“Great Hotel and location”
Reviewed 16 August 2012

From the moment we arrived until the moment we checked out, this hotel really was wonderful. We arrived very early, around 7:30am and really did not expect to accomodated that early, but at least we wanted to stow our luggage and go out to breakfast. We were informed by the front desk man that a group has just checked out and he called housekeeping and asked them to prepare our room. He then walked us over to the dining room where we had breakfast. By the time we finished our room was ready. The room was large and very comfortable and very clean.

The location could not have been more perfect, we were in easy walking distance to everything. This is the hotel where we will stay when we return to Rekjavik. The only advice I offer to anyone staying anywhere in the center of Rekjavik is to always request a quiet room and the ambient noise of partying Icelanders can penetrate through the walls of any building!

Room Tip: Ask for a "quiet" room

Really first rate Hotel in the Centre of Reykjavik. We had a Standard Double at the front of the hotel which was beautifully furnished in the art deco style with a really great Bathroom and good facilities. The bed was very comfortable with separate duvets. The Hotel is on a beautiful square and we thought very quiet. There is a bar next door which gave us no problems, we never noticed any noise and loved sitting outside in the sun. The Staff couldn't have been more helpful and the breakfast was very good. We really enjoyed our three nights stay.

Quaint hotel in Iceland - superb location. Only downside is that the pubs outside this hotel are open all night (literally) and therefore the noise level is high. However, service is wonderful and the attached restaurant is convenient and food is good.

spent 3 nights at Hotel Borg and couldnt have asked for better location. Decor is Art Deco and actually very charming. It sits on a beautiful square, close to harbor and main shopping. Easy walking distance to all the main sites and great restaurants. Hotel Borg, while not a Four Seasons, was very comforable, very clean and staff was extremely helpful with directions and dinner reservations. There is no official "concierge" but front desk staff was more than accomodating. breakfast buffet was good. They have great black-out curtains (which we needed as it didnt get dark until 2am) and it wasnt as noisy as i expected. With our windows closed it was perfectly quiet. Would definitely stay again for the location alone.

My partner chose this hotel as a 40th birthday treat. We paid £1000 for 4 nights and I feel very cheated. We were in what I now realise is the new block. The tiny lift is directly behind theaccess door to the adjoining bar and, at one point, we had difficulty getting out due to beer kegs piled in front. The room was clean enough but tiny. The ensuite also tiny - there was an alcove beside the bath where the paint was peeling and black mould forming. They ran out of decaf coffee at breakfast after 2 days of our stay. I have an alergy to cafeine so no coffee for me! Although breakfast was nice, they also ran out of fruit after about 8.45. The hotel is in a great location and we found the staff all nice and helpful, but this hotel doesn't do what it says on the tin. I'll def be back to Reykjavik, but will def stay in another hotel.

Room Tip: Find another hotel

Arriving by car is something of an experience at the Hotel Borg, as you can't get down the street and when you find a car park nearby and walk back to the hotel you are told brightly "like all hotels in Reykjavik, we provide no parking". When I pointed out that I had stayed in several hotels with parking I simply received a smile.

We had a suite, which was a decent size, smartly furnished but poorly equipped. With large windows it was very hot inside, but with no aircon the window had to be open all night, which brought in all of the noise from the square, and the aircraft that fly close enough to satisfy even the most picky of plane spotters.

We tried to order room service, the limited menu for which only comes from the Icelandic Bar next door and gave up when the phone simply rang and rang with no answer. We went down to the Icelandic Bar and given the poor service when we were actually in the bar, the fact that the staff ignored the room service telephone made sense. If they were prepared to ignore people sat in front of them who wanted serving, they would be quite happy to ignore a ringing phone. Later we tried to get a bottle of water sent up to our room, only this time we went through reception and managed to get put through to the hotel's restaurant. Their response was that there is a 24 hour supermarket down the road.

Overall, if I am paying (as I was) over €400 a night for a room, I would expect better equipped rooms and some form of room service, rather than being informed where the local supermarket might be located.

We were booked for five nights. The first night we ended up in the new block. The lift to our room was decrepit and filthy.Very disappointing. The room was large, however the matteress had no protective cover. The bath tub was filthy. The sink reeked nasty each time it was used. Complained about the filthy tub. Were informed later on in the day that they had cleaned it. Looked no better except the hair that was lying around in the tub was missing. At 1 am in the morning I was woken by this peculiar strong putrid smell. Rang desk and got the front desk staff to come up. He eventually admitted that the whole new block has a problem. This is after he tried to blame the smell on the furniture, then he tried to blame the curtains and oh hang on this next excuse was almost plausible - he blamed the water which has sulphur!! Asked him to move us to the other block or to a hotel of an equal standing. He could not as all the rooms were booked and all the other hotels too!! Anyway, he eventually moved us to a single room at 3 a.m. in the old block!!! The room was small, but smell free. The next morning after having had a rotten night and a firm word with the management, we were moved to the old block. This has a nice clean lift. The rooms were nicer than the new block and smell free. Suprisingly, the water had no putrid smell!!! On the downside their housekeeping skills are poor. The used towels were not removed. The floor still had debris from the previous day. The soap dish was never cleaned. The bed sheets were not changed for the duration of our stay. On the positive side, the front desk team were excellent. The hotel is located very centrally. If staying in this hotel I would insist for a room in the putrid free old block.
