“Love this place!”

Absolutely loved this place!
I stayed during Airwaves (although didnt attend the actual festival) and it was such an awesome atmosphere. There was loads of free live music at the Hostel which was great.

The breakfasts are by far the best spread I had on my trip, and while a little expensive for a hostel, I found it worth it as I was leaving early each day.

The only thing disappointing was that our light in the dorm was out, but the beds each had their own lamp so really not that big a deal.

Staff are awesome and super helpful, cant wait to stay again!

Location is on the water near the famous 'The Sun Voyager' sculpture and a short walk into the centre of town.

This place was a real find.
Booked last minute, and managed to get a double en-suite room.

When we arrived we had actually just got engaged about an hour before - the guy at front desk was super nice and once we had checked into our room arrived with a vase of flowers and bottle of sparkling wine. What a nice touch!

The room itself was clean, tidy and furnished in a great retro style. The view was amazing - we looked out over the harbor with the ice capped mountains in the background.

The restaurant and bar downstairs had atmosphere galore - the food itself was small but perfectly formed, and breakfast was again really excellent.

I cannot recommend this place enough - thank you Kex!

All in all the hostel is a good place to stay...if you avoid the bar. The bar itself could be also really nice - but the staff is arrogant as it gets. I wouldnt recommend to go there and if I will go to Reykjavik again, which is more than possible, I would check out another place first,

Kex is a supercool hostel in the centre of Reykjavík. The design is great with old maps and bric-a-brac lining the walls. The rooms are of functional rather than cosy design, using old lockers as wardrobes and such. There are dorms or private rooms and shared bathrooms and showers. The bar has one of the best beer selections in the city, the restaurant is a total treat, and they have live music often.

The only downside is the breakfast - it's a muesli-and-fruit type cold buffet, when really after a night on the town you might want something cooked - you'll have to go out with your hangover and seek out something else. Strange that they don't open the kitchen for breakfast, it would be a hit! But still, one of Reykjavík's best spots.

This was my second time staying at Kex, the first being summer 2012.
The first time I stayed I was on the third floor rooms and I found it great. Met lots of fun people and felt safe. Washrooms were clean and the kitchen was well stocked and had lots of storage space.
This time I stayed in the the fourth floor rooms. The rooms were clean, but I didn't feel that clean in the bathrooms. The showers had poor pressure and one time just completely lost pressure all together and the water stopped coming out. Most of the bathrooms seemed out of service too.
The fourth floor kitchen was understocked in terms of supplies and did not have a working can opener. Went down to the 3rd floor to try and find one and couldn't as well. Pretty much no space to store food, and they did not clean out their fridges cause it had a vomit inducing stench of rotten dairy that seeped into your food too.

The atmosphere was still great and overall it wasn't bad, just not as impressed as I was before.
I did not try out the food served downstairs.

The only reason this is not a 2 star review is because of the bar in the lobby. The bar in the lobby is great and the food is great. There are locals and travelers that are everywhere. It was a cool spot to meet people, although the crowd was a lot younger than I would have liked. As far as facilities, most of the bathrooms were not working, and there were leaks in the ones that were. Some of the bathrooms didn't even have tables to put our stuff and were not well maintained. They were not cleaned during the duration of our stay. I liked it because of the environment, but I would not stay here again. I stayed at Hlemmur Square as well and found it much cleaner and pleasant to stay at. It was cheaper also. I got a double room at both. Hlemmur had it's own bathroom and KEX had a shared bathroom. It also was not that quiet in the morning.

Housed in a former biscuit factory, Kex is a clean, safe, fun place to stay while in Reykjavik. While most of the guests are of younger crowd, there are families and older travelers as well. I'm in my early 40's and didn't feel out of place at all.

The on-site cafe and bar serves great food and drink, with reasonable prices.

The place has a really cool feel and the building wears a rustic, vintage patina. The lobby, with mismatched old furnishings, is a comfortable place to hang out and relax. Nice music plays over a quality sound system.

I stayed in a six bed dorm room. The room was clean, but nothing special. Shared restrooms and showers are right across the hall, and the shared kitchen and a nice sitting area are close by on each floor. Access to each floor requires room key card for security.

Kex is a fun place to stay, and an easy place to meet people. I've stayed here twice, and It seems to be one of the most social hostels I have stayed in.

Double Standard - 1 double bed (of the most clever convertible design in case you get tired of being so close to your travel partner), shared bathrooms, linens and towels, and if you are lucky the same fantastic view. 3. Twin - 2 single beds, linens and towels, and a better than average chance of making your friends back home quite jealous indeed.
