Excellent hotel!

Review of Hotel Cabin
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 2 Nov 2017via mobile
A lovely hotel with very friendly efficient staff. The rooms were basic and small but very clean and warm. The beds were extremely comfortable too. Staff were very helpful. Good location, approx 25 minutes walk to the centre of Reykjavik. The food at breakfast and in the salad bar was very good and extremely fresh. I would definitely stay here again, it's a perfectly adequate and comfortable base for anyone wanting a base from which to explore the sights of Reykjavik.

Our travel agent booked this for us. When we arrived and went to check in the main reception was quiet. We checked in and went to our room. When I say room, I actually mean our bedroom. The room was so small that I had to shimmy my way around the bed. The bathroom is the same.
The hotel is around 2.5km from town. It is close to the sea front and a good view of the mountains. The road is busy and gets very noises. Unfortunately for us the hotel was over run by Welsh students from different schools. The kids ran up and down the hallways screaming and chasing each other at any time of the day. Knocking on doors and running off while their teachers sat in the bar enjoying happy hour and playing cards. Breakfast was so noisy that we just had a quick coffee. The kids totally over run the dining area and the teacher stood up telling them about the days activities at the top of his voice. Nothing relaxing about breakfast. There is a lounge area at the hotel that we thought would be useful for us to sit because our room was so small, but again this is over run by kids. We brought a drink at the bar, but had to stand up drinking it because the seats were taken by kids.
The hotel is basic. No shampoos, shower gels or towels big enough for anything other than your hair. No hairdryers, no kettle etc. Just a bed and a bathroom. Our telly had 2 different stations. Only one was tuned in. The radiator kept us awake the first night and the children the second night. I believe it would be an idea to keep the children and couples to different areas of the hotel. I personally believe this hotel is more hostel than hotel.

Dear MeMyself123,

Thank you for your stay and your review.

We are sorry if your stay did not meet your standards. Our Standard rooms are small, but very comfortable. We do have the option of booking a Superior room (with or without a view) if you prefer larger rooms with more amenities.

We do have school groups coming to us and most of them are well behaved children with a presentable teacher. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused due to the noise from the school groups.

In our rooms we offer towels, soap and shampoo. It would have been no problem to ask the reception staff for few extra soaps or a towel. We would also like to mention that we have a hairdryer and a coffee & teapot in our Superior rooms. Please note that you can also borrow these items for a small deposit in the reception.

We agree with you, the view is indeed breathtaking. We recommend a visit to the Sólfar sculpture as you walk along the Bay, and then sit for a while and admire the incredible view.

We hope that the accommodation part did not detract from the overall enjoyment of your trip to Reykjavík.

Sincerely,
Hótel Cabin team

I checked in during early October and was greeted with 3 small beds, one of which were 2 singles shoved together to create a double. Baring in mind the space was tiny, their were three of us with huge suitcases and no space to hang any of our clothes. We had a lot of luggage containing heavy boots and wet clothing. The food was shocking, thank you to Mr Subway across the road, which saved us from starvation. The breakfast was terrible, hardly a great start to the day. There was an array of tasteless cheap food and stale bread. The staff were unfriendly and as for uniform all I could see was women running around in pink fluffy slippers. Back to the room. The mattress was like sleeping on Hay. Poor quality and I sunk like the titanic. I had to go down to reception to ask for more pillows as it was like sleeping on a bag. The bathroom was filthy. My friend complained about the lack of cleanliness. Shower gel had been poured everywhere, the shower wasn’t even sufficient size to fit one person in. And trust me, we’re not overweight. The sink made a terrible noise when the hot water tap was turned on. It sounded like world war 2 all over again. I could hear everything that happened in the surrounding rooms and trust us, it wasn’t pleasant. Most of the furniture was filthy or damaged and I had very little confidence in giving us a good meal. The evening meal was a buffet, a vegetable salad bar with hardly any nutrition or substance. Please, even if you are on a budget, don’t suffer the fate we endured.

We arrived a few days ago, got booked on this hotel because of a package trip. Therefore I don't know how much we payed, but it seems to be quite cheap.

Our guide who drove us to the hotel got us worried when he said that a lot of students stay here, and that they're sometimes pretty loud. We've seen them around a lot but they haven't bothered us at all even though they've been up late most nights.

The check in went well and fast, no inconveniences. We were given room 581, a "double room" or something of that style. We prepared ourselves for quite a small room but when we saw the actual size we realized that opening our bags would be a problem. My partner had space on his side of the bed to open it on but I was forced to squeeze it in between the wall and my side, so now I have to jump over it every morning. If you don't spend a lot of time on the room the size won't bother you. I'm guessing they want to squeeze in as many rooms as possible inside the building which would be understandable.

The bathroom is okay, clean and functional. The first time we entered we could sense a slight smell of mold, but it didn't bother us. There's also an annoying shelf that's placed really low over the sink which makes it hard to wash your face if you'd wish to.

The next morning we tried the breakfast for the first time, and that really wasn't a winner. Really basic, some sour yoghurt with only 1 type of tasteless cereal available, a few types of really dry and boring bread, 2 types of juice that tasted more like water with only a teeny bit of fruity taste to it, some marmalade and some other stuff for the toast. I guess it works, but tomorrow I doubt we'll be having breakfast here again.

When we entered our bathroom after breakfast it absolutely reeked of mold. There were even visible spots of mold in the corner near the shower. To be honest it still didn't bother us too much, but the room can't be left in such a state for other guests so we of course told the receptionist. She seemed to be very sorry and said they'd send someone up there to check. We were given the option to change rooms and said we might. When we came back before dinner the visible mold had been cleaned away and the smell wasn't as strong anymore, but nothing else was done, and we never got to change rooms. Hopefully they got the notice that something needs to be done before other guests stay in here.

Several times the lobby has been crowded with new guests checking in or old guests checking out or as mentioned before students conversing. Sometimes it can get pretty loud down there. If you're sensitive to noise you might have a hard time here. Any doors shutting next to your room makes the entire place shake.

But enough of that. If you're an average traveler with basic needs this place will be good for you. It's cheap, located fairly central, clean and has all the basic facilities.

Dear flugaaan,

Thank you for your review of your recent stay at Hótel Cabin.

Whilst we are glad to read that you liked our location, our pricing and the cleanliness of the hotel, we are truly sorry to hear about the mold situation you described. We appreciate that you let our receptionist know of this matter. We always aim to improve future guest stay and we thank you for your feedback.
We would like to emphasize that our standard rooms are indeed small, but fully equipped. We do have Superior rooms for those who want larger rooms.

We do hope that this would not impact on your decision to return to us in the future.
Hope you otherwise enjoyed your vacation in Iceland and we look forward welcoming you back soon.

Kind regards,
Hótel Cabin team

Was a bit concerned prior to visit due to some of the reviews on here, but I shouldn't have worried.

The Hotel Cabin is one of the bigger hotels in Reykjavik and is 1 block from the harbour front (great walk) and about 20 mins from the city centre. The rooms are either standard (inside or outside window to the back), superior (front window) or top floor (with harbour view). We booked a standard and was concerned that we might have one of the inside rooms, but in fact there are only about 20 of these in total and most of the standard rooms have external windows (hurrah). The rooms are small, but everything is clean and well kept - the bathroom had a great shower and the rooms are cleaned thoroughly daily. The rooms are also quiet - we were there in a week with vast groups of school children and didn't hear a peep in the room..

Breakfast is the usual buffet with cheese, egg and ham, but also porridge and loads of toast. Easily able to eat enough to be able to miss out lunch (it's all about saving food costs in Iceland!). The bonus of the Cabin is that there is also a relatively cheap buffet option for dinner - £26 for 2 which covered soup, salads and a hot meat option (usually meatballs or sausages). Not gourmet by any means, but great for a fallback when disinclined to spend yet another £50 on dinner out elsewhere (although I do recommend the hamburger place down the road into town if feeling flush..)

On a wider level, lovely and friendly staff, who competently and calmly dealt with my ever changing tour options. All very good all round .

The Hotel Cabin has a good location. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The complimentary breakfast was adequate. However the rooms are really small. There was barely room to turn around. There was no guide for contacting the front desk. The tv did not work, This hotel is an overnight stop for high school students on school trips. Many of the students were well behaved and quiet. Two groups were loud, rude, and had no adult supervision. The noise and banging of doors went on till way after midnight.
