“A Visual Treat”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

Every corner of this hostel is a visual treat. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the dorms were clean and sufficiently spacious. I really recommend lunch at Kex too - both the burger and the pulled pork & cabbage dish were delicious!

I went for some nights in this hostel: the building is an old cookies factory. It's very big. The bar/restaurant is beautiful and good, it's impossible stay here without drink a good pint of viking! Rooms are clean. a Little bit noise. Staff super!

Some of the staff were pleasant. Maybe these employees aren't paid and stay and eat in exchange for their terrible customer service. Wifi goes down a lot. A lot of foreigners working at the hostel who don't seem to care about the guest's experience. It's like they're 'too cool to care.' Washrooms are dirtier than a lot of public toilets I've seen and simply wiped down each morning. No duvets were provided even when paid for in additional charges. The decor and bar atmosphere is great, too bad the bar shuts down 2 hours before other bars closeby. Location is awesome, great view if your on the right side. Close to 101 area and the fresh smell of dominoes pizza greets you as you approach the front door. Good about security. Overall an affordable option in expensive Reykjavik but don't expect an overly friendly experience.

Kex hostel has everything any traveller would want. You know that they have thought it through properly when they give out free ear plugs! We were booked into a 16 bed dorm for £12 a night. Sounds expensive for such a big dorm but thats Iceland. I loved this place. Whether I am chilling with a book in the quirky seating areas or drinking a Viking beer at the lively bar; it is an ideal stay. Solo, groups and families would all feel comfortable.

Room Tip: I presume the bar gets a bit noisy if you are staying on the first floor. We were on the 2nd floor...

KEX Hostel is a great place to stay while in Reykjavik. It has all the facilities one could need and the staff is quite friendly. From the hostel, everything in Reykjavik can be reached by foot. I don't have much complaints about this place, except maybe the fact that the showers did not work very good while I was there (I saw they were getting repaired, though) and that there is no elevator (which is not handy when you have big luggage and have to climb up to the 4th floor). Despite this, I would definitely recommend KEX Hostel.

There is a good kitchen for you to prepare some meal for you. Many guests bring soup or pasta with them. You can find books in rooms and KEX has also free postcards for you.It is a very friendly atmosphere with those maps and frames around there.Prices seem high but Iceland is an expensive country and 60 dollar for a night in 4 or 6 people room is normal actually.I had a night in a 4 people room, but in Iceland you do not need to come back to your accommodation place until 2.am, sun does not go down.So crowded room is not a big problem in that case.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It' s the Icelandic word for "biscuit" and a social hostel in Reykjavik. What's not to love? Housed in an old biscuit factory in the heart of Reykjavik, KEX is just steps from all the bars, clubs, and music venues that give this city its legendary reputation. It's also a painless distance from late night munchies and a mind-boggling array of coffee houses, shops, and tourist attractions. Of course, you might not even want to venture outside of the hostel with all its features: a cafe and bar, lounge area, heated outdoor patio, tourist information desk, laundry room, and free Wi-Fi. Two guest kitchenettes and private laundry facilities are also available. And with a variety of rooms for up to 214 guests, you'll have no problem meeting interesting, new travel buddies from exotic places. KEX oozes with personality and soul-just like our guests. Every piece of decor has a story to tell. Using salvaged materials and found objects from various sources, KEX is an organic concept blending Iceland' s past with a modern, international twist. The raw industrial spaces and vintage furnishings combine to give it a homey, eclectic feel. With the affordable nightly rates, you'll still have enough cash left over to enjoy a few pints of Viking beer or sample some local delicacies like hakarl and Brennivin. In addition to our dormitory rooms we offer three different double rooms: 1. Double Plus - 1 double bed, 1 private bathroom, linens and towels, and 1 fantastic seaside view. 2. Double Standard - 1 double bed (of the most clever convertible design in case you get tired of being so close to your travel partner), shared bathrooms, linens and towels, and if you are lucky the same fantastic view. 3. Twin - 2 single beds, linens and towels, and a better than average chance of making your friends back home quite jealous indeed. LOCATION: KEX is located in the center of Reykjavik, with a view across the sea to Mt. Esja across the bay. The old factory that houses KEX is also home to The Living Art Museum and studios of various artists, dancers, and fashion designers. KEX is within an easy walking distance to the city's interesting nightlife, restaurants, shopping streets, cultural attractions, and other points of interest in the city center. To reach those places a little further afield, the hostel is well connected to the city's public bus system. ... more   less
