We stayed at Athena Guesthouse our first night in Reykjavik, our first night in Iceland, in May, 2014. Egill, our host, gave us a very warm welcome, and went out of his way to be helpful to us. His English was excellent. We were happy, and fortunate to be able to have an early check in as our flight had arrived just after 6 in the morning and we were exhausted.
The guesthouse occupies the main floor of a two story building and is well situated in a quiet residential neighborhood, about a 15 minute walk to the lively center of Reykjavik, and within walking distance of many sights a tourist would like to see. A small but well stocked grocery store is a few minutes walk away. The guesthouse is immaculate, clean and spotless, and each small bedroom simply furnished, including black out blinds which we appreciated as in May, I don't think it gets dark in Iceland. The fridge in the shared kitchen was full of food for a self serve breakfast, with a wide variety of choices, including fresh fruit, skyr, eggs, cereal, bread, coffee, and tea, including herbal teas. Wifi is available and is included.
So we were happy with our choice of Athena. Prior to our arrival, Egill had responded promptly to emails. As a host, he is a most engaging and hospitable person who not only oriented us to his city, but also in conversation shared information about Iceland we wouldn't have otherwise learned. Egill deserves more than five stars on the service rating! Staying at Athena turned out to be a great way to begin our 12 day trip around the country.
