“Good location, indifferent service and things don't work”
Reviewed 9 August 2012

Most Icelanders are a really nice bunch of people that are very happy to look after you. In this hotel they really don't seem to give too much of a toss, they are polite enough but that's all. Apart from the blond girl with glasse who met us on the first night.
The wifi cost 2,000 kroner -about £11- for 24 hours and is unreliable. The Tv is okay but the Brit channels cannot always be received.

If you want some comfort and a TV make sure you get a de luxe room, if you want a proper double bed and not 2 singles pushed together then go for a superior room. Do not stay in a basic room unless you are skint or desperate.

It's a good location but has little else to recommend it; it seems to get a very high turnover of coach party people and this may be at the root of the staff indifference

Just returned from Iceland 2012.Hotel very good reception staff very helpful and polite.Small rooms but we coped perfectly fine, you could also pay for a bigger room but your not going to Iceland just to stay in the hotel.Would of given the hotel five stars if it didn't have such thin walls in the rooms and other guests just letting there doors slam shut as this makes the sleep quality poor. cleanliness of the room could of been better, outside hotel its about 20mins walk into city along the coastal path ,would recommend iceland excursions as they where very helpful and coaches always on time to pick you up from the hotel ,we booked with Iceland travel to go horse riding but they did not arive to pick us up with no explanation all in all very good experience with Cabin hotel would recomend this hotel and Iceland excursions

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the sea

If you're agoraphobic or Harry Potter, then you will feel right at home in the closet sized rooms at the Cabin Hotel.

The hotel is situated along the water and a way out of the main areas of the city, so if you don't have a hire car you will find it inconvenient.

Breakfast is your traditional European style with lots of complex carbohydrates, cheeses, eggs, tomatoes etc and some fruit and yoghurt. There is a strict policy on not taking any extra food for later and you will, according to the sign, be charged additional fees and put on a ship to Australia with the rest of the convicts if caught stealing bread (I'm Australian so I can say that).

Most importantly the room is a shoe box, I estimate it to be no more than 1 1/2 to 2 metres wide with a bed jammed on each side of the room. The smart interior design people have tried to trick you by putting a mirror on the wall, but when you try and fit two suitcases anywhere in the room you'll quickly realise just how small it is.

I thought the shower was good, small but had good water pressure and no flooding issues. Enough room in there to do all the things you need to do.

I would recommend bringing one of those airplane eye mask things to help you sleep because they've only given you 45cm worth of curtain for a 1 metre wide window and the sun doesn't really set in Summer.

All in all, if you need an affordable option and a place just to sleep and shower while you adventure all day then this place will be fine for one night... two at the very most. But I'd lay off the doughnuts now in preparation and possibly invest in a sweat suit, because you need to be streamline to get in and out of your room easily.

cheapest hotel with private toilets yet close to the city center, but in Iceland it's still very expansive...
Good breakfast. About 20 minutes walk to the city center (although a bus goes every 20 minutes). Small supermarket is nearby, as well as gas station and pharmacy. The staf was VERY friendly and really helpful! The cleanliness of the room could be better though...

I'll start this review by saying that my stay actually was for a weekend in June 2011, not September, but since tripadvisor won't allow me to fill that in...

Anyways, about the hotel:
Pros:
Good bathroom
Darkening curtains which were essential during summer months (sun up around the clock).
Tour buses pick you up from the front door.

Cons:
Unhelpful reception staff, answered any questions extremely reluctantly... (Q: Does internet work in the rooms? A: Yes Q: How do I get it A: Buy a timecard. Q: Ok, do you sell timecards? A: Yes. etc... when the first answer could just have been something like "Yes, but you have to buy a timecard, I sell them here for X€)
Bad location, a 20 minute rather boring walk from downtown.
Boring, onesided breakfast, especially considering the hotels price.
Pricey.
Small rooms made smaller by a third bed taking up space even though we'd ordered a room for two.
Had to pay separately for in room internet and it worked rather badly, kept disconnecting.

Next time I'll try another hotel closer to downtown Reykjavik.

Hotel Cabin is an excellent budget hotel in an expensive city. It is located about 25 minutes walk or a short bus ride from the centre of Reykjavik. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and can assist with booking a range of trips and activities. The breakfast buffet is good and the dinner buffet is useful after a day out if you don't have the energy left to go into town. Likewise the bar. The rooms are clean and comfortable but small, unless you pay the extra for the larger rooms. But still, Iceland is probably not a place you go to spend hours in your hotel room.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are small, but OK on a budget. You can pay extra to upgrade to a larger room.

Stayed here on our last night in Reykjavik as we wanted somewhere on the outskirts with ample parking as we were leaving the next day. It's quite far from central Reykjavik but this is obviously made clear when you book it.

Rooms are very basic and not particularly nice and while it is by no means expensive for Reykjavik, you will have a better stay somewhere else if you spend a little more money. Would not stay again I'm afraid.
