“Hard to rate - mixed impressions”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

In some respects this is a 4-star hotel. Spotlessly clean, spacious public areas, reasonable buffet breakfast, courteous staff. The room had a good view. However, there are a couple of things with which I was less pleased. Firstly, the room design is very odd. Immediately behind the bed is a wall, behind which are the toilet and shower. The toilet is separated from the room only by a hanging translucent glass panel, so a user of the toilet is only 3 feet from someone in the bed, and the sound of bodily functions is embarrassingly clear. Because of the arrangement, there are no bed-side tables, so a shelf is fixed to the wall above the bed. This prevents leaning back whilst sitting up in bed. Higher again above the bed is a protruding bulkhead with a sharp edge and corners. We ate in the hotel restaurant on the evening of 21 September, because we were too tired to take the 5-10 minute walk down the hill to the town centre. We were the only couple in the restaurant, and the meal was mediocre but not cheap. Charge for wifi in the room is disappointing. So, you may like this hotel very much, as so many of the reviewers do, or not.

Dear Lester Z
Thank you for taking time reviewing our hotel. The design of our rooms is indeed special, However we have several types of rooms -also with a seperate bathroom. I am pleased that you enjoyed overall your stay in Akureyri and I only hope that one day you will return and stay with us again and try out a different roomtype.
Sincerely yours
Sigrún Björk

We stayed here for one night as part of a group on a bus tour. This is an Icelandair Hotel. Nice bright rooms – spacious with large sofa and large desk. We had a corner room, so had windows on two sides. Some people may have a problem with the unusual layout for the bathroom, which lacked privacy, but we didn't. Free wifi in the lobby, charge for wifi in the rooms. We had a set menu dinner & breakfast included in our package – meals were good. The fish was lovely. A short walk down the hill into the centre of town, where there are some nice shops.

We came to Akureyri for a couple of days, and this hotel was in a great location next to the local pool and very close to the charming city center area that has a couple of great shops and restaurants.

Our room was clean and well-appointed. After unpacking a bit, we were able to relax in the lobby with a happy hour beer. The buffet breakfast was nice, including fruit, skyr and a waffle bar. We had a great but unfortunately too-brief stay--Akureyri is a beautiful place!

Hotel has a nice lobby and bar. This was much nicer than the Icelandair hotel in Reykjavik. Room was very clean and comfortable. No air-conditioning but it was cold anyway as we were there in the winter. We can even see snow falling outside from our hotel window. The room and bathroom were a little bit larger compared to our hotel room in Icelandair Reykjavik Natura but they have the same "ikea" furniture type. Also, it has large glass windows that overlooks the deck/patio of the hotel. You use a real key instead of key card to get into your room. There was a free welcome drinks for us but cannot distinguish the taste so we just left the drinks on the bar counter. But no free breakfast. The hotel was located up on a hill and within walking distance to the center of the town or a small business district area. Overall, we enjoyed the stay.

I chose to stay at the Icelandair Hotel for 2 nights durning our trip to Akureyri because I thought it would was the best hotel in town. Unfortunately it was just average and ended up at the bottom of our list after staying at 3 other hotels in Iceland. The staff were just ok - they welcomed us and sent us to our room...didn't much care that it was our honeymoon. I understand that we're not the only honeymooners out there, but we were given much better treatment at more than one other place. The room is crowded but did the trick. As many others have said, the washroom(s) is the weirdest part. The sink and toilet are on one side of the bed and the shower on the other side. My husband and I laughed a couple of times about the situation a new couple might find themselves in with zero privacy in the bathroom...the door hardly even shuts all the way and the glass is just frosted so it's pretty much see through.

Another disappointing thing was that we asked a front desk person on our second day if it would be possible to see the northern lights from near the hotel and if so had they been spotted yet this fall. Much to our dismay, she said yes...last night! We had just come from another hotel that actually calls to wake guests up if they see the lights, so we assumed that it was a curtesy that other hotels would provide but unfortunately we slept right through them. The lady suggested we come down that evening to check but we didn't end up seeing any northern lights at all on our trip.

There are also several other hotels closer to down town that are easier to walk to. This hotel is within walking distance of many things for sure, it's just that you have to walk up a long steep hill to get back. We're in good shape and did several hours of hiking each day in Iceland, but during our stay there it was far enough that we chose to drive down the hill both nights to eat supper. We opted not to pay the almost $20 for breakfast and ate at a cafe in town instead but the menu did look good.

All in all, the hotel was clean, fairly comfortable, new, and the staff were pretty friendly...it just wasn't a wow experience that we found elsewhere in Iceland.

Average, rather nondescript business-style hotel in Akureyri. The lobby and my room was elegant, and the hotel is located so that the views of Eyjafjördur is beautiful. The prices are rather high, and breakfast (nothing special) was not included. Service was good and efficient. I would look for something with a greater character in Akureyri next time.

Hotel has a nice lobby and bar (it has a happy hour with reasonable prices). My family had two rooms and both were very clean and comfortable. No air-conditioning but windows open (no screens). The hotel is located within walking distance to the small downtown area that has shops and restaurants. We had dinner twice at a small family restaurant (Can't recall name but all red building) at the bottom of the hill with windows on the street. Good Icelandic dishes with a great salad bar. The walk down the steep long hill to this area is fine, but for the way back we walked to the nearby taxi building for the return trip to the hotel. The hotel said there was a free bus, but it didn't seem to work out for dinner. The hotel is very close to the airport. As a day trip, we flew to the Island of Grimsey to step on the Arctic Circle and had a blast. Lovely island and residents. One of the residents volunteered to take us around in her car. (We provided a $ tip.) We saw the church, lighthouse, and Puffins because of this kind offer. The airports on both side were easy and very accommodating. This was a great adventure. We drove from Reykjavik north around the ring road. It was an unbelievable pretty drive. The hotel oddly lost my room key while we were out for dinner. It turned back up in the morning but made us uneasy. There may be better hotels in the area for the money, but we enjoyed the stay. Because I booked through a service, my room did not come with breakfast. This was dissapointing, given the cost of the rooms.

Room Tip: Ensure breakfast comes with the room.
