“Great location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2012

We just came back from a family vacation in Iceland. We had four rooms in the Hotel Holt for five nights. We really felt the hotel was the best option for us, close to everything, but less night time noise. The rooms had space, we had junior suites and a big suite. Certainy more space then most European hotel rooms. The bathrooms are very clean and the water is hot! The breakfast was good with meat, cheese, cereal, eggs, etc. The breakfast was included in our room rate. The breakfast attendant was very nice and made everyone feel welcome. The front staff was also wonderful, giving advice on what to see and securing reservations. We liked the eclectic art collection. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the high floors.

Spent a day here, but was pleasantly surprised and wish I had stayed longer. It didn't look like anything special on the outside - I thought it was a characterless business hotel when I booked, but it has quite a bit of charm. Art collection on the walls, a bar with overstuffed leather sofas, a library room. Seems like a place where diplomats could meet. The service staff was young and more enthusiastic than I'm accustomed to. I enjoyed walking around the hallways and sitting in the common areas. The room decor does seem a bit dated, looking just like I image it would have in the 70s, but it was well maintained and clean. I got a good sleep on the beds and can't recall any noise from inside or outside. Probably much better as a business hotel, but I got what I think was a very good deal on the room rate, so I rate it very good on value.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Holt for 5 nights earlier this month, and really had a great experience. Our overnight flight from New York arrived in Iceland around 6am and we got to the hotel around 8am. We were not expecting our room to be ready, but simply wanted to drop off our bags for the morning. The staff was very nice and generously gave us a free breakfast due to our early arrival. After enjoying the delicious breakfast, our room was ready (at 9am!!) and it really was great to be able to shower and change before exploring Reykjavik for the first day. We really appreciated the hotel staff accommodating our early arrival.

The room was very clean and the the bed comfortable. Although the hotel is very close to downtown Reykjavik, it is not on the main drag, and therefore late night noise was never an issue. Being able to walk everywhere was definitely a bonus!

I think the best part of our stay was the breakfast. There was always a lot of variety, including some typical Icelandic fare, and everything was delicious (especially the homemade bread). Everything in Iceland is quite expensive and being able to fill up in the morning before leaving for excursions was really great.

The staff was very friendly and helpful, and even assisted with booking activities. We would stay at Hotel Holt again in a heartbeat! Thank you for a great stay!

This review is long overdue since my husband and I stayed at Hotel Holt back at Easter this year. We had a great time here, and Snorri and his team were wonderful to work with.

I first spoke with Snorri and his team (before we arrived) through email, because I was concerned we wouldn't be able to find extra Paskaeggs to bring home (as I found later, I shouldn't have been concerned, they were everywhere), and he agreed to have extra Paskaeggs waiting in our room when we arrived on Easter day (and they were!). He and his staff were always pleasant in our email interactions, which was a great start to our trip as we had never been to Iceland before, and had been warned (by an Icelander, no less) that the natives could be abrupt and short at times).

We found Hotel Holt to be in a fantastic location, and though we had a few problems finding it, that was more our own problem of not translating Icelandic road signs well than anything else. The beds were beyond comfortable (as were all the beds we encountered in Iceland), and the breakfast buffet was plentiful and yummy. The staff was always ready with a smile and a suggestion for restaurants or things to do. We did find a bread roll under the bed when we arrived, which was a little odd, but the room was otherwise spotless, though on the small side.

The building itself was a little old-fashioned (the elevator was something else!) perhaps, but we found that part of its charm. The pictures and paintings throughout the building added to the ambiance.

We did not have a chance to try the restaurant since it was not open at the times we were there (closed for the Easter holiday), but have read very good things about it and will try next visit.

We were looking for a clean, comfortable place to stay that was well-located but quiet, and we found that in Hotel Holt. We will definitely consider staying there again on our next trip.

Spent two days at Hotel Holt for business meetings. Superb location but the hotel room need to be upgraded as they are old fashioned. Lobby and restaurant are nice. Breakfast are complimentary and the food was great. Staff very friendly and helpful. Overall I would prefer to stay at a more modern hotel.

Dear Runar P.

Thank you for your honest review of the hotel. Many people prefer a more modern hotel and we try our best to show all potential guests our right face online as exactly the opposite of that. We do, however, have some renovations planned for January. They won´t make us modern, but a more up-to-date classic look is what we will be going for.

We would recommend a hotel like the Centerhotel Thingholt if you are looking for a well located modern hotel in Reykjavík but I appreciate you staying with us and hope you visit Reykjavík again soon.

Warm regards,
Snorri

We arrived in Iceland at midnight and then rented a car and drove to Reykjavik. We got lost trying to find Hotel Holt (due to too many one-way streets), but a friendly local woman on bicycle led us to the Hotel's doorstep at 1:30 AM - a ten-minute journey by bicycle. Fabulous first impression of this super friendly country!

We had booked a junior suite, with more than enough space for our 13-year-old daughter plus my husband and me. The breakfast buffet was included in our room rate and it was delicious and plentiful! The location of the hotel was perfect for walking tours of the city. It was amazingly close to everything. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful. The artwork throughout the property was stunning. But this property, as noted by other reviewers and the hotel management, is aging and no longer luxurious. But it indeed felt like home, especially after long day trips. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Dear GreyhoundMama88.

Thank you for your kind words about our hotel. You are right, we are no longer regarded as a luxury hotel. When the hotel opened, luxury in Iceland was having en suite bathrooms and perhaps being able to enjoy an imported orange or two. Nowadays we are more content having a cozy atmosphere at a more reasonable price than in the past. We like to welcome all types of people and interests and keep busy all year.

I hope you will join us again in the near future and we will keep up the good work until then.
Warm regards,
Snorri

The Hotel Holt is conveniently located in the Capital 101 area of Reykjavik. We arrived on the Delta flight from the United States on a Friday morning and they had our triple room ready for us. They even ensured the pull out was made up for my son's bed so that we could rest a bit before we explored the town. Delta diverted one of our two checked bags and the team at the desk was really helpful in ensuring the bag made it to us from the Flybus delivery service that evening. Alexandra and Sandra at Hotel Holt could not have been any nicer or more helpful. Thanks to both of them for their hospitality. Our room was on the fourth floor with a balcony overlooking the Capital 101 and out to the water. It was a lovely view and great welcome to Iceland. The bathroom was very nice and linens of good quality. The location was close to all of the shopping, sites and restaurants but far enough away from the bars that we did not have any noise late at night. We did not get a chance to eat in the restaurant but there is a great bakery just 1.5 blocks down the street.

Room Tip: The triple was very roomy with plenty of outlets to charge all of our electronics. Also the balcony...

Dear kwp305.

Thank you for your great review. While we always hope our guests arrive with all their luggage and well slept, we get a kick out of making sure we do all we can to help when those things don´t happen. Sandra and Alexandra are exceptional members of our team and I will make sure to reward them especially for getting a mention by name in your review.

We look forward to welcoming you again in the near future!
