“Gem of a place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 November 2013

We have just returned from Iceland and can honestly say this hotel was fantastic. The location is brilliant, just a minute from the heart of town, but down a side street and it was really quiet. The room we had was 101 and it was lovely, the bed was really comfortable and it had a real feel of luxury. The little kitchenette was perfectly adequate for breakfast which is all we wanted. I could not find any fault at all, the staff were lovely, you would not be disappointed with this hotel, it is brilliant. There are roadworks going on immediately in front of the hotel, but we didn't hear them at all once inside and they didn't affect our stay at all.

Room Tip: We had room 101, it was really lovely and quiet.

My brother and I (and our partners) took my sprightly Mum to Iceland for a four day trip to celebrate her 81st birthday. As we all wanted to be together we decided to try the 'apartment style' holiday and whilst some of the hotels looked lovely, they were central and were we warned about noise at the weekend due to the tradition of going out late and drinking a lot!
On arrival at midnight, we were dropped at the back of the hotel in a 'war zone' of unlit roadworks and potholes that we managed to navigate through, to reception. The night staff were exceedingly polite however, and helpful, and we were shown to the apartment on the ground floor opposite the back of the hotel.
It was beautifully decorated, very comfortable and clean and had everything we needed to retire to bed. It was ridiculously hot on arrival but this was soon sorted by turning off the radiators.
So far so good.
However.......at 07.00 (having arrived after midnight) we were woken by very noisy roadworks. This was a shame as it really was unpleasant. Eventually we gave in and all got up to have breakfast, which was left out for us and was very well done.
We had a great day in the town however and I agree that the hotel and apartments are fantastically well placed for visitors to the city. The town itself is very pretty and the people are absolutely lovey. I would recommend it as a tourist attraction as there is a lot to see and do.
The only downside is that due to the economy it is quite expensive.
We had a lovely meal out at a local restaurant on the first evening (Lækjarbrekka's restaurant) and then we were collected from the apartment for the northern lights tour. After we got back at 12.30pm we all retired to bed safe in the knowledge that the road works would not be on the following morning as it was the weekend.
However........at 01.30 and again at 05.30 we were all woken by two lots of folks upstairs returning from their Friday night drinking fest and crashing about on the wooden floors. Their stairs went above one room and their front door was by our bedroom window so all the shouting and jollity of five drunk people was hard to ignore. The night porter eventually came over to tell them to shut up!
We especially chose the hotel as it has good reviews about noise due to the position in the town. What a mistake!

I think there were a lot of positives about the apartments but they need to sort out several things:-
- They need better soundproofing for the floors/ceilings if they want to keep the floorboards.
-They need two loos in the three bedroom apartments (there was plenty of room in our flat for a second loo) as one bathroom is not enough.
-They need bigger cups (the cups were so small they were silly)
- They need to warn people about the state of the road works on booking (not their fault but tricky to navigate with an old person in the dark and very annoying noise)
- They need to select who sleeps where, so young party goers are not in the same block as elderly people.

The hotel was very pretty, well placed and more than just comfortable. It was relatively good value (but not cheap) however until they get all the other bits sorted out I would hesitate to go back there, which is a shame as they seem to be keen to please. I would go back to Reykjavik though as it is a lovely place.

Me and my wife have just returned to the UK following a 4 night stay in Reykjavik and we couldn't recommend the Reykjavik Residence highly enough.

First impressions from the outside were mirrored completely inside...clean, well decorated, light and welcoming exactly what you need from a base to explore this amazing county from.

Staff were true professionals...warm, friendly and couldn't do enough for us and out of all the places we have visited across Europe, up there with the very best and a credit to themselves and the hotel management.

The room itself was spacious, the breakfast just right and the facilities in which to make either a short break or longer holiday workable were right on point.

If visiting Reykjavik, this place is slap bang in the middle of the old part of town, a stones throw from the main shopping streets, harbour and tour/bus booking area it covers all the bases and much more.

Just returned from a 3 night stay at this hotel and would highly recommend it. We stayed in a standard studio apartment from Thursday to Sunday.
Positives:
- location is perfect , close to main town with lots of shops, restaurants and easy to get into route 41 if driving
- rooms were decorated really nice and were warm and cosy, the kitchenette Was small but adequate
-the breakfast is well worth getting as you get allot included so we used most of it for lunches to save money in expensive iceland
-lovely big bath big enough for two

Even better ifs: none of these are major negatives and wouldn't put me off staying again. It would enhance my experience so I hope the hotel considers them.
- there is limited car parking, on our arrival we had to park on another street and wAlk up in the rain. We were lucky enough to get the last space on the other nights but there are only 3 available spaces so not sure what the situation would be like in peAk season.
- the kitchenette is great to have but was very small and had little work surface switch made it difficult to prepare our breakfast and lunches.
- a minor point but the two cups that were provided in the room for tea/coffee were tiny-2 gulps then you have drunk your drink, would of been so much nicer to have a lovely large cup of tea or coffee after a long day exploring iceland.

The road works out the front of the hotel were only an issue in that it would of been nice to explore the street more, but they didn't not bother us at all. We never heard them once during our stay(our room was located in the top floor at the back).

Room Tip: Top floor and at the back was very quiet

Had a lovely stay here, the only room they had left was a 3 bedroom apartment which was very well laid out and extremely clean. Had a fantastic night's sleep, only complaint was the hole in the road outside - but that's not their fault!

Lovely place to stay, the nicest, most helpful people and great location right in the middle of town on a quiet road.

We could learn a lot from Icelanders and starting with this establishment it oozes hospitality.

Reykjavik Residence is in a great location.
It is a very short walk to the harbour. The main shopping and bars/ restaurant area on parallel road. The location is very quiet.

There were road works taking place whilst we stayed. This did not impact us at all. We were out all day. any pick ups for trips were just a 2 minutes walk away.

The apartment was very clean and well kept. There is a safe, ironing facilities, kitchenette area with everything you could possibly need and more. The TV has many English channels (not that we were in long enough to watch it).

We were lucky enough to be upgraded.

The breakfast tray is excellent, with enough to take packed lunches on day trips too. Freshly baked bread is delivered in the morning, orange juice and milk replaced when required.

Free wifi, free local phone calls and maid service daily.

There are staff available 24 hours a day.

A really great place stay.
