“Grand hotel, very modern excellent service & truly Grand”
Reviewed 30 August 2009

The Grand hotel newly extended in 2007/8 very good rooms, excellent service, lifts to rooms. Food in adjoining restaurant extremely good if not a bit expensive, bar food available very good choice but with so many places to eat out in Reykjavik lots of choice.
Breakfast includes about everything for all tastes. 20 minute walk to down town Reykjavik or 1500 Kr taxi ride.

Very poorly managed, too hot, no air conditioning nor window opening apart from a small part, small rooms, wet shower, broken bath shower, very bad breakfast. And look at what you pay!

We booked Grand Hotel in Reykjavik through Bookinhotels. I must admit that I was a little bit wooried due to the low price and some reviews on the net.
What we got was a very nice, light and modern room with good space and a nice bathroom. A good breakfast buffet was included in the price. The hotel is half an hours walk from the city center but the hotel offers free shuttle service three times a day. The reception staff was very helpful and it was easy to book day trips with pick up service.
All in all we were very pleased and think we got much value for our money.

We stayed here for three nights as part of a Globus tour in June 2009.

This hotel is located slightly out of the city center. It is about a 10-15 minute walk to the city center from the hotel.

The lobby area is huge with a bar and many seats. The hotel is large with lots of elevators that are fast.

Our room and bathroom were of average size and overlooked the front of the hotel and the bay. We had a queen bed. There was a separate tub and shower. The shower was in the corner behind the door with a glass partisan that swung out , however, since the shower shared the bathroom floor, water got everywhere when we used it. There was a heated towel rack as well as a heated floor in the bathroom. There was a hair dryer in the bathroom.

Breakfast was a small buffet with hot and cold choices.

There was a pizza hut and a few other restaurants within a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel.

There are three computers with free internet access in the lobby. There is also free wireless if you ask for the login and password at the best

The airport was about a 45 minute drive on our tour bus.

I accompanied my husband to an international conference being held at the Grand Hotel Reykjavik. We stayed at the hotel during our week-long trip. The hotel itself is amazing. The lobby is incredibly fresh and modern, with trendy red couches, a beautiful water feature, and free wireless internet. Possibly due to the conference we were attending, the couches were often filled with business travelers working with their laptops.

We stayed in a corner room, which was nice and spacious. Upon entering the room, we did have a few moments of difficulty turning the lights on, only to discover that all electricity was cut from the room until a room key was inserted into an electronic slot near the door. The room was quite sunny due to the large windows. Smaller transom windows up above could be opened using an electronic switch, which was useful after a hot shower.

The bathroom was clean, however, the shower itself was poorly designed. Situated in a corner opposite the toilet, the only thing dividing it from the rest of the room was a clear pane of glass hinged to the wall. When showering, the water typically spread well beyond the intended shower area across most of the bathroom floor. Nothing closed off the shower from the toilet it was facing, so water sprayed in that direction as well, causing the roll of toilet paper on the wall to become soaked. We managed to work around these things, but it was clear that trendiness overruled practicality.

I was alone for a portion of the first few days while my husband attended meetings, and there wasn't much to do. The hotel is far from downtown and the area had a more suburban feel to it. There was a nice outdoor sculpture garden next door (part of the Asmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum) that was easy to walk to, but due to the unseasonably cold weather during those days, I didn't venture much further. The hotel does offer a shuttle back and forth from downtown a few times a day, but the last scheduled trip is in the middle of the day, meaning you are on your own for transportation the remainder of the evening.

One thing I would have liked to see in in the hotel was a gift shop. There was a well-stocked mini-bar in our room (at the usual outrageous prices), but there wasn't a place to purchase batteries, toiletries, or small souvenirs. The closest thing to it was a single rack of postcards at the check-in counter. There were several times when I would have like to purchase a bottle of water before leaving for the day, but nothing was available.

Overall, though, the hotel was wonderful. If you are looking for a quiet, clean, updated place to stay while visiting Reykjavik, this is it.

We stayed in the grand hotel for 4 nights in October 2008. The hotel is absolutely amazing.

The lobby when you walk in is so impressive, really very modern and immaculate. There are 3 lifts, so you're never left waiting. Our room was quite high up, on the 12th floor maybe. The window was huge and we got a lovely view of the sea and over Reykjavik. However, if you don't have a sea view, you get a mountain view which is even more impressive.

The bathroom was huge and had a seperate shower and bath and was very clean. The maids came in every day and sorted the room out.

Service in the hotel was brilliant and the staff friendly.

The buffet breakfast was plentiful and enough to fill you for a day out experiencing the wonders of Iceland. There is a cooked breakfast as well as continental and plenty of choice of drinks.

The only slight downside of the hotel was the location. It is on the outskirts of Reykjavik. It is within walking distance, but wouldn't be much fun if the weather was bad. We got a taxi back to the hotel one night and it was quite expensive,

All in all, would definitely recommend to stay here, we loved it.
