We had a pleasant stay at Hotel Holt. The rooms are of average size and standard. The staff are very friendly and helpful, we got a free upgrade for 2 of the 5 nights. The restaurant is superb, the bar lounge is very cozy. The location is within 3 minutes from the cathedral and 10 minutes on foot from the city centre. A bakery is almost next door and serves great croissants and coffee if you don't want to pay for breakfast. Everybody speaks English, German is also commonly spoken.

Dear Peter L.

Thank you for your review. I am glad you enjoyed your stay. I hope though, that nobody misunderstands that breakfast might be free at the bakery :). They certainly do good pastries and we recommend it if you are not in the mood for sitting down trying something other than pastries but there is a charge there of course.

In regards to the room size; yes, our standard rooms are not the biggest by many standards but then again, we want you to be enjoying Reykjavík and our bar etc., which you seem to have done. If anyone is planning on spending much time in the room, we always recommend a Jr.Suite or a full suite.

We look forward to welcoming you again at Hotel Holt.

Warm regards,
Snorri

Got what I considered a very low price though off-season and was pleased with the hotel. I did perhaps expect the hotel to have a more upscale feel having heard rumors about the restaurant.

Room was nice and clean, great bathroom with high water pressure (which is normal in ISL). Only real drawback was there was no internet service in the room and we had to walk over our suitcases for the 3 night stay.

Restaurant was a bit pretentious, was absolutely fine but with more penguins with a water bottle in the room than guests I tend to feel a bit on display.

Room Tip: I`ll hike on the glaciers before I dare get in that elevator, second or third!

Dear Egil S.

Thank you for your entertaining review. I enjoyed your take on things.

I would have liked to hear about the internet problems you were having during your stay. There is Wi-Fi available thoughout the hotel, free of charge to all our guests. We have started double checking nightly that all routers are functional so there should never be a problem with this. When there is, we need to hear about it to rectify it.

It is true that Hotel Holt used to be a more formal and perhaps upscale hotel but we have found that our guests are more comfortable with the simple elegance we offer nowadays. We feel we are plenty professional but we also like to connect with our guests, giving them a feeling of having met an authentic person that is not going through a checklist of things to say and do for the guests. I think our review speak for themselves in that department.

In the restaurant it is sometimes difficult to know ahead of time if there are going to be 3 tables or 30. I´ll be sure to pass on to the restaurant that they should find something else for the "penguins" to do than hover around your table when it is not so busy :).

I know the elevator is old and a bit small but believe me, it is a reliable workhorse. But there is nothing wrong with climbing a glacier or two to stay healthy. I recommend it. But it won´t get you to your room unfortunately :).

As always, we would love to see you again at Hotel Holt.
Warm regards,
Snorri

We stayed here for 5 nights in April. The hotel is a little old fashioned in the decor, with lots of dark wood in the reception area. The hotel is located about a 10 minute walk from the centre, up a slight incline.

Our room was well appointed and the bed was very comfortable. The rate didn't include breakfast, so I can't comment on how good it is, but there is a little bakery about a 2 minute walk from the hotel which was excellent!

We booked several tours via the hotel, the staff were very knowledgeable, helpful and always had a smile.

We would definitely stay here again and would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Reykjavik.

Dear LMR29.

Thank you for the kind words. We love to help our guests book tours and find things to do in and around the city. I would like to point out that the main shopping street is about 1 minute walk from the bakery so a total of 3 minutes from the hotel, not 10 minutes. Chances are you were walking in the center for a while before you noticed :).

We look forward to welcoming you next time.

We had originally booked a different hotel as we had wanted half board and they are very difficult to find in Reykjavik. Horror stories of exhorbitant food prices proved unfounded and actually, we didn't need half board, but having got it, we were then bumped by the original hotel and got put into the Holt. Tripadvisor had prepared us for the rather dark and sombre feel of the hotel and other reviews sum up this and the extensive art on show. We had room 309 at the back which was small but perfectly functional and very clean. There was no bath, but the shower was strong and they provided bathrobes which was nice. They were also quite happy for these and the towels to be taken to the Blue Lagoon, something you pay to hire if you don't take your own. Television channels were a bit limited, but they had BBC 1 and 24 hour news if you were desperate. Good free wifi in the room and throughout the hotel. The one thing that slightly let the hotel down was breakfast. There was a reasonable selection, but the cooking and waitering was done by the same person,so when they ran out of something, he couldn't do anything about it.
The highlight of the hotel was the Gallery Restaurant which was part of the building, but a separate business. Unfortunately, the hotel had not told the restaurant of the half board arrangement, so it came as a bit of a surprise to them. But once they got over the shock, they were wonderful and we were privileged to have been able to eat every evening in the best restaurant in Reykjavik within the half board price. We have put on a separate report about the Gallery and would highly recommend it.
The hotel is 5 minutes walk from the town centre, has free parking and is well positioned for the main routes out.
The hotel staff could not have been more helpful and all in all, we really enjoyed our stay there.
Overall, we had a fantastic trip and loved Iceland. Clean, friendly, terrific roads, beautiful scenery and not shackled by EU laws, everywhere was beautifully presented and very open. We hired a Polo which at £35 a day, was cheaper than taking coach tours and gave us the flexibility to do things we wouldn't have otherwise. Highly recommend Islenski Hesturinn for a memorable riding experience. Blue Lagoon, Geysir and Gulfoss were great, Perlan dome is great for lunch, did a drive to Vik and saw some gorgeous waterfalls and coast. We left desperately hoping that one day we can come back and do much much more.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are a bit small, so worth looking at a suite.

Dear Blackadda.

Thank you for your review. The miscommunication between us for the half-board was all my fault as we haven´t been receiving many of those sorts of bookings. I have now rectified the way we communicate for those instances.

In regards to breakfast, as I mention in some of my replies below, I am currently working on how we can improve there. The staffing has been a challenge as we have been much busier this year than last and therefore haven´t been able to add or train new staff as we would have liked. This can only improve.

The television selection is another thing we are working on but there are outside factors slowing that down. We have a solid 8 channel selection, which is quite good for Iceland, but a comprehensive solution for entertainment systems in Iceland is not available at the moment. We are reluctant to push improvements through in this area with more efficient solutions inevitably around the corner.

We are happy to welcome you again as soon as possible to show off our improvements.

Warm regards,
Snorri

We spent one night at the Holt Hotel, intrigued by their art collection and wanting to try the restaurant. We were a bit concerned when we arrived that the restaurant was serving a set menu that evening, but the meal was so good that I'm writing a separate review for it. The bar's worth a visit for the unusual malts (and some of the more usual ones).
The hotel's feel is quite old fashioned and sombre compared to the other Icelandic hotels in which we stayed. Take some time to wander around the hotel and look at the art collection, including some ceramic murals, huge oils, and lithographs of Iceland. I loved the sculpture at the front door (Sveinsson's museum also in Reykjavik merits a visit).
Bedroom/bathroom were ok, "cosy", with an 80s feel and furniture. Refurbishment might be an idea in the next few years...? Breakfast was distinctly average as was the service for that meal.
Great location - hotel has its own carpark, and it's a five minute walk into the centre of town.
But we will stay and dine at the Holt Hotel again next time we are in Reykjavik!

Dear DH76.

Thank you for your review and constructive criticism. As I noted in my response below, I am working hard with the restaurant to improve on some parts of the breakfast currently with the aim to have the best value in the city. Hopefully we can welcome you again soon to get your input on how we succeeded.

Since you liked the art I would like to announce that as of next week, we are starting our collaboration with the Reykjavík Art Museum. This will mean our guests get 20% off admission and their tickets will be valid for 3 days instead of 1. Those who book directly with the hotel through the homepage or phone, will get this for free as a gift from us. We are hoping this will increase the positive cultural experience of our guests in Reykjavík.

We are actually going through some cosmetic refurbishment currently. A year ago, we had nothing but 20 year old TV´s in the rooms. Now we have all flat screens. As an old family owned hotel, we will never be able to close for a couple of months and come back with a bang and a depleted bank account, but the next time you visit, I´m sure you will notice some little things here and there that add value to your stay. We´re moving slowly but surely towards this goal.

Warm regards,
Snorri

I have to echo the review by K_RocheLondon, we were actually there over Easter 2012 also and experienced rain like I had never seen (will never complain about Irish rain again!) However, we still got out and about to visit the Golden Circle etc and we did get some lovely sunny weather for the Blue Lagoon visit on our way home. But about the Hotel Holt - we got a good deal on an external website which included breakfast, our room really was quite small but it suited us perfectly. It was clean and the bed was comfortable - a proper double not 2 twins stuck together. It had two single quilts which kept falling off in the night though! The breakfast was quite adequate, the usual cold overcooked scrambled eggs, but good meats, cheeses, breads some fruit, cereal and juice. Breakfast staff were so helpful and friendly and polite. It is quite a small place so there was only ever one person serving at breakfast so it felt very personal. Front desk staff were also very helpful and rang around to check opening hours of places over Easter (a lot of places shut) and bus times (none on Good Friday except for pre-booked tours). The hotel is located very close to the centre, about 10 or 15 minutes from some good restaurants in the Old Harbour area so if you don't mind a little walk and enjoy a quieter environment at night this will suit you perfectly. It also has free parking if required and is handy to the main route out to the Golden Circle area. It was once obviously a very luxurious hotel and it's glamour is a little faded now, but this adds somewhat to it's charm - it definitely has character.

Room Tip: We were in 309 and it looked out at the back so it was very quiet but it was quiet small, it was how...

Dear Fi24.

Thank you for your insightful review. I especially like the comment about the hotel having once been a luxurious one but that having faded a bit adding to the charm. That is definitely something we are aware of and the goal is not to go to luxury again since that would mean much higher room rates but it is to maintain all areas well and preserve our charm as well as adding value to everything in the guest experience.

One of those things would be by improving on the breakfast. We are working very closely with the restaurant to improve there and each morning for the last few weeks, I have been visiting other Reykjavík hotels to compare the quality and price. We will definitely have the best value breakfast in the area before this process is done.

We look forward to welcoming you again as soon as possible to show you how we´ve improved.

Warm regards,
Snorri
