“Good value guest house”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2012

This guest house is the basement of Johana's home where she has 3 rooms that all share 1 bathroom plus a small kitchen for guests to use. You'll definitely need a car to get here and get around but once here you'll definitely enjoy it. Johana is quite friendly and helpful at pointing you places you'd never see without her help (like the public baths). The only drawback was the 1 shared bathroom for the three rooms - there was only 1 shower and it was connected to the bathroom so if someone was showering there isn't a toilet available. Given that we had 2 of the 3 rooms when we stayed there it wasn't much of an issue.

I travelled recently with my brother through Iceland and had the chance to stay at this cozy guesthouse for 1 night. Johana gave us a very warmth welcoming. She explained us about the region and recommended us nice things to do or see...We had nice talks about traveling and funny anecdotes that come with traveling.. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. There is even a kitchen and a bathroom to share with other guests. Very Good rate quality/price

I recently had the great pleasure of staying at the little guest house on the sea. I came in the depths of winter and found the warmth of hospitality enchanting. It is wonderfully located by the sea with easy access to the countryside which was great for me. The rooms are spotlessly clean with crisp fresh bed linen which coupled with the quiet led to blissful nights sleep. I travelled on my own and Johanna and her family made every effort to make me feel more than welcome. Even inviting me to share with them their wonderful traditional Christmas lunch.

I would not hesitate to recommend to any one travelling in this region to stay at the Little Guest House

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Johanna's cozy guesthouse. It was very warm and welcoming. The guesthouse would be perfect for a family needing multiple rooms with a kitchen. With all the snow, winter proved to be a magical time to visit Iceland.

Our family (we have two kids, 1 and 3) stayed at The Little Guesthouse two nights this summer. This was a great and very family/child friendly accomodation. Our room was clean and warm. A crib for our baby was put in without any extra cost. Right next to our room there was a clean and tidy little kitchen and a bathroom with shower. The house is located on a quiet street close to the beautiful ocean.
Arkanes, which is easy to get to from Reykjavik, is a cute little town. We enjoyed buying fresh baked goods from the nice bakery, having breakfast at a cafe nearby, and dinner at a cozy restaurant.
We highly recommend this affordable and nice accomodation to any family who is traveling to Iceland!

We were traveling with our three teenagers and stayed in this adorable house for 3 days. We walked into bright, naturally lit rooms with clean white bedding. The unit has 3 rooms: one with twin beds, one with a double and 2 twin beds, and a third room with a queen bed. We had the luxury of taking 2 rooms. Since my husband is tall, finding an affordable room with a large bed was so wonderful. Even though the bathroom is shared, each room has a sink and mirror, so there was really no backlog for the shower. The beds were comfortable. There is a shared kitchen so you can cook if you want. It was convenient to store things in the full size (for Europe) refrigerator for breakfast. We found it it much more relaxing not to have to go out first thing in the morning (or afternoon for the teenagers). And this arrangement is so much more relaxing then trying to fit into a small hotel room. We could sit on the front porch and look directly at the ocean. There is a bakery within walking distance, a public beach (yes! in Iceland) with a hot shower, and a really nice restaurant Galito nearby. The best part of the whole stay were the hosts. Johanna who runs the guesthouse knows everyone! and will help you with suggestions for your visit. She is connected with local artists and can help you arrange activities. We went on a horseride at a local farm where we enjoyed beautiful views from the hillside overlooking the water. And Akranes is less than an hour to Reykevik. This is a great place to stay! Would definitely do it again if we have the opportunity.

Bear with me, this review is kind of long, but the guesthouse & the hostess deserve praise of the highest kind!

My boyfriend and I planned on traveling around the entire island, but our plans were completely ruined when we woke up in Kirkjubaejarklaustur & found ourselves in the middle of the volcanic eruption of Grimsvotn! We emailed the hostess Jóhanna & she kindly changed our reservations to earlier to accommodate our changed plans.

First, let me start by saying that the guesthouse is so cute! It's cheery and warm even though the rooms are at ground level. The rooms are decorated in a charming way with artwork by local artists on the walls. We stayed in sleeping bag accommodation & it was a great deal (by far the best deal we found in Iceland). There is a little communal kitchen to prepare food in & a fridge that you can leave things in, which we took advantage of. Akranes is a nice town with a delicious bakery that smells like heaven & it is pretty close to Reykjavik and other day trips (hike Glymur, if you get a chance). It was a wonderful home base for the two of us.

The absolute BEST part of our trip was meeting the hostess Jóhanna Leópoldsdóttir! She came downstairs to chat both nights that we stayed and was very interesting and fun to talk to. She was so kind & gave us incredibly helpful advice when we had trouble canceling our reservation at a different hotel in Reykjavik. Even after we came home from Iceland, she sent us the names and contact information for a couple of people that she thought could help us sort out our issue with the other hotel.

If you are looking for a fancy, hands-off hotel with no interaction with your hosts this is not the place for you. If you are looking to meet down-to-earth Icelandic people, stay in a warm, friendly environment, and have a fun stay, this is a great place to do so. I would recommend especially to families & young couples or friends traveling together.

P.S. Jóhanna is an amazing artist & has cards available for sale. We bought a bunch depicting the local mountain, which was a really cool souvenir.
