“Clean and compact, but close enough to town, whilst being just out of town”
Reviewed 18 September 2010

We stayed at the Hotel Cabin on our first and last night of a weeks tour of Iceland.
On arrival we were met with friendly reception staff and directed to our deluxe double room.
The double room is two single beds pushed together, but from my experience of Iceland this is the norm. After staying in 5 different hotels, we did not see a double bed, they were all single pushed together.

The deluxe room was very clean and the bathroom had a bath, which as we discovered later on our tour of the country was a rarity. The room was compact to say the least, but it did the job! TV, Fridge and comfy bed, although we only had one pillow, which needed more filling.

We didn't eat at the hotel, apart from breakfast, which consisted of the normal stuff, tea, coffee and juice, cereal, toast, jams, cold meats and eggs and fruit.

There's a N1 service station across the road, which does excellent hot dogs and sandwichs and a 10 11 shop just up the road in which you can get supplies.

On our last night in Iceland we stayed at this hotel again and were upgraded to an executive room, the room was exactly the same as the deluxe room, but we had more window, were a floor higher up and therefore had a better view. You could lie on the bed and see out across the sea. The view was good.

All in all the hotel is clean, the staff very polite. Nothing to rave about, but nothing to complain about. I would recommend you try to retune the tv if you can only find Icelandic channels, I did and found BBC and ITV. I can also recommend the Argentina steak house in Reykjavik, it does the best steaks, they're very pricey but they are fantastic.

We pre-paid our 2-night stay and phoned the hotel on the date of arrival to let them know that we were arriving late since the flight landed 23:20, which they mentioned that it would be fine.
To our surprise, when we arrived at the hotel at around 1:30am they said that our room had been taken. Thee managed to place us on another hotel around 20 minutes drive from Reykjavik (just what you want at 2:00 in the morning and tired), which took them 30 minuted to get us in a taxi to be re-located (just what you want at that time of the night).
So, they've let us down badly and we were really tired the next day as it was 4:00 in the morning before we got to bed.
They didn't have the right to sell our room to another person as we paid in advance, so for this reason I'd never stay there again.

We really liked this hotel. We spent the extra money and got a deluxe room (as recommended by other reviewers) and we're glad we did; we had a room with a beautiful view of the water and mountains. The room was spacious and clean, and the bathroom was very modern and pretty big compared to European standards. The breakfast each day was decent, although by the end of our five-day stay we were pretty sick of the selection, as there wasn't much variety. The location of this hotel is great; easy 15 minute walk to downtown, and easy access to main roads and highways if you rent a car. Also, parking is free of charge.
Overall, we were very happy with our stay here, and would definitely stay here again when we return to Reykjavik.

I first stayed here in March 2009 and found it very good value for money, great breakfast and staff were very friendly. on this occasion, my friend and I got one of the deluxe rooms (even though we paid for standard, so we werent complaining) its also convinient because there is a buss to/from Keflavik airport.
the second time I stayed here was september 2009, this tim we got a much smaller room but we still coped ok, even though it was a bit of a squeeze.
the last time ~I stayed here, april this year the only complaint I had was a group of noisy school kids on my floor, and no matter how many times I complained nothing was done about them.

If you are looking for a cheap hotel, (If youre lucky, you get a sea view like I did once) with friendly staff, and not a million miles away from downtown (about a 20minute walk) then this is the hotel you are looking for.
Its the only place I would consider staying on my trips to Iceland now.

Hotel Cabin had been recommended to us by a friend who had stayed here a year earlier, so we came in with certain expectations- that we would be staying in a very basic but clean hotel.
It was definitely basic, as expected- the room was laughably small, but we did not mind, being used to European sized rooms. What we did mind was that the room didn't seem very clean. One of the coverlets on the bed had a foul smell, and the shower area as pretty dirty. The hotel was also very loud. We could hear a couple of our neighbors coming and going and their voices coming through the walls, making it difficult to sleep.
The breakfast was pretty decent.

We stayed at the Hotel Cabin for one night at the end of a really great journey round Iceland. We dropped off our hire car in Akureyri and took the short plane trip back to Reykjavik domestic airport then a taxi to the Hotel. Having checked up beforehand we were not expecting a lot and that was about right. We were fine in our wee room (a standard one I think) - quite like a cabin on the boat from Rosyth to Zeebrugge! In no way did this detract from our enjoyment of the whole holiday. We slept well enough considering we had a 5 am start for Keflavik and the plane home. The walk to the city centre was good - along the waterfront, lovely views - and walking about the city and back for the night probably helped us sleep. No breakfast was taken at the Cabin as a more leisurely breakfast at the airport seemed a better option for us. The many hotel guests were from all over and reception was busy on our arrival and departure. Reading other reviews, maybe we were fortunate.

A recommendation to a friend would be accompanied by an honest description and an invitation to make an informed choice! We paid for our Iceland trip as a package negotiated through Discover The World - they were brilliant.

The Cabin's a great "budget" choice for Reykjavik - everything's expensive enough in Iceland, but this hotel usually has lower than average prices and has nice (albeit small) rooms... small rooms seem to be the norm in Iceland though. If you're two people it's a little cramp, but if you're just staying a night or two it shouldn't bother you too much. The mattress was comfortable.

The rooms are nice and quiet - even though you're on a busy enough street, you don't hear the traffic. The curtains are a little light, so if you're going during summer and light bothers you when you sleep, you should bring a sleep mask.

Location is nice - you're a 15-20min walk to the downtown, but there's pretty frequent bus service right in front of the hotel if you'd rather not walk.

There's a buffet restaurant downstairs - it's overpriced from what I remember, but the food's decent. Wireless internet costs money too.

The staff were friendly and helpful.

Note that if you leave your bag in "storage" it's just a big room downstairs with no staff and no locks, so you might want to lock your valuables up just to be safe. I had no problems, but I know the first time I went it surprised me a little that it was so open.
