If you are into horses, or even if you are not, this is a worthwhile experience. Icelandic horses are a unique breed. Awesome tour leader Begga is very informative with many fascinating details about the horses, history, geology and more of Iceland. You do not need to be an experienced rider (I am not) and it feels very safe but experienced riders (as was one of our group) would enjoy this too.

We had beginner and total novice riders in our group and this was no problem at all. Begga and her staff were incredible and the horses were wonderful animals. After a really good lesson on the theory we were introduced to our horses and divided into small groups with at least two helpers per group. Pretty soon we were all tolting along in amazing volcanic pseudo craters. Pictures of the ride are included too.we had a good hour and a half riding and it was well worth the money.

This is a very special activity to do in Iceland, and you don't have to be an experienced rider to enjoy it. The guides at the stables were very careful to match guests to the right horses, and everyone in my group had a wonderful time. The horses themselves are delightful, responsive, and absolutely beautiful.

I have always wanted to ride horses, but for various reasons haven't been able to. Going to Iceland gave me the perfect excuse and we seized the day. Our tour guide was like a blonde Matt Smith who was so wonderfully geeky about horses you got all passionate and excited about them, too! We walked and even did the "tolt!" The horses are well cared for, the guides are knowledgable and patient, the tour SO close to Reykjavik, and they come and pick you up--bonus!

Our group of four took one of the afternoon rides. None of us had any real riding experience to speak of, so we were all a bit apprehensive. However, the team at Islenski Hesturinn is great at explaining the basics of riding. The brief orientation does take about an hour, but it provides sufficient background information. One should not be concerned about booking the ride even with minimal or no experience! Overall, Begga Rist, the lead guide, and her colleagues are very insightful when it comes to managing people and, needless to say, they are great at making 10-12 horses ride as a well-gelled unit. Every horse brings unique character traits and behaviors (for example, my horse made every effort to avoid puddles of water and had little patience for staying in line), but by the end of the 2 hour ride one is sure to have a new four-legged Icelandic friend. The ride takes place along a picturesque gravel trail that winds around mounds of ossified lava and green fields. Conveniently, the team provides riding boots, gloves and neon-yellow water repellent suites for all riders who are concerned about protecting integrity of their attire. The boots certainly come in handy, since some horses tend to ride right into water puddles. A few weeks after the ride, the team at Islenski Hesturinn sends a link to bunches of pictures that they took during the ride. Our pictures turned out great and brought back tons of memories, as well as a multitude of laughs. Overall, the experience offers one of the best price-value ratios - can't beat a combination of competent people and strong friendly animals! Must do activity in Reykjavik!
