Hotel Holt was absolutely wonderful. I was nervous about staying in a small hotel but I was very impressed. This boutique hotel had so much character with unique paintings and photos throughout. The service by the front desk staff was superb. They were all very helpful and genuinely friendly. The rooms are a little small compared to North American hotels but you will not spend much time in it as there is so much to do outdoors. The breakfast buffet was really good with a full selection of hot and cold foods. I highly recommend Hotel Holt; do not refer to it as Holt Hotel in Iceland because no one will know what you are talking about.

Dear AvR825.

Thank you for the kind words. I appreciate you taking the time to share you delight. You should never be afraid to stay at a small hotel. Us small hotels have no excuse for not treating our guests like family :)

I hope to welcome you again this winter for some Northern Lights fun!
Warm regards,
Snorri

I'll admit, my first impression wasn't optimistic. We arrived at the hotel, beyond tired and exhausted, on the red-eye at 8am. It was dim and gloomy. But the smile on the front-desk girl Solrun (sorry, not sure if I spelt that correctly) turned it all around. She was genuinely sweet and so accommodating. She let us check-in early. Our room wasn't ready, but she let us have breakfast while we waited for it to be cleaned. We were in our room by 10:30am. Most other hotels would have just told us to come back at 3pm. Throughout our whole 4 day stay, we were so wow-ed by the front desk staff. Courteous, friendly, smiles. They helped us pick out excursions, restaurants and took care of all the bookings, etc.

Yes, the rooms are a bit small...charming. But more importantly, they are clean. Anyways, we hardly spent any time in the room, except to sleep. But the location was priceless! We walked to all the local attractions and restaurants.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to Reykjavik and I would stay here again if I ever get the chance!!

Travelling through town twice on the way to and back from salmon fishing. Looks like a boxy, glassy 50's /60's upper mid range hotel, nicely strolling distance to the main drag/the port. Attractive and welcoming front desk staffers with impeccable English. Decor rather gloomy and heavy though and a certain scandinavian spartan feel in the bedrooms . The sort of place where heavy-set middle aged drivers are constantly picking up and dropping off passengers in their Mercedes e classes... Breakfast is rather basic but icelandic friends recommend the restaurant for dinner - i'd rather wander out to sample icelands exploding gastro scene- smoked puffin and minke whale anyone? Overall i would recommend it because of the great staff, the facility itself could do with a facelift, like the drivers waiting by their Mercs..

Room Tip: top floor -4th i think, rooms have terraces with great views.

Dear Mark H.

Thank you for your review. You paint quite a picture. We are old fashioned and proud of it. The facelift is underway and we would love your input on how best to achieve it to move away from the "spartan" tag. In regards to the drivers, I am not sure what you mean. There are two taxi companies in Reykjavík and we do not control what sort of vehicles or drivers come by unless we are booking far ahead of time.

Hopefully, you will return next year on your fishing trip and we will have a new look room for you and keep doing the other good things we are doing. Won´t promise anything about a Bentley in front though ;)

Warm regards,
Snorri

This hotel is only a few blocks from the main shopping and dining street, and is quiet compared to the ones on that road. The dining room is excellent and the art work is the largest collection of original Icelandic art in the word. The only reason I don't rate it Excellent overall is that the rooms tend to be smaller than I like for the money spent. It is very clean and the service is great. 5 minutes to the Airport and less than that to most everywhere in town.

Room Tip: Ask for a larger room if available.

Dear Bill S.

Thank you for the kind words. We try to overwrite the smallness of the standard rooms with our service and having our guests join us for a drink at the bar etc. We certainly cannot do anything to make the rooms bigger but that is a fair assessment. Our standard rooms do not have any dead space :).

We hope to see you again at Hotel Holt and would like to invite you to a Superior room with a little more leg room.

Warm regards,
Snorri

Staying at Hotel Holt provided a very special opportunity of experiencing a remarkable, uniquely Icelandic and charming well located place in Reykjavik not matched elsewhere.
The booking and reception service was very professional and helpful. It was hard not to get lost in the variety of Icelandic experiences and historical moments by being surrounded by the most amazing amount of art which adorns all of the walls of the Hotel especially in the lobby, bar, dining room and the corridors.

Having a pre-dinner drink in the lobby bar was a special Icelandic moment to share with very friendly bar staff, especially in order to be able to experience one of the most superb whisky collections.

Our room was very comfortable and quaint, if not a little compact, but there are a range of bigger options available depending on your requirements. The breakfast involved a very generous variety of delicious options including a range of local delicacies and was worth the small additional cost.

Most importantly, Hotel Holt is a place which will provide unique and everlasting iconic Icelandic memories which keep speaking to you in a different Icelandic voice after returning home.

My husband and I stayed at the Holt Hotel in Reykavik. The Hotel was very clean with the staff extremely helpful and friendly. We would definitely stay there again and would recommend it to anyone visiting Reyjkavik.

This hotel was our last stop after travelling around Iceland for 2 weeks - we wanted a bit of luxury.
Excellent customer service, they upgraded us to a junior suite without a surcharge after inquiring about a larger room.
The interior of the lobby is a bit dated - lots of dark wood, frosted glass so no real light which I found a bit depressing. Beautiful artwork throughout. The rooms were fine, again, a bit dated in decor. Dark wood, bland colour carpeting - a bit 90s. Not as luxurious as one would expect with these prices. May be time for a facelift.
The room faced the street and we were able to hear early morning traffic and noisy guests leaving the hotel. I suggest a room on the other side.
Location is good - I recommend a lovely cafe nearby called C is for cookie. Wonderful coffee and cakes.

Room Tip: Choose a room not facing the street

Dear Londontravelller.

Thank you for the review. Location, location, location. Three reviews in a row with location in the title. They do say that is vital to a hotel :).

In regards to a facelift. We are slowly moving in that directions. New carpets, tv´s and more have been set up in 30% of our rooms and without breaking the bank and rolling the costs on our guests, we will finish in the next 18 months, before our 50th Anniversary. Hopefully you can join us then and enjoy a fresher but still classic hotel.

Warm regards,
Snorri
