We stayed in the apartments of the Odinsve Hotel a couple of blocks away from the hotel itself just around the corner from the main shopping street. They dont look much from the outside but are done to a very high spec inside. We had a large 2 bedroomed apartment with a large corner lounge with views out onto the Hallgrimskirche up the top of the street.
Positives, large well furnished, comfortable couch, beds and spacious bathroom with all you could need to cook and be independent including washing machine in bathroom, cable tv, phone (free local calls).. Nice views up the street to the cathedral and out the side window over to the mountains (4 apartments, we were on top so maybe the lower ones have a less good view).
Negatives, and this the only reason I didnt give an excellent, one of the bedrooms faced the street on which the Koffiebarinn restaurant/bar is. On the weekend this is one of THE places to be in Reykjavik, and thus the party goes on thru the night, and its loud. I think the first night we fell asleep around 3am and the party was still going. The second night we swapped bedrooms (face different streets) and slept fine and the kids were able to sleep thru the noise in the other bedroom. Of the other three apartments one is same set up directly below thus you can avoid the noise but I think the other apartments only face the 'noisy' street so theres no escape. That said if you are staying there during the week ie not Fri or Sat night it should be a good bit quieter as Fri/Sat are the main party nights and midweek is much quieter. Other small negative is that you are on the 1st or 2nd floor and thus have 2 or 4 flights of narrow stairs to get your suitcases up, we travel light and are young so no probs but if you like big suitcases and are a little less nimble it will be a struggle as theres no lift. Finally theres no free parking outside, nearest free spot is up by the cathedral which is a good uphill 5 minute walk away. Location other than maybe the noise issue is great just off the main shopping street Laugavegur and within a few minutes walk of shops restaurants etc (the main hotel is only another couple of blocks away) and the street that the apartments is on also has plenty of shops and cafes, including a supermarket just up the road.
Hotel itself looked nice, we only saw it when we checked in and we didnt eat there so cant give advice on it. Staff were friendly and helpful and can organise tours/pick ups if necessary. They did give great advice to try Laundromat restaurant/bar/cafe as a FANTASTIC spot downtown for familys, great food, good prices and very kid friendly. Dont be put off if you have no kids, the basement is the play area so upstairs is almost kid free!
Overall other than the noise issue I cant knock these apartments they were by far the most comfortable, spacious, modern, well situated and best value for money spot we stayed in during Icelandic holiday.
