32 Tungata
Reviewed 9 July 2012

Was travelling back to USA from UK and went via Iceland. Hotels were expensive and the cheaper ones were too far out. I came upon this little gem. A small 1 bedroom apt with a living/dining room/kitchen. And only 2 mins walk down town. Happens to be on the same street as a number of Embassies, notably, the French, Canadian, Russian and Finnish. Is actually next door to the Finnish embassy. With eating out expensive, having the ability to make breakfast, etc, saved on the expenses. Is really only good for 2 people as it does look like the place is a converted garage, but as I said at basically half the cost of other places in the area, it is a great bargain.

32 Tungata was a lovely apartment next to the Finnish embassy in Reykjavik. Owner Jon was very nice and let us in even though we arrived before the appointed time of 2 pm. For our 4 days in Reykjavik we used this apartment as if it were our home, and the bright living room and well-appointed kitchen were inviting and a great value for the price we paid. Tungata is a 5 minute walk from Reykjavik's small downtown area. We never got to meet the upstairs neighbors, Jon's family, but really enjoyed the apartment and hope to stay there again when next in Iceland.

We are a couple with a teenager who recently spent 4 days in Iceland --and were really sorry to leave so soon, also due to how comfortable and convenient and affordable we found the 2-bedroom apartment at 32 Tungata--an ideal accommodation for all our needs. We were very glad for the well-appointed kitchen (complete with spices and condiments and more--we really stretched our travel money by cooking & eating in) and also the cozy living room, besides the two bedrooms with comfy beds and closet units for storage (which we've missed in some guest house accommodations elsewhere). The traditional European apartment layout and mostly bare wooden floors seemed both "quaint" and practical. We also loved the location near in a quiet and mostly residential neighborhood just a short walk to the old harbor and to downtown Reykjavik and also to one of the city's inexpensive public swimming pool-spas. The square tower of the nearby Catholic church made for an excellent landmark to guide us "home" as we ventured about town. The owner, Jon, sent us information in advance about nearby grocery stores and other details, and we easily arranged tour bus pickup at the door even though the small guesthouse doesn't appear on standard lists for that service (e.g., for Golden Circle Tours from various companies). We wished only that we had access to a local (coin?) phone in the apartment or nearby, as we wanted to make a couple of local calls but had no means to do so. Still, we could email Jon while staying at 32 Tungata (the strong signal wireless access is a major amenity) and others and got some answers that way. When other travelers we spoke to on day-long tours who were staying in hotels heard about it, even without our mentioning what a good rate we were paying, they were envious--and rightly so!

32 Tungata has more than one apartment for guests. I stayed in the "garden" apartment which has one double bedroom, and is separate from the main house.

The furnishings are basic but comfortable, and free wifi is included. On-street parking is easy and also free, so the apartment makes an excellent base for those exploring into Iceland with their own car. There are supermarkets nearby or you can walk five minutes into Reykjavik city centre for any meal of the day. The location is a suburban neighbourhood, very quiet, and very handy for the main roads in/out of Reykjavik.

If you're a light sleeper, consider bringing an eye-mask because it gets light very early in the apartment, even with a blackout curtain in the bedroom.

Other than that, I have nothing to complain about and would recommend this apartment to the independent traveller.

We stayed in the two person apartment. It was very nice and very close to the city center - just a couple minute walk up a small hill. The apartment is located next door to the Ambassador to Finland and just a short walk to the Consulate and other embassies.

As other reviewers mentioned, there is not a curtain in the kitchen, which is at ground level. However, there was never anyone around to pose a problem peering in.

The apartment has a full bathroom, a bedroom with wardrobe, sitting area, and small kitchen. Very clean.

The location is very good, near embassy area, 10 mins from the city center, no need to take bus or taxi. We lived in the 2 ppl garden flat with no noise at all, Ikea furniture and very clean. The only one small thing is that there is no curtain in the kitchen. Jon, the owner, is very kind, although he didnt show up during our stay, we always communicate with him through email. The equipped kitchen helps us save lots of money as the spending level in Reykjavik is relatively expensive than that in London!

We stayed in 4 different accomodations in Reykjavik as we took several excursions from the city. This was without doubt the best cost-quality one. An appartment set up in a former garage but extremely cozy, well-equipped, private, spacious and quiet. Five minutes away on foot from the center. And 30% cheapter than any other comparable place in the city. I would live there happily for longer periods. Owner very helpful.
