“Gorgeous and peaceful”
Reviewed 14 September 2012

Stop by the information center and get a hiking map. Drive all the way to the end of the canyon and take a walk to the pond. The day we visited, we arrived right after a tour group emptied out of the area and it was blissfully silent except for the birds flying back and forth from their nests along the canyon clifftops. Make sure you continue to follow the walking path from the platform overlooking the pond to a viewpoint with a glorious panorama of the entire canyon. Short of climbing up the island or the canyon walls, this was the most sensational view!

“Amazingly serene”
Reviewed 9 September 2012

It took us a little while to get in as a truck was blocking the road into the canyon, but once we got there and started walking around, it was just so calm and relaxing. Another experience in Iceland causing you remember just out desolate the country is. In a good way.

“gentle charm”
Reviewed 25 August 2012

A short drive from the pleasant visitor centre is an area of woodland and flowers with a small lake. There are easy paths and good views of the rock walls. Although the events which formed the landscape were dramatic this area is attractive in a calmer way, We really liked the thickets of young trees..

“Magical geological spot”
Reviewed 26 February 2012

I first saw Asbyrgi in a video by Icelandic band Sigur Ros, and I was intrigued.... but wow, that didn't prepare me for what a great experience it turned out to be. As you drive in, the canyon walls rise up around you.... I really wished we had time to hike up to the top of those walls for what must be a great view.

Still, it was such a peaceful place. With limited time, we made an impulsive decision to check out the little pond at the deepest part of the canyon. Lucky for us: It was a peaceful, spiritual place. The canyon walls reflect down into the waters, making for interesting photos. Ducks swim around, and other birds (terns?) cry and swoop from the cliff walls.

This is a special, unique place: If you like to hike, plan for a full day and bring a picnic lunch!

Would look better from the air. You actually drive into the gorge. Maybe worth hiking the rim if you have time. Nice visitor centre. Only food is petrol station at turn off for the gorge.
