“Poor housekeeping and smelly (new Block)”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2012

We were booked for five nights. The first night we ended up in the new block. The lift to our room was decrepit and filthy.Very disappointing. The room was large, however the matteress had no protective cover. The bath tub was filthy. The sink reeked nasty each time it was used. Complained about the filthy tub. Were informed later on in the day that they had cleaned it. Looked no better except the hair that was lying around in the tub was missing. At 1 am in the morning I was woken by this peculiar strong putrid smell. Rang desk and got the front desk staff to come up. He eventually admitted that the whole new block has a problem. This is after he tried to blame the smell on the furniture, then he tried to blame the curtains and oh hang on this next excuse was almost plausible - he blamed the water which has sulphur!! Asked him to move us to the other block or to a hotel of an equal standing. He could not as all the rooms were booked and all the other hotels too!! Anyway, he eventually moved us to a single room at 3 a.m. in the old block!!! The room was small, but smell free. The next morning after having had a rotten night and a firm word with the management, we were moved to the old block. This has a nice clean lift. The rooms were nicer than the new block and smell free. Suprisingly, the water had no putrid smell!!! On the downside their housekeeping skills are poor. The used towels were not removed. The floor still had debris from the previous day. The soap dish was never cleaned. The bed sheets were not changed for the duration of our stay. On the positive side, the front desk team were excellent. The hotel is located very centrally. If staying in this hotel I would insist for a room in the putrid free old block.

The Borg is in a great spot; shopping and restaurants are all very easy to walk to. The rooms are very comfortable and spacious. We had a jr suite and couldn't be happier with the layout of the room. There are black out curtains, so sleeping (in their really comfortable beds!) was easy. The hotel is very well decorated. The restaurant could use some improvement in service and food, but I guess that's another review. One reviewer said there's no concierge; that's right! You're on your own for that. The desk is courteous, but they really don't go beyond basic, basic service. All said, I would definitely stay here again.

Great hotel at a great location. The front desk service was superb. We were concerned about the hotel's location with all of the potential noise. They have done a great job with the windows and it is super quiet. The front desk staff acts as Concierges but do just as good of a job.
You can walk to almost anything in town, can cabs are a bit of a pain, so don't sucker for the better rate at the chain hotels on the outskirts.
We stayed two nights in early July.

I stayed 2 days at this Hotel directly downtown of Reykjavik. Hotel Borg is an older hotel with many decades of history. It is perfectly refurbished with a very tasteful art deco interior. I had a Deluxe room which happened to be a corner room with ample of space, large seating area, desk and 4 windows looking over the downtown area, perfect. Bath room is also equipped very well with floor heating. Beds are excellent with down comforters. The hotel has no parking space and during summer they close the street in front of the hotel. So if you arrive by car you have to park at the nearby public parking place. Everything Reykjavik is in walking distance including many restaurants or you just switch to the bar on ground floor next door and you can watch the scene at the little park in front of the hotel. Staff is very courteous, rooms are very clean. Breakfast is okay. For Iceland it is a 5 star, highly recommended.

Room Tip: I stayed at room 416 which is great

HOTEL REVIEW # 213 Borg

MY TRAVEL STYLE: If possible, I try to stay away from business hotels and strongly prefer resorts that resemble the Four Seasons, Aman, and Oberoi but try to find similar properties at lower cost. I seek out the “wow” experiences. YOU MUST LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF ICELAND HOTELS AND NONE WILL REALLY IMPRESS A VERY SEASONED TRAVELER.

LOCATION: Excellent. One a main square in the heart of town. Tons of shops and restaurants surround the hotel

BEST WAY TO GET THERE: Taxi from Int’l airport is about 45 minutes and about US$120. Domestic airport is about 10 minutes and 2000 ISK (US$16).

TYPE OF ROOM: Standard.

BED/SHEETS/PILLOW: Bed was the best we had in Iceland out of about 6 hotels. Sheets were luxurious but not as good as the hotel 101 (but the mattresses were much better). Pillows were down and excellent.

LIGHTING: Adequate in bathroom and room.

BATHROOM/SHOWER: Great shower pressure and consistent water temperature. Rain shower or hand held only. Large room for a bathroom in Iceland.

TOILETRIES: Nice but nothing too special.. probably best to bring your own.

CLEANLINESS: Room was clean but needing a detailing. Dust was noticed in many parts of the room and the filter in the ceiling in that bathroom was disgusting.

A/C: No AC in Iceland… opening a window should help but only one window opens and only a couple of inches. We were uncomfortably too hot which made sleep very difficult.

STYLE OF ROOM: Stylish room was very comfortable

COMMON AREA: None other than a small lobby with a couple of couches (not a place to hang out) and dining area.

QUIET/MORNING LIGHT: Our side of the hotel was relatively quiet… we could hear people on the street around midnight. Morning light couldn’t not be blocked 100% so be prepared to try and sleep with sunlight in the room (common in Iceland hotels in the summer for some reason).

FOOD: Didn’t eat here but enjoyed breakfast one block away at Laundromat (OK food, great atmosphere). Hotel wanted 18E for breakfast (buffet only).

TV/INTERNET: TV was a bit small but worked well. Internet worked in room with adequate speed and at no charge).

SERVICE: Front desk staff was very nice but manager failed to call back with a solution to a problem.

SUMMARY: We stayed at both the Borg and the 101 Hotel. I like the Borg better in terms of comfort and atmosphere although I usually prefer the ‘hip’ design hotels (ie 101). The 101 felt like they tried too hard and failed, was too dark, and just failed to deliver. However, our sleepless night due to not having AC, a fan, or a window that opened much at the Borg made me wish I was sleeping in any other hotel. If I was to come back, I would try booking one of the luxury apartments for rent in the B&B section of TripAdvisor. They look nice, probably are less expensive, and less expensive too.

Far and away the very best hotel my fiancee and I stayed at during our 5 days in southern Iceland. Beautiful decor, perfect location, perfect service, great room and bathroom. If you can swing the price get a room with a private balcony overlooking the park. I'm puzzled why this is ranked #9 among Reyjavik hotels - from what I read I would rank it clearly #1. We can't wait to go back and may return for our honeymoon. Kenneth Porter

Room Tip: Great rooms with private balconies overlooking park

Stayed here recently as part of a group traveling around the world on the annual travel adventure competition known as The Global Scavenger Hunt. This was a perfect place to stay...walking distance to all the city sites, good late night bars nearby, comfortable and spacious rooms, great service...and of course those extra friendly Islanders. Takk Fyrir.

Room Tip: Pass on the exotic whale meat dishes...aside from the taboo part--it is just not very good! Also, st...
