I was travelling from London en route to New York and decided to lay-over in Reykjavik for a couple of days. I had never been there before and had no idea where to stay. All of the hotel reviews that I saw gave the qualifier that they could be noisy at night because they were right in the heart of the city where all the bars and clubs were. While I hoped to have a chance to see some of the nightlife, I also wanted to be able to have peace and quiet. The Embassy Luxury Apartments promised that they were close to everything, yet, peaceful, and they were certainly correct. I strongly recommend staying there.

The Castle House Apartments and the Embassy Apartments are the same organization, but at different locations. I was booked into apartment 101 at the Embassy Apartments. The apartment was big - bedroom with double bed, living room, kitchen, bathroom - very clean, functional, quiet - in fact, quite beautiful - with everything you could want. It is located in a very quiet street, yet about two minutes walk from the city center. You simply can't beat the location.

Be aware that this is not a hotel. If you want room service, a restaurant, bars and all the things you'd find in a hotel, then this is not the place for you. However, if you want to find a place that is gorgeous, reasonably priced, easy to get to and where you can come and go exactly as you please, then you should not look any further. To my mind, there is no reason to stay anywhere else. I strongly recommend the Embassy Apartments and would definitely stay there again.

A couple of things to note: if your flight gets in late to Keflavik, the currency exchange places will be closed. So, change money in advance. If you don't - as I didn't - you'll have to get cash from the airport ATM and incur whatever fees that involves. You can take the Flybus from the airport to the Hotel Reyjavik Centrum. That is just two or three minutes walk from the Embassy Apartments. That's what I did and it worked out perfectly. Failing that, the Embassy Apartments will organize a car for you, but that costs about 64 euros. It's OK if you're splitting with somebody, but solo it's a little expensive. Even so, that is a nice convenience, if you choose.

In summary, I had a great time in Reykjavik and I heartily recommend the Embassy Apartments. Don't bother looking elsewhere.

My sister and I took an extended weekend to Reykjavik in early March after finding a great flight from Boston. Castle house was a crazy deal for the space we had - big sitting room, kitchen, one bedroom, and small-ish bathroom. After being scared off by threats of high food prices, we bought a lot of groceries and ate-in for most breakfast and lunch meals, so the kitchen equipment provided was a great benefit. The location of Castle House is great - a 10-minute walk to the downtown area and water, and right on the beautiful lake.

Maybe it was the poor economy, but even after going out for dinner, we realized it wasn't all that expensive - about $40-50 for the two of us. Favorite meals include: Cafe Geysir, Burger Joint (totally authentic - an Icelandic interpretation of Americana), and Icelandic Fish & Chips.

We did two tours with Go Travel Iceland, one of the Golden Circle and one of the South Shore. Of course we rounded out the trip with some shopping (66 Below fleeces, anyone?) and the Blue Lagoon on the way out. A really cool place to go.

From the time of booking we had a great experience with the team from the Castle House Apartments. Emails regarding our late night arrival and retrieving the apartment key after hours were answered courteously and quickly, and we were given extra recommendations about things to do and see.

We stayed in apartment 62, which I have noted that other reviews say is "small"... but there is more than enough room in the apartment for two people to quite happily reside. The kitchenette is basic, but complete and the bathroom has a shower with consistently hot water. The cleaner came in every day to make the bed, etc.

Location-wise, the apartments are only a few blocks from the city centre for restaurants and shopping, and a quick walk also to the National Museum and Hallgrímskirkja church. The major tour operators will also use the apartments as a pick-up location if you book a day-trip.

They have overstated the word luxury for these apartments, but they are clean, well equiped, and in a fabulous location.

We had a studio apartment. It was very small, but had all the amenities one needs for a week in a strange town. The kitchen had a four burner stove, a college dorm sized refrigerator, and a microwave. The pots and pans and tools were adequate. The bath room was small, but had all the stuff you need to keep clean.

The best 2 things about this place are the location and the price. You are 3 blocks from the center of the city and the apartment costs one third of a hotel room. Add in the fact you can cook your own meals, and you can really save some money staying here.

My wife usually have breakfast and supper in the room and lunch wherever we may be. It really does keep the budget tight. If you want to eat in Reykjavik, you are no more than 8 blocks from all of the downtown restaurants and pubs. In fact, just up the hill from the apartment, passed the American and British embassies, there is a fabulous Icelandic food retaurant. Try the horse meat tenderloin! Wow! The guillemot breast is only for those who like game meats.

We would definitely stay here again if we revisit Reykjavik.

Communication with Castle House Apartments from beginning to end was fantastic, we were picked up straight from the airport and dropped off at the door of our apartment by their driver,. for us this was the quickest and easiest way to get to the apartments. The trip from the airport took approximately 45 minutes and the cost for their driver was very reasonable even when compared to the Flybus. We took the flybus from the bus terminal (about a 15 minute walk) on the way home.

We were slightly aprehensive about the apartment when we booked as the pictures showed the apartment to be very small, but for the price we paid we were willing to make this sacrifice as we figured we wouldn't be in the apartment much anyway. On arrival we went through the ground level courtyard and were pleasantly surprised, we stayed in apartment 62, the apartment was small but nothing to worry about, you could easily walk around the bed and had enough room everywhere else for a 3 night stay. The apartment was very well equipped with a tv, dvd player, microwave, fridge, cooker, iron, hair dryer - the list goes on really!

The location was what sold us on this apartment to start with and we were not disappointed, we were just far enough out of the hustle and bustle of the clubs and bars but we could still walk to downtown Reykjavik within 5 minutes. Take away pizza around the corner, restaurants 5 minutes away, perfect! We were concerned to start with as planes were flying pretty low over the apartments in the day but they stopped completely at night.

Most of the tour operators pick up from the Castle House Apartments which is handy and we never had any problems.

So all in all the perfect accommodation , not high end luxury, but a definate home from home. We would definately return again and again and again!
