“All you need.”
Reviewed 3 November 2012

On arriving at the hotel at 1am, all I could really see was the abandoned and disused land right next to the hotel that frankly looks like a scene from a disaster movie but don't be afraid, on further inspection the next day you realise the hotel is actually in a decent area just 10-15mins walk to the main area of town and the walk you take is along the main road full of Reykjaviks best shops and bars. The hotel itself is really good. I found the rooms to be clean, comfortable and well equiped with everything you would need. The hotel staff were freindly and helpful, booking us excursions and making recommendations. The only issue I had was with the lack of double duvet. I am willing to accept two single beds pushed together to make a double, as is standard in hotels, but I expect a double duvet to be provided for a couple. I did ask the reception if this was psossible but this seemed like a very crazy idea to them so I just accepted that it was not going to happen. Two single duvets don't exaclty scream a romantic weekend is all. Overall, i would recommend someone to stay here because it was an enjoyable experience and is just what you need on a short trip to Reykjavik.

We've just returned from six nights staying at Klettur and we are not regretting the experience one little bit. We had a deluxe room with a fantastic view over Reykjavik harbour and the surrounding snow-capped mountains. The room was minimalist but had great facilities, such as cosy and cwtchy duvets tea and coffee, a safe, a lush power shower, an ironing board, a hair dryer and - very conveniently - a small fridge.

There has been a hot debate about the length of the walk from this hotel to the central hub of the town. We call it a 'town' because it is only a wee place that has a very compact centre. It will take you twelve minutes to walk from Klettur into the beating heart of Reykjavik; if you can't manage a twelve-minute walk then you really shouldn't be visiting the famously rugged country of Iceland in the first place. Besides, there is a selection of shops, supermarkets and little gems of restaurants all tucked up in the quiet, neighbouring streets.

The staff (all apart from a couple) are incredibly helpful, knowledgable and friendly. Most of them have first-class customer skills and will do all they can to help, including booking trips, recommending restaurants and just generally making your stay a positive one. Unfortunatley, the hotel bar closes at 10.00pm every night, probably because the regular bartender has all the social skills of a mummified corpse. Don't expect the Klettur drinking hole to be anything special; it's expensive, virtually deserted and the only time you will know that it is stoptap is when you turn around to find the shelves cleared, the lights off and the barman marching past you with his coat on and the till in hand.

But the bar turns into the breakfast room in the mornings at the sensible times of 7am to 10am. Don't go expected a daily English greasy special - the breakfast is continental style. Every morning you can expect a plethora of the obligatory cold meats, bizarre combinations of vegetables, juicy fresh fruit, a sinister-looking bowl of pickled fish, incredibly moreish pastries, and enough toast to fill the volcano that erupted two years ago. Also, the selection of hot drinks was ever so welcome before braving the Arctic winds outisde.

All in all, we had very comfortable six nights at the Klettur and we would recommend it to anyone in Reykjavik for a short stay.

Room Tip: Top floor, at the rear, for a good view.

The two of us stayed here on an Icelandair northern lights break in October 2012. The hotel is very close to the Hlemmer bus station which means you can get buses to pretty much everywhere. We had room 210 which meant that we could actually pick up the wifi without going to the lobby or bar. (You have to create a username and password to access the wifi).
Having stayed at the Hotel Cabin twice, I'd say this was slightly better as it is closer to the town centre and the rooms were bigger. Breakfast was good, cereals, toast, selection of cold meats, cheeses, eggs, salad and fruit. Orange juice was delicious. Bar area was nice with happy hour 6-8, 2 draft beers for 1000 krona (extended to 10 if northern lights tour was cancelled). Room was a reasonable size, although we were on the ground floor directly onto the street which might be a problem if you are a light sleeper. Soap, shampoo and conditioner provided good size shower with lashings of hot water. Hotel staff were very helpful and provided a light breakfast for us at 4am for our early flight. It's about 15 minutes to the shopping street and about 800 krona for a taxi back from the centre. The hotel can organise your trips for you.

Hotel is simple and clean - good breakfast buffet to fill you up for the morning. Excellent base from which to get picked up/drive from for excursions. Quick walk to the seafront promenade, around a 25 minute walk into central town - not something you'd want to do in the cold or dark, but great in summer.

Friendly staff and comfortable rooms. Not luxurious or anything but simple - but most things in Iceland are like that, part of it's charm.

Make sure you get the bus from the airport not a taxi - the bus stops at the hotel and costs a fraction of the price!

Definitely go on the Golden Circle tour and to the blue lagoon and - if it is open - inside the volcano!

Centrally placed with simple but spacious bedrooms. All amenities available in rooms. Good breakfast selection. Trip booking and information available at reception by friendly staff. Rooms at the back look over the sea in the distance but a bit of a building site at the back.

Room Tip: This hotel has no restaurant but does serve a good breakfast. Several restaurants avaiable within w...

We've just got back from a long weekend and stayed in this hotel. The room was basic but warm and clean with a lovely shower. The breakfast was fine - nothing flashy but sufficient. We had a very early start on our way back to the airport (5.30am bus) and were delighted to be told that there'd be coffee and toast for us to help ourselves to from 4.30 am! Even better - the cereal, cheese, ham and variety of bread and jams had been laid out. The staff in the hotel were very helpful too. The fridge in our room was very useful - there is a decent supermarket about 5 minutes away and with that and the beers and wine we bought on arrival at the airport it made life easier when planning for the trailing out on two evenings in search of the northern lights....
Have read revues of the hotel with people saying it was 25 minutes walk away from the town, but we found that we were in the middle of things within 10 minutes (and we're not marathon runners).
Would definitely stay here again - had a great time despite not seeing those elusive lights.....

Stopped here for a couple of nights on an Iceland Air Northern Lights Tour. The hotel is just outside the centre of town, but only a 10 minute walk (Reykjavik is tiny).

The place is very clean but a little spartan in it's decoration. having also been to Oslo and Malmo, this seems the norm for Scandanavian hotels. Our room was a little strange in that there was a structural pillar right in the middle of it, which blocked the view of the TV when you were lying in bed. Sleep quality was poor as it was just too warm and turning the room stat right down seemed to have no effect.

Breakfast was pleantiful but plain. The usual Scandanavian cheese, processed meat, salad and fish in brine. There were also cereals and bread, but it didn't make great toast. Reception was manned 24/7 by pleasent staff and the evening bar was as expected expensive and soulless.

OK for a couple of nights, but I couldn't help thinking that there might be better hotels in town. Probably wouldn't stop here again but had no choice on this occasion as it came as part of the package.

Room Tip: Check if your room has a pillar.
