On our way back to Boston from London, we decided to check out Reykjavik and stay in this recommended hotel. We got in really late and took the bus which dropped us off right at the front of the hotel. The front desk agent, Eir, was super helpful, cheerful and accommodating considering we arrived at 1:00am. We had bought a few Viking beers and needed a bottle opener and she helped us right away and she even offered to come up to our room and help us with our television when we had trouble with it (we figured it out, it was fine). The rooms are small, but cozy; which is to be expected for any traditional european hotel. The location, while being very central downtown, is far enough off the party path so that you can get some sleep if you're there on a weekend. Overall, we had a great experience when we stayed there for the night and would definitely recommend it to anyone spending an overnight in Reykjavik.

We stayed here for four nights with our infant son. Our room was small, but big enough that it fit his travel cot. The location was good as we could easily walk around Reykjavik and we did have a nice view of the harbor. However, there are some miss-steps. The bathroom is very tiny and the shower is very small, you will likely hit an elbow at least once. (we aren't large people either) There was only one towel rack for all the towels and the vanity is miniscule. The tv is very dated and quite poor in picture and sound. The rug in our room had what looked like burn marks and did not seem clean at all. Our room was also a bit noisy as we had the restaurant/bar below us even though we were on the third floor. Many of the furnishing were just a bit worn out. Also, there is no hotel parking, you have to try and find some around the hotel and it is pay parking during the day in many of the spots.

On the plus side, the free wifi did work very well. Also, the front desk staff was very friendly and very helpful. They could provide us with a converter when ours wasn't working for our electronics to borrow at no charge, give us help navigating the city and sites in the area and quickly got us an extra set of towels for the baby. They greeted us with smiles and were absolutely delightful to speak with. I wish more hotels had front desk staff this polite and helpful.

If this hotel was half the price and the rooms looked just a little bit like the ones on the hotel website it would probably get a higher rating from me.

Tip: Our European converters didn't fit by just a bit, if you speak to the front desk they can help you out.

We stayed here for two nights in late July at the beginning of our trip and one night at the end of the trip. The rooms were nice enough but very small. The location was good. We paid about 300 Euros a night if not more and they charged extra for breakfast! Sorry but this is a total rip off since you weren't exactly getting a made to order breakfast or a lavish buffet or even a cappuchino. It was a perfectly acceptable breakfast but to charge $20 for breakfast on top of the 300 euros is ridiculous. I guess I should have read the fine print in the booking.com description. I just expect more for spending that kind of money. Two other complaints:
1) We accidentally forgot to return a room key for a guesthouse that we stayed at earlier in the trip. We couldn't get to the post office so we asked the person at the hotel desk to please drop it in the mail for us. They charged us for this-I guess I shouldn't be surprised given everything else they charged us for but we weren't staying at a budget hotel. A small request like this at a 300 Euro hotel should be done at no charge (they charged us $8 BTW it wasn't a large package)
2) I just looked at my VISA charges online and they charged me an extra $1276 for what I do not know. I could figure out the other charges from our two stays but this charge looks to be a combination of all the other charges. I now have to dispute this with VISA.

My recommendation: Unless you are made of money or don't mind getting ripped off don't stay here.

Hotel Odinsve - Reykjavik, Iceland

Based on recommendations from Trip Advisor, I chose this hotel (pre-paid) for several nights in Reykjavik. The experience was very poor, disappointing to say the least, and vastly over-priced. We first stayed in room 308 for several nights. The carpet was dirty, one small towel rack in the bathroom so we could not hang towels, broken light fixture, floor in terrible condition. The shabbiness of the room made us wonder what else was wrong. Outside in the hall, we had to navigate around old furniture, blocking a balcony. An ancient barely working blurry TV in the room. For this we were charged five star prices for a two star hotel.. Breakfast was extra for a high price. . When we arrived after an over-night flight, we were told the room was ready for use around noon, but since check-in was officially 2PM we had to pay a sur-charge to check in at noon even though the room was ready. During decades of considerable travel we had never encountered this. After several days in Akureyri we returned for one night to the hotel and had room 404. Much better, although the price was still high compared to what one should expect for this price. When we prepared to sleep we noticed there were no sheets on the bed, only a mattress cover. The staff was very helpful, making the best of a bad situation, and they are to be singled out for the one positive statement we can make about our stay in this hotel. Do not recommend. July 2014 Howard & Marie.

Returning to my room after a long day sightseeing I was surprised to find that the room had not been cleaned . No replenishment of the necessities in the room or bathroom , bins not emptied or bet made . We got the towels replaced but that was it . Not great experience from that point of view , mostly service with a scowl rather than a smile .

We, two mature couples, stayed for 2 nights in one of the apartments managed by the hotel. The apartments are about 200 metres from the hotel and even better located than the hotel itself.
The apartment is modern and well furnished. The kitchen was perfect for our needs - not more than breakfasts.
The apartments are right on one of the main shopping streets in the centre of Reykjavik. Amusingly the next building up the street is the Reykjavik prison, and the top floor apartments have a great view into the prison yard. I believe there were not more than 2 inmates in this tiny relic of a prison while we were there.
There is restricted paid parking in the area between 10:00 and 18:00, but outside those hours there is no problem.

A little boutique hotel perched on the side of the hill. Walking distance to everything.
Tiny rooms but well appointed with TV and tea and coffee making facilities. A well stocked mini bar.
Helpful and friendly reception staff.
Great restaurant in the hotel. Yummy and generous breakfast in restaurant.
Happy to return.
