We stayed in the holiday Inn in the city of Turku for 2 nights. The hotel location is very good. A walking distance from the river bank and from the main shopping street. We were disappointed from the room size that was small to what we use to see at the Holiday Inn chine...
Breakfast was OK ( average ) and we didn't feel that we got our value for the price that we paid.

Oh god, where to start? probably with the few upsides of the hotel: location is very good and central, breakfast is plentiful and fresh (and the restaurant serves great food in the evening) and the staff tries hard (although it seems to be severly understaffed).

The negatives? well, pretty much else, actually. Upon entry, it seems like a hotel from the 80's - everything is so old! Got upgraded to an executive room as a Platinum member, but this didn't cover the problems - dated and dirty room (probably the dustiest and dirtiest curtains I have ever seen!), dirty bathroom (mold everywhere, filthy shower curtain), dirty carpet... - you get the picture.

Renovation has to take place - ASAP.

Dear primitivepios,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We value you as an IHG Rewards Club Platinum member.
Let me express my deepest apologies for all the inconvenience occured on your last stay in August.

Hotel lobby has been renovated last time on year 2006, but it is true that generally the look of the hotel might be a bit retro. Naturally it is also a matter of the taste. We are hoping to have a renovation to the hotel bathrooms very soon and since your last stay we have already renovated all the parquet floors in all the executive rooms. Naturally the curtains have been washed after the summer season and they are washed quite reguralry several times during the year.

Again, thank you for reviewing Holiday Inn Turku. We are so happy to hear that our service and recognition for IHG Rewards Club Members was adequate. You are most welcome next time to Holiday Inn Turku.
We are happy to deposit 1000 extra Rewards Club points to your account for your convenience.

Best Regards Marja Iitti, GM

The Holiday Inn, Turku is in a good spot in town, about a 10 minute level walk from the railway station, two blocks from the riverside and a few blocks to the Market square. From outside the hotel looks slightly shabby and inside the lobby is dated and cluttered with the restaurant off to the left, a few seats by the reception desk and a bar off to the right. The check in staff were lovely and very helpful although the wi fi option wasn't offered at check in and I had to ask for the complimentary 12 hour voucher later.
The rooms are set in a circular tower on 5 floors, about 50% look inward and 50% have outside views, I had an outside view although it was nothing special, a few trees and the back of the Radisson Blu opposite. The room was a bit spartan and the bathroom small although everything worked. Budget soap and shampoo dispensers on the wall and fairly thin towels but shower pressure was ok. The windows are fastened shut and the air con takes a while to react but does work eventually. There's a fridge and a kettle with a few sachets of tea and coffee, TV with a few English channels , mostly american. Wi fi is free but only on a wired connection and the house wi fi isn't detectable on the 5th floor. The beds are pretty firm and the sheets and duvet are on the budget end of the spectrum. Housekeeping was poor, the cups and the glasses were filthy on arrival and used cups were not cleaned just left.
The bar was also grubby and it didn't look like the decor had beed refreshed for a good many years, but again the staff were nice.
Breakfast was good, some hot choices and plenty of cold - but what is it with Finish hotels and scrambled eggs, do they always come out of a packet?

Family Friendly Rooms
It is a five storied medium sized hotel and so the rooms are quite small. But the family rooms on the third floor are very family friendly. Something we had not experienced anywhere earlier is that the room had a mini fridge that is not stocked. So, we as a family found it very convenient to pick up food, fruit juices and fruits from the many shops nearby and keep them for consuming later on. The availability of a tray with an electric kettle, tea/ coffee sachets was also welcome for sleepy heads.
The bath and toilet was very small but perfectly clean, bright and user friendly. The liquid hand wash, body wash and shampoo, all in dispensers, were of good quality – the brand seemed to be popular in many hotels in Finland. The reception keeps stock of complementary, short use toiletries for guests who have missed bringing theirs. The beds were comfortable, the linen soft and the pillows were great after we had released their tight packing (of the cleaning staff) inside the pillow covers.
The family rooms did not have a view of the river but from our room we could see the adjacent cross road through a leafy tree and a cemented yard. Indeed, looking out of the window at the tree early in the morning and all through the day whever we were in was very pleasant.
Other reviewers have commented on the poor quality of the breakfast. We, on the contrary found the spread and the quality to be excellent. True the eggs were not served to order, but two versions of boiled eggs – 4 and 7 minutes were available; as also soft scrambled. We particularly liked the meat balls and the small sausages. Bread spread was reasonably varied. So were the fresh fruits. I tried out the items kept for those with a sweet tooth and found the rhubarb cake to be delicious. I had it on all the four days we stayed at this hotel.
Location wise the hotel is easy walking distance to the city centre, the Aura river and the Marina area. We had an impression that the open sea would be visible down the river, where the Turku Castle is located. However, one got to see just the berthing place of the cruise ships, large parking lots, the green parks of the Castle compound and only small stretches of water. For those wishing to go beyond, they can take a boat ride – routes and fares are displayed alongside the boats beyond the last bridge downstream. At the Marina, a large ship is now offered as a restaurant to those who come in groups, with conducted trips, as well as others. Another restaurant is adjacent to the Marina Museum. There is also an old wooden sailboat for visiting (6 Euros). The hotel is in the centre of all walks that a visitor is likely to take either towards the Marina or towards the Cathedral or city centre. The railway station by walk is about 25 minutes, if one has to lug a packed suitcase. Or else, one can take a taxi, from the stand just at the entrance to the hotel and it would cost about 9 Euros.
Wifi is available in the rooms either on payment or through a 24 our voucher obtained from the reception. A laptop with free internet is placed at the lobby (Business Corner) for guests.
Other reviewers have commented about the stiffness of the staff at the reception. We, however, had a different experience. True, they were not as warm and open as one sometimes finds in small hotels, but they were quietly efficient. Smiles came more frequently to the faces of the senior ladies. The staff serving breakfast was efficient too; quickly replenishing empty food trays and preparing tables after guests had left.
Overall, we – family of three adults – had a very comfortable and pleasant stay at Holiday Inn Turku.

Good location near the market place and the stores. Friendly staff in the reception. Clean and quiet room, rather small, though. " Pillow menu": a choice of pillows with different softness. Very good breakfast, e.g. fresh bread. Parking not free but the price was decent 8 euros per 24 h. Internet is free of charge, but it is not wireless. Unfortunately I didn't have my ethernet adapter with me.
