“Fabulous Art Deco Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 December 2012

My husband & I stayed at Hotel Borg for 3 nights in early December 2012. We arrived at about 8:00 AM, and the front desk kindly had our room available & upgraded us from a deluxe room to a junior suite (thank you!!!). Our room was on the 4th floor, and had a view of the square. The room was spacious, beautifully decorated & spotlessly clean. The bed was very comfortable, and we absolutely loved the seperate duvets. We would highly recommend Hotel Borg!

We had a four night stay for our wedding anniversary at this wonderful Art Deco designed hotel. The furniture and fittings throughout the hotel were true to the era in every respect, from door handels, lift doors, lamps and hinges. The breakfasts were buffet style with both hot and cold options. We stayed on the 3rd floor facing the square and had no problem with noise ( the bars open until 5:00 on the weekends only). The staff were excellent and very friendly, I had the impression that Icelanders are naturally helpful and are exceptionally proud of their beautiful country. We had good weather during our stay but if you feel the cold you must dress in layers. The location is very central with all good bars and restaurants within easy walking distance.

We stayed at the hotel for two nights during November, as part of hour honeymoon. We had a lovely stay. We were in a deluxe room on the 5th floor, which was very comfortable and quiet. The staff were great as well. The art deco details are lovely, and it's the perfect base to explore the city.

Our first visit to Iceland started at a great Note;
the Blue lagoon;
magnificent experience and exciting massage(you would be better off preordering your package)Rested and happy,we checked in at HOTEL Borg Downtown The capital,Reykjavik
This was Icelands first hotel,built in 1930.
2 years ago it underwent a THOURUGH redecoration and EVERYTHING ;from hinges to doors to lamps was brougth back to former glory.The funiture was remade to match exactly and it is really an unique experience.All details where impressively looked after
Also the breakfast is really good...
Forget all the modern,unpersonal chain hotels and opt for something unusal
well worth a try..

Room Tip: if possible try to get a room in the 4th floor with a veranda a city view

This is a really smart hotel, with a beautiful Art Deco design sentiment applied to the smallest detail. Upgraded to a suite (who knows why) we really felt pampered by the B&O TV and sound system and black and silver furnishings...and bathrooms kitted out by Phillips Stack!
A great location too; right in the centre of town. And that's the only problem: make sure your windows are shut or you're out til very late on Friday and Saturday nights, coz if your room faces the square you'll hear the late-night party folk outside the nearby bars til 5 in the morning. No problem; turn off the radiators so you don't need to keep the windows open :)
Lovely people, a lovely hotel and a lovely weekend.

The hotel is very conveniently located in central Reykjavik - in fact only a three minute walk to the main street where all the restaurants and shops are located. This was very handy. There was also a 24 hour supermarket around the corner where i would recommend you stock up on snacks to save some money.

The room itself was very nicely decorated - comfy beds, clean well maintained bathrooms. I understand that noise was an issue mentioned by some other guests but i didnt find this an issue. However, we were passed out with exhaustion after hectic days so perhaps we missed it! The reception staff were very accomodating as well. We didnt eat in the hotel at all so unfortunately cant comment on the food.

Cafe de Paris was located almost opposite the hotel which was very lucky as it was awesome! Really great breakfasts, brunch, dinner and so on with a really nice atmosphere. As with other places you are looking at fairly pricey meals: a MASSIVE breakfast was about £15 including tea. Dinner was about the same for one course.

Room Tip: We were at the front of the hotel but luckily didnt experience any noise, however, with Cafe de Pari...

Our biggest gripe with Hotel Borg is the breakfast. A hotel in this price range should include breakfast as standard. When not included, one would expect something better than the standard continental breakfast because of the 18€ price tag.

Secondly, we were disappointed to meet a closed door when craving a drink at 5:30 PM Saturday evening. To be fair, the restaurant opens at 6, but for those interested in a bar area nothing is offered on the premises. We were, however, guided through the corridors and let in through the back entrance of the neighboring bar, The Icelandic Bar, when inquiring where we might be able to have drink. The esthetics of The Icelandic Bar leave something to be desired, and certainly don't meet the standard suggested by hotel Borg.

Thirdly, there was no hot water to speak of in the bathroom sink.

Fourthly, although nostalgic in appearance, the locking mechanisms of the doors are just not functional in a hotel setting.

Nonetheless, Borg is certainly not without positive qualities. The location is excellent. Staff and friendly and helpful. The general esthetic appearance is consistent and doesn't disappoint.
We might go again, but would also seriously consider cheaper alternatives, as nothing much seems gained, the relatively high price considered.
