After having read some of the reviews, we were a little concerned when our travel company booked us in to the Saga. However, as seasoned travellers, we knew what to look for.
When we arrived, all looked OK. The room was clean and spacious and staff appeared friendly and professional. Food is always the problem, as my wife is a Coeliac, but the local society representative assured us that gluten free food would be no problem in Iceland. I suppose that we should have asked more questions, because it was difficult for us to communicate our problem. As the hotel bar sold only burgers and things in breadcrumbs, we ended up buying foodstuffs from a local garage shop to tide us over for our first night.
The following morning, a more than ample buffet breakfast set us up for the day. What was not explained to us was that the hotel served a buffet dinner each evening that was made up of hot or cold food and by this time, we were well on talking terms with the chef. However, it was not discovered until a day or so later that having only hot or cold meals without mixing them cost only half of the price. So things worked out cheaper as food was expensive. This was a common practice in the city.
We had a number of excursions pre-booked and the hotel reception was more than pleased to ensure that bus pick-ups were not missed by making telephone calls to each tour company and confirming our arrival. In some cases we made visits to the tour office to exchange our vouchers for tickets. As the hotel is only 15 minutes walk from Reykjavik city centre, this was not a chore. The hotel has its own tour office and most excursions can be booked there and it was here that we booked our most exciting and enjoyable tour for our last full day in Iceland. A SuperJeep tour of waterfalls, viewpoints and volcanoes left us with memories of breathtaking scenery and ensured that we slept soundly that night.
Sleeping soundly was the order of the day, as we had to rise at 4 am for a 5 o'clock pick-up and, once again, the hotel confirmed the transfer booking for us.
In short, the hotel was more than satisfactory, comfortable and friendly, though the bath towels were small. Do not be frightened to ask questions as most of the staff speak really good English. Find a room on the fifth floor or higher to provide excellent views and keep you well above any noise from functions. Ours, 523, provided us with superb sunrises over the city and views of the snow-capped mountains.
Finally, if you wish to catch the Northern Lights in winter, book early in your holiday because, if they don't appear, your ticket will allow a repeat trip before you leave providing you have the stamina to do it
