the city center and a tram (nr 4) stops just in front of the hotel, but you can also easily walk (5-10 min).

This hotel was simply delightful. It used to be a prison but has been tastefully converted into a top-rate place of accommodation for non-convicts. Everything was great about it, including premises, staff and location. Restaurant was excellent as well. It's a bit of a hike into the center of town (but not bad); however, the tram runs right in front of the hotel so no problems getting there if you're walked out. It's also located in the premier district for Art Nouveau (Jugenstil) architecture, so if you're interested in this wonderful style, this is the place to stay. (Also a five minute or so walk to the ferry from Tallinn, so perfect location if you're coming from Estonia.) My one complaint about the room was that the housekeeper didn't wash the dirty coffee cups, which I found a bit odd. One other thing -- this was the most comfortable bed on our trip to four Baltic cities.

This is a unique hotel built into an historic jail. They did a very clever job on the renovation. Our room had once been two jail cells. There were good and bad parts of staying in this hotel. The good parts were: the friendly front desk staff, the bed was very comfortable, the room was very quiet (it used to me a jail, the walls are three feet thick), good television coverage in multiple languages, and good free Internet service in the room. There is no WiFi in the rooms due to the thick concrete walls but the front desk loaned us a cable and the Internet service was great. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk to Senate Square but Tram #4 stops at the front gate and takes you to town very quickly. There are downsides to being there. These include the fact that there are really no windows to open or look out from your room. It used to be a jail so the windows are up very high and don't open. There is plenty of light but no view. Our room had a strange smell coming from the shower drain and we never could quite get rid of it and no way to open windows to air out room. The hallway outside our room was used to store linen carts and cleaning supplies. It looked junky and one night there were carts left in front of our door that we had to push out of the way to leave the room. The breakfast room is in the basement and very dark and the breakfast staff was not very friendly. I thought that the restaurant prices for lunch and dinner were ridiculously high. The cheapest thing on the menu was a hamburger for $24. A cup of coffee was $10.50. It was an intersting experience staying there but I don't think I would stay there again.
